What was prime tf2? I started playing in 2014 and I feel like I missed out on a ton, did I?
>>
>>719407245
Yes, but late 2014 through early 2016 was also the healthiest state TF2 was ever in.
>>
didn't we just have a thread about this
Anyway, 2011-2014ish was peak TF2. With another kino time being pre-pre-nerf sandman, the one that would full-stun you from any range
that shit was chaotic fun

War! is definitely in the heart of the golden age. Sniper vs Spy - Mannconomy was probably the golden age, Mannconomy - Scream Fortress 6 (excluding that garbage fan art robot boogaloo update) was the silver age and everything since the Experation Date update has been the Bronze Age.

Started playing when that update dropped. I think the peak was the build up to the engineer update. He was the only one without weapons at that point, plus the whole golden wrench event. Mannconomy was a game changer too. Halloween 2010 was probably the most fun one out of them all. Great memories all around.
>>

of course an f2p retard would use "kino" as an adjective

I almost feel bad for people still playing this. The artstyle is borderline dead, community servers are dead, valve sucked all of the fun out of it over its lifetime and casual is awful. It's as if majority of the modern tf2 fan base are zoomers that don't even know just how fucking awful modern tf2 is.
>>
>>719407245
I think the patch where they removed the heavy's ability to eat his own dropped sandwich was the start of the decline, personally.
>>
>>719407245
In terms of new updates actually being good, they peaked around 2009 or so, and the last time they were truly good was in 2011. But the game is still so damn good that I can't say that you really "missed out" on much per se.
I mean, you did get in early enough to feel like you were part of the masses waiting for the comics to conclude, at least.

Only the Pyro and Medic updates were good.
The Heavy update was 'whatever' and changed nothing except making bad Heavy players even more useless.
The Scout update and beyond actively made the game worse.
By late 2010-early 2011 the game was basically unplayable.

Never. I played Team Fortress 2 when it first released for about 1 day, then immediately went back to Team Fortress Classic. No grenades, slow gameplay, ugly artstyle, and worse gun mechanics than a port of a Quake mod that came out 9 years earlier?

Late 2008-early 2010 was the best years.
At that point, it resolved the biggest class balance issues/early growing pains and had small but hugely impactful + flavorful updates.
First Halloween, Sniper vs Spy, War! update.
Everything still felt fresh and fun.
>>
>>719414079
Slow shooters are better.
>>
>>719414561
TF2 is part of the TF series and the previous game's gameplay were fast. Valve fucked up hard.
>>
>>719414393
Talking about tf2 have a golden age feels weird given how both the best and worst changes to engineer. The adding of moveable buildings and the adding of mini sentries, happened in the exact same update. But yeah but if I had to pick the period of time I felt most optimistic about the game Late 2008-early 2010 is probably about right.

the removed team scrambling by vote option now makes sure that every single casual game you play is either boring as shit or you get stomped to smithereens. They sucked the fun out of the game with that.
>>
>>719414561
In which case TF2 is damned by being fairly fast paced compared to its competition anyway.
>>
>>719414883
TF2 is not "fairly fast paced". It's slow as molasses. And please don't upload one of those ridiculous videos of some retard jumping around while playing the scout class. No-one plays like that in real life.
>>
anything pre matchmaking was prime tf2
>>
>>719415386
Every hero in overwatch's base speed is slower than the heavy. By the standard of modern shooters, yes tf2 is fast paced. And I dunno what you're trying to say about the scout, if you think a video exists then that means someone is playing that way "in real life". You certainly get people playing as scout at a competitive level in pubgames to pubstomp.
>>
>>719414561
the slowness is key for actual teamwork happening and the game not being over as soon as one team has an advantage.
>>
>>719407245
When the game first launched it was super fun but then they started adding cosmetics and the fan base drifted more towards the furry pedophile MLP faggots that populate the shit today.
One of the weirdest transitions of any community I've ever seen.

It's why people preferred Valve Servers to Meet Your Match.
>not locked in by hostage exp points
>can drop in and drop out whenever you please, no worry of your team getting fucked by matchmaking because it's the last two minutes of a round
>can vote for whatever map you want, even replaying the same map again and again
>can see server populations before joining
>if a match is too stacked, the losing team and empathetic players from the winning team will vote to scramble
Unironically better.

2012 MERASMUS! UPDATE was the last actual good update. It featured merasmus, ghostfort, and a bunch of other actually interesting cosmetic stuff that isn't just hats like zombie skins, spells, voice changers, footprints, custom particle effects for weapons etc. The community basically peaked around this time. The next year's helltower update was underwhelming in comparison (skeleton king was nowhere near as epic as merasmus boss fight and spell power ups were gimmicky at best.) but still had soul. The 2014 halloween carnival map with bumper cars was clearly half assed garbage and that's when they officially killed haunted halloween gifts. This is around the time they completely gave up on the game and just went full jew mode.

