>wizards in tabletop are cool because they have a spell for every situation and you can get creative and weird with problem solving
>wizards in vidya get a few CCs and a dozen variations of fireball

Are there any games that do Wizards justice?
>>
>>719428982
Not really. Vidya doesn't do player imagination well.
>>
>>719428982
Dragon's Dogma is probably the best game for making spellcasters feel like they're wielding godlike power. As for having an insane variety of spells Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous has a massive spell list.
>>
What do you mean?
Like you want a vidya where you can turn the boss into a frog? Then tp them 10 into the air? Slow down time and change the matter of the enemy soldiers into rubber? That kinda crazy op shit?

Or what.

I'm pretty sure in ff you can turn enemies into frogs. In fe most spells are offensive but they have more than just fire spells and only healers can use shit like warp. In ER you can blink, turn transparent(stealth), with a bunch of different types of offensive magic and spells that aren't just fire ball.
>>
>>719429372
Forgot dragons dogma. Mages have a lot of cool shit.
>>
>>719428982
Not only that but you have to specialize in fireball, you can't have fireball in your arsenal of a myriad of other useful spells, you have to make your fireball strongest at the detriment to other spells.
>>
>>719429189
Dragon's Dogma spellcasters are literally what OP is talking about. Several "awesome button" aoe spells and almost zero interesting utility.
>>
Imagine a game where you're a wizard but you gotta type your spells like a programming language.
>>
Baldur's Gate 2 is still the best wizard fantasy on the market.

This is literally what bg3 is but nitwit pretend grognard types avoid it because they're all poseurs. Game has like 600 abilities and they all have a genuine use case.
>>
>>719431672
The magic system in morrowind is just a roundabout way of opening up the cheat console and adjusting modifiers, it's a bad game
>>
>>719431794
..yes, the magic system is like having power over reality where you can do anything, like a wizard would do, hence why I said it in response to an op complaining about video game wizards just shooting fireballs
>>
>>719431717
>play wizard Tav in BG3
>feel like a side character because Gale is literally you but cooler and better at everything

Magic shouldn't be in the hands of the player, it should be relegated to enemies only, the player should at most benefit indirectly from magic itens and companions with limited magic abilities.
>>
>>719432006
Same as BG2. Edwin will always mog your PC, but he was a sissy bitch so it was some consolation.
>>
>>719432006
except at not getting magical AIDS
>>
>>719432006
That's why you play a sorcerer Durge and shit talk him, or better yet, gnaw his hand off and never encounter him again.
Seriously, the game provides you with a billion of bonus spell tools, there's barely any downside for being a sorcerer but you get metamagic and broken sorc passives alongside the best ways to abuse acuity.
>>
>>719432349
Yeah but sorcerers are gay.
>>
>>719428982
bg3
>magic disguises have reactivity
>elements you toss around interact with each other
>portals
>knock can make you act as the party rogue
>lock can force enemy movement a certain way during fights
>smoke spells can obscure vision to help with sneaking or theft
>can transform body into gas and go through pipes/small spaces for position or exploration
>summon familiars/ mage hand to manipulate distant objects
>read minds to make dialogue easier
other rpgs just tend to make it a glass canon combatant with little outside of that

in act 2, in Balthazar's room there is a secret where you can create a unique shadow lamp that lets you to summon a shadow when equipped in order to create it you need to bring Gale with you. Anytime I play wizard character I bring him with me and chose the option to do it myself to see him seethe on how I'm doing what's essentially his job but better. After that its to the camp for rest of the game for him.
>>
>>719432808
>summon familiars/ mage hand to manipulate distant objects
On the subject of mage hand, people don't realize how broken the BG3 mage hand is
>it can drink elixirs which includes giant strength ones, enabling mage hand to throw and shove mid sized opponents, basically functioning as a cantrip telekinesis
>it can throw potions you drop which doesn't spend any of your actions, arguably the best buffer for your party after the life cleric
>can fly so it can reach several hard to obtain chests easily
>you can use aid on it to make it tankier
>>
>>719432912
Or you can play a shadow sorcerer who just gets a dog that can lock down the entire combat for free.

Rift Wizard and its sequel
>>
>>719433275

>>
>>719432126
The correct way to play BG trilogy as a caster is by being a dragon disciple. Makes you feel like a special snowflake too, provides strong bonuses and you can pick the strongest spells typically before the wizard can even find scrolls. Bonus points for being tanky as fuck in melee, it's very useful for MC since there's a lot of fights that begin after dialogues.
>>
Sorcerers forever coping because no ammount of magic they get from daddy will ever make them this cool
>>
>>719428982
CC is cool, turning powerful bosses helpless with a single spell never stops being satisfying.
>>
>>719433275
You're playing BG3.
>>
>>719432006
This is how I felt rocking my Cleric of Selune getting the back-to-back-to-back Selune's daughter, Selune's daughter's fucktoy and then Shadowheart being Selune's chosen. Brutal blackpill.
>>
>>719432006
>>719434648
I feel like BG3 really really wants you to play as either a paladin or a bard
>>
>>719429818
this is true but because it uses the videogame limitations of wizards expertly.

