There's worse things than being the invincible guy who saves everyone but deals almost no damage. That role is also widely needed in every party so you're in high demand.Healers in XI did more than just heal. They could also buff and do really useful things like teleport the entire party here and there or make everyone undetectable.

Being able to cast Sleep every turn with the starting lute is often integral to surviving the earlygame. Not to mention, they usually develop Mage magic, giving them offensive and utility options they might not have instruments to replicate.
