What is an RPG?
>>
>>719407296
Not a social game for immersion. Its for failed math nerds to get their hooked on phonics for number crunching
>>
>>719407667
if there's numbers over enemies heads then its an RPG
>>
>>719407667
Realistically speaking, how would an rpg without numbers look like?

Apparently every single video game ever made is an "role playing game" because you play the role of the main character. At last that's the retarded excuse some people use when trying to justify why games like The Witcher, Kingdom Come Deliverance and literally any JRPGs somehow classify as a RPG when you play as predetermined characters with established backstories, personalities and designs.

Branching Dialogue
Branching Story
Talents and Gear Progression

A game must tick all 3 to be a legit RPG. If it doesn't it's a "-genre- with RPG elements."

A role playing game is when the success/failure of a given task is determined by the character's "role" in the game, rather than the player's mechanical skill. For example, three hypothetical games where the player can pick a lock
In an adventure game, the player uses the lockpick item to open the door, functionally no different than using the key
In an action game, the player must complete a lockpicking minigame to test their skill in the lockpick mechanics
In an RPG, the character will have a lockpicking skill stat and they can only open the door if their skill stat is stronger than the lock stat.

the original and best meaning is that RPG meant when you tried to create the tabletop experience in a video game
>>
>>719407296
A numbers-based combat simulation where each player controls a customized character who gains experience points as they take actions within a narrative and progressively becomes more powerful within their role as part of a co-operative group with other players

>heh, actually rpg have nothing to do with stats
>see rpg

A miserable pile of levels
>>
>>719408724
That's the old definition, I don't think it's adequate today.
>>
>>719409597
3.5 really is garbage
>>
>>719407296
RPG is a list of mechanics and if you have a certain amount of them you count as one.
>>
>>719407296
everything that says its an RPG
>>
>>719407923
JRPGs are RPGs because the genre is derivative of Wizardry which was an early emulation of tabletop RPG gaming.
>>
>>719407296
It has Levels and HPs.
That's it. It's an RPG.

Is that Matt Walsh?

Games that focus on resource management and character building. Battle is not so much based on skillful execution, but a test of your remaining resources and how well you built your characters.
The subgenre of WRPGs evolved to focus on freedom in exploring the game world, in how to handle the tasks given to you, and which stories/quests the player takes on.
The subgenre of JRPGs evolved to focus on the numbers side of tabletop gaming often with predetermined stories and characters.

Hoo boy, that's a tough one... well, let me start with this: an RPG—short for role-playing game—is basically any game where you, the player, take on the role of a character (shocking, I know). But, let’s be real, defining an RPG is like trying to define what constitutes a “good meal” at a buffet. There are so many kinds, and honestly, trying to pin down what makes an RPG an RPG just feels like you're trying to put a dragon in a cage made of spaghetti noodles. It just doesn’t work.

At its core, RPGs have a few things in common: character development, a plot, and decision-making that impacts the game world. But here’s the catch—that’s it. Everything else is up for grabs, and every RPG seems to slap on its own spin to the formula. You’ve got JRPGs (Japanese RPGs, if you’re uncultured) that are all about turn-based combat and sobbing over anime characters’ emotional crises. Then you've got WRPGs (Western RPGs, for the uninitiated) that let you wander through massive open worlds while you pretend to be a morally ambiguous hero... or just kill everyone for fun. Oh, and let's not forget ARPGs (Action RPGs), where you basically mash buttons and hope your character gets stronger than your crippling existential dread.

But then, you’ve got stuff like tactical RPGs, which are just glorified chess with extra steps, or MMORPGs, where you join thousands of other nerds online to ruin your social life and debate the superiority of certain factions. And don't even get me started on roguelikes—they’re RPGs in a sense, but only if you accept the fact that they’re just games about dying a lot. A lot.

So yeah, RPGs are like a buffet of genres—each one slightly different but ultimately just the same. Defining them? Well, that's like asking what’s the one true way to play Dungeons & Dragons. Good luck with that.