What OP is talking about is impossible in a videogame, since videogames are inherently limiting on imagination and on possibilities of solving problems. You only get to use what the developers gave you, in the way and context that they designed it. That is the complete opposite of how tabletop works.
>>
>>719434763
You're meant to play Durge and be on par with the Origin characters in terms of being tied to the story because originally all Tavs were Durge but they pussied out.
>>
>>719434095
warlocks are cooler than both. also more powerful depending on the patron.
>>
>>719434095
Like 99% of Wizards will never catch up to a Sorc, you just accept your character gets to be a high end Wizard (even in tabletop) because they're a player character. Realistically every Wizard should have a set level, because it should take years of study for them to level up and learn / understand new spells. Sorchads just snap their fingers and go through decades worth of study at once and they get stronger by simply doing stuff (and also they FUCK thanks to their naturally high charisma).

>>719432086
shut up. i bet you tried to summon something to sit on and the chair appeared in your ass and now you dont want anyone else to have magic.

Vidya sucks for all types of playstyles. Frankly once you start playing TTRPGs with a good group, vidya becomes boring. My group regularly play The One Ring and it is amazing.

durge clerics/paladins make no sense

Yeah I know, but it's not like they could remove the Paladin class from the game. Cleric? There are evil as fuck Clerics so it wouldn't be a problem, even a merciful god like Ilmater would probably take on Durge.

The problem with vidya wizards is -because- they have a dozen variations of fireball and a few CC
90% of the wizards repertoire ought to be crowd control and problem solving spells, not making them a replacement for fighters or making them just as capable in combat as fighters.
Fighters should dominate in combat the same way that wizards dominate in crowd control.
If wizards are casting sleep then martials should be playing Dynasty Warriors. If wizards are casting fireballs and lightning storms, martials should be Super Saiyans.
>>
>>719429608
>>719431702
You two should play Noita
>>
>>719435751
Durge literally lost all his memories. It's up to you how to shape his story.
>>
>>719436208
They wouldn't, it's an issue with playing a Cleirc in general though it's kind of like being ordained into something. It's the same in BG1, like your barely an adult character is somehow a priest in this religion (IIRC you don't pick your god in BG1) or in Neverwinter Nights 2 where you're a village boy / girl but also, again, an ordained priest of a religion despite having no contact with it. It's fine for Tav because he's a completely blank state. I know that the murder tribunal mentions, if you're a Paladin, you went to them crying of broken oaths so I assume Durge was living a full life as a Cleirc/Paladin before finding out they were a Bhaalspawn and then leaning into that aspect of their life. It'd have to be a situation where Tav didn't know at all, at any point, what they were and only learned (for the first time) during the events of the game for it to make any sense.
>>
>>719436632
Wizards are supposed to be rare as fuck. One wizard is as valuable as an entire squad, if not an army. Want to be a super saiyan? Become a gish.
>>
>>719436698
alright but you're still a murderous necrophile as per your backstory, either he took the oath and somehow gained the armor and power out of the pod or it just doesn't make sense
>>
>>719436632
anime is quite often very stupid.
>>
>>719429608
Already exists, though not as a game. The isekai light novel (English title) 'The Diary of a Middle-Aged Sage's Carefree Life in Another World' has the spells written like a computing language. These are stored in a format (your typical scrolls and books, or stuff like magic storage stones and such), and while you can just learn the spell by 'storing' ('installing') the spell into your mental consciousness (which has limited storage), you still had to visualise what the spell actually does for it to be effective. Because of that, to maximise the amount of spells you can store in your 'mental storage', one would have to condense the 'magic language' used as much as possible by making them parallel layered, thus '3D' in shape as opposed to '2D'.

>Are there any games that do Wizards justice?
How could they? It's basically like typing sv_cheats as soon as you start the game.
>okay so we got the buff guy with a club
>the fast jew with a dagger
>oh and an old man who can warp reality and control time
>>
>>719437078
I'm only referencing anime because westerns are retards who love making fighters redundant whenever wizards are empowered.

Dominions, a wizard would rarely be on the battlefield, he's more valuable doing months long rituals to curse the enemy's crops or summon an eclipse to hide his army movements.
>>
>>719428982
>wizards in vidya get a few CCs and a dozen variations of fireball
Good. The silverbullet "can-do-everything" "Lemme just solve this with a spell"-wizards of dnd are fucking cancer and antithetical to any interesting scenarios, literally just there to serve powergaming nerds
>>
>>719436717
Level 1 cleric works as an apprentice priest. But justfiying it in BG1 is much easier, especially if you pretend to be a cleric of Oghma. For a farmboy in NWN2 only Lathander and to a lesser degree Chauntea work well.
>>
>>719436698
>>719436871
They actually give paladin durge something of a more concrete backstory
>You're actually said to have been trying to build up some kind of life for yourself before you "woke up" to your heritage and the compulsions took over
>Narration says your magic feels hollow and a parody
>Sarevok comments on you wiping out your fellow order members in the past
>Oathbreaker knight says he's helped you try and atone multiple times already in the past
Durge's mind was coming apart at the seams between the oath's influence on his soul and his bhaalspawn origin, so the complete shattering they play up in the game compliments it well