So yes. 2012 was the peak TF2 overall culturally which was important considering all the cool community servers were still alive unlike today.
>>
>>719419798
Correct. Unless you're just jumping from lower to higher points, the XXXTreme shit you see with rollouts are useless 85% of the time.
>>
>>719407245

>>
>>719419250
CoD like most modern shooters severely restricts how fast paced the game is by using ironsights to force you to slow down every time you want to shoot with any reliable accuracy. Basically the only shooters these days that don't do that are hero shooters who then use base movespeeds closer to overwatch than tf2.

>>719421939

TF2 doesn't have console sprint like Call of Duty does, a feature specifically designed to slow down combat so that the gameplay is better for aiming with a controller.
>>
>>719423251
Yet MODERN CoDs allow for faster speeds moving around AND if you are playing on PC requires better aim than TF2. If we're gonna use "muh consoles" then it is fair to say TF2 IS slower than modern CoDs because I do remember playing it on the PS3 and noticing how slow it was back then.
>>
MyM completely fucked the game beyond repair.
>Score is 2-2 in CTF instantly because two scouts rushed the intel while every else was loading in
>Load into Attack/Defense on defense as the final point is being captured because 3/4 of the team ragequit after getting wiped in a push
>Stupid long respawn times in a game with a minuscule TTK
>Might as well requeue the second a round ends because the server empties
>Constantly get put in games that are already over
>Haven't seen a map vote that wasn't the exact same map we just played since the first 4 months of MyM
But realistically I knew the game was intensive care when Gun Mettle released. The game can be split into post and pre Gun Mettle which was a binary "good/shit" switch.
>>
>>719424243
Did they actually increase respawn times after MYM? Respawn times in general are fucking AIDS.
>>
>>719424445

>>
>>719424750
in reality most matches did not have a wtfhax sniper. but every match did have at least one guy who wanted to be.
widow is a whole extra level of bullshit when overwatchs flaws are looked at together.
>>
>>719424750
I feel like sniperfags have gotten much, much, MUCH worse since people started vocally bitching about sniper, like causing that much butthurt and seethe awoke an extra burst of cancer they didn't know they had.
>>
>>719423665
Yes, modern CODs allow you to sprint very fast, but are you able to shoot while doing so? No, in fact there are specific gameplay mechanics that de-incentivize you from running around, such as an accuracy penalty while moving. This is a hallmark of an FPS designed for consoles primarily, as opposed to FPS that are designed for PC primarily and then later ported to console. It's not even a "muh consoles" thing, these slower gameplay mechanics existed in earlier tactical PC FPS games before they became synonymous with consoles, but broad strokes paint the fences faster.

Bottom line, movement speed is not what decides whether a game is slow or not, it's more complicated than that. It's not even about the platform you're playing it on. It's about whether or not you're de-incentivized from playing a fast pace by the mechanics.

>>719425635
At least be honest, it's not bitching about Sniper, it's the advocation for the removal of the class as a whole that gets the obviously well-deserved righteous anger flowing. It should piss everyone off that loves this game and wants to preserve its vision.
>>
>>719407245
Anytime before the F2P update
>>
>>719426374
You know you don't have to ADS and you can still be a speed demon, right? And what is the benefit going fast as Soldier or Demo? Demo I can see for getting across the map fast to try and flank as the Sticky Jumper .

Subjectively, 2014.
Objectively, before mid-2016. The only reason why Meet your Match isn't widely recognized as quite possibly the worst update a video game ever had is because Valve gets a pass for every shitty thing they do and TF2fags are mostly delusional.
Pretty much every single problem modern TF2 faces can be traced back to that one update.

>>
>>719427483
Propelling yourself forward and upward is what allows you to get the first shot in on another player and take an advantage over an equally skilled player. Not all TF2 classes have such advanced mobility options built-in - Heavy and, to a lesser extent, Pyro and Demo, are all about maxing out careful positioning and winning battles straight up through consistent damage. Soldier has to do something to tip the scales in his favor instead of just waddling around at the 2nd lowest movement speed in the game with harsh damage falloff, that's where rocket jumping comes in.
>>
Gun Mettle was the point of no return, when Valve started nerfing weapons en-masse and shamelessly backporting CSGO monetization features.

I've played since 2012 and when I log in today it's still the same game as when I played back then just more cosmetics and war paints.
The only real difference is the playerbase which got more mentally ill(furries, fags, nazis, russians (not really mentally ill just annoying since I can't understand the chat half the time).. and more women - on community servers at least..)

They should revert the ambi, sandman and caber nerfs but otherwise it's still the most fun game on the market
>>
>>719426374
>Yes, modern CODs allow you to sprint very fast, but are you able to shoot while doing so? No
for all intents and purposes: yes, you can. it's all about the tacticool crouch-sliding stuff now (which sometimes does let you shoot depending on game) and the actual act of ADSing is so fast in modern call of duty and its clones that combined with the TTK, all it really means is you right click then left click to kill someone instead of just left clicking. ADS is no longer any sort of tactical gameplay element or anything or even a means of differentiating weapons like in the originals, it's just "a thing that has to be there because it would be weird if it wasn't" so they make it as quick and pointless as possible
