I want to play a game that gives you very little instructions. Instead, it just drops you in the game world and lets you figure everything out on your own. I've already played Outer Wilds, is there anything else similar?

>>719439641

I can't tell if Cultist Simulator is a bad idea with good execution or a bad idea with good execution. The invisible RNG and capped odds of success, the card draws that might as well be a slot machine for hour much control you have over them, the amount of grinding required, and the absolute disrespect for you time make it a painful slog to get through. The writing and world are interesting, but there's no reason to play it without abusing the developer console unless you want to assemble a list of things not to do when designing a game.

And then the guy went on and made a TTRPG, The Lady Afterwards, and it ended up essentially being a multiplayer choose your own adventure book instead of an actual adventure module. It's like the guy desperately wants to write a book but is instead using literally any other form of media.

Who the fuck are the mentally ill zombies in these threads and communities that the game actually appeals to? It's not a puzzle game so stop posting it in these communities. It's a game made for roguelite fags and gambling addicts. No self-respecting puzzle fan wants that shit

>>719454971
Blue Prince gets a lot of attention purely because it was the darling of all the journos so it got a lot of promotion at the start so a lot of people got FOMOd into playing it. This is true, but let me correct your next sentence:
>Normally puzzle games only attract the right sort of autist, but this bypassed that filter and got a bunch of regular people playing it, forcing them into using their brains for the first time in years.
>They're still seething about it to this day.

I was one of the haters too, but I eventually broke down and bought it because I am in constant withdrawal for Myst/Riven like games. Nowhere near as bad I expected, but the RNG can definitely be a dick. I read somewhere that the game purposefully makes the first 14 in-game days harder on purpose for some reason. Anyway it definitely satiated my Mystlike hunger for the time being.

What I didn't like:
- Again, the RNG can be a dick at times.
- There's no cutscene for the end of the third act
- THEM LOCKING THE BLUE TENTS MEMOS BEHIND A PREREQUISITE OF EIGHT FUCKING TROPHIES IN ADDITION TO COSTING 400 GODDAMN COINS. BY THE TIME YOU CAN FINALLY GET IT, MOST OF THE CLUES IT PROVIDES FOR ACT 2 YOU'VE ALREADY INADVERTENTLY FIGURED OUT THROUGH CHANCE, GUESSING OR BRUTE FORCE (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, GODDAMN REALM SIGILS). THAT'S JUST BAD GAME DESIGN AND RUINS THE FLOW OF THE GAME, CUT THE PRICE BY HALF AND THE TROPHY REQUIREMENT TO 2 OR 3 FOR FUCK'S SAKE REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

8.75 out of 10, I enjoyed my stay.

I put 20 hours into the game while cheating my ass off to reduce the pointless RNG, and I cannot imagine what it'd be like to put 500 hours into this turd and realise that all of the puzzles at the end are fake and go nowhere. You weren't annoyed by the arrows, the encoded tile patterns, the boiler room and pool, or 50 other clues that went absolutely nowhere because the game was unfinished? You were satisfied by the blue atelier?

The game is a 4/10 before the sigils, 7/10 when there's still puzzles to solve, and then a 2/10 when you realise most of them go absolutely nowhere.

RNG is antithetical to puzzle game design. Puzzle fans play puzzle games because they want to feel like their intelligence controls the flow of the game and their progress. Once you gate that behind arbitrary number generation you have created something that is the opposite of a puzzle game

Thought I had saved a suggestion list, but you can always try to google some of the stuff written on this shill pic.

Very conceptual

>STRAY
I've seen British secret agent have less dangerous adventures than this cat

>Subnautica
Just play without food simulation it get tedious, also set yourself an objective to collect one of every fish

>The Talos principle
More of a series of enigma games, but with deep themes

Very short:
>INSIDE
Just a linear adventure, not an open world
>FAR:changing tide
Same as above, Technically you should play "Lone Sail" first, they are linked, but it's less fun.

It's like 20 minutes long and every character has like 3 lines. You've done more reading in this thread, presumably. The fuck.

My problem with the tutorial is that the one part that matters - flying a space ship - they suck at teaching you. Spend more time teaching you how to repair the thing, something you never do.

No, it's just lore, and Myst lore is stupid. It's not like Riven where you kinda need them.
You do need the pics out of one of them for one of the puzzles on the first island. Most of them are just solved by getting the answer from the big dumb puzzle tower and then the Age specific puzzles just solve themselves, really.

Yeah, probably, IIRC, there might be an entry somewhere that's a clue about a hidden switch but it's like 99% lore. You'll probably get the bad ending but whatever.
The same is not true of Riven, that is a definitive "write shit down and read everything twice" puzzle game.
>>
>>719464925
I played realMyst first then the original and honestly full 3D movement doesn't add anything to it. I'd recommend realMyst just because full movement is an easier sell over slideshow simulators, but for replays I just play the original.

Tunic is shit. There are basically no puzzles until the last 10% of the game, and 95% of those puzzles are completely trivial with the remaining 5% expecting you to think outside the box despite everything else in the game being very firmly inside the box.

The big issue is there's no pay-off for it. You solve the golden path, so what?

OW is too simple in terms of puzzles. The world is neat, but the payoff is lame and you barely have to think, even the final puzzle is kind of shit. VS expects you to actually use your brain to solve the puzzles without devolving into mind numbing tedium like deciphering morse code hidden on tile edges, or messing with the game files for meta masturbation purposes.

>>
>>719476267
no, you just have to deal with hundreds of levels of mind numbing tedium that is sokoban

>>719476642
Maybe 20 of those levels could arguably be called sokoban because they expect you to push blocks. Anyone who thinks VS is a sokoban just hasn't played the game.
>>
>>719459316
Yeah. The mods are pretty good. Astral Codec was a pretty neat use of every neat fact that the Outer Wilds devs have said in their interviews
>>
>>719476267
Outer Wilds isn't really a puzzle game to begin with. It's more of an adventure game, since nearly all "puzzles" have an answer for you to find elsewhere.
>>
>>719476752
I can only do so many levels of "you can only walk on tiles once" or "predict the enemies movement!" before I just turn the game off man, youre right that it isnt pure "block pushing" its still tedious as fuck
>>
>>719476821
Sure, I can agree with that. But I grew up with adventure games that expected you to occasionally solve puzzles like old Lucasarts point and click games, so I found OW wanting. I wanted the game to test my knowledge of the systems more, instead of being a general breeze with some nice atmosphere.

>>719476957
Just think through your moves before you make them. Sokoban is complex because you have to work back from the end and work out which order to push every block in, VS is very easy because there's only one block to move, the player, and only one place it needs to go, the exit. Enemy movement is generally extremely simple, if you played something like Bunburrows or Leaf's Odyssey your mind would break.
>>
>>719477150
I never said it was hard, the game's easy as shit, which just adds to the tedium.
>>
>>719458242
>Chants of Sennaar is pretty terrible. Never "takes off" like these games should after the first several puzzles/levels, where the normies have gotten bored and left.
Truth.
It feels too by the book. If you try to reverse engineer the puzzles you really appreciate how fucking lazy the devs were with that game. It's point and click slop that passes for a neat tech demo, with a tacked on metaphor to make it seem deeper that it really is.

Actual spoilers, probably shouldn't read if you play on playing the game: You have a limited amount of "uses" per color(RGB). If you try to "use" a color when that number is a 0 that color ends up getting deleted.

I like every game people mentioned in this thread EXCEPT the outer wilds. I gave it five hours and I hated my time with it. In my first couple of runs I
-flew towards a planet which I couldn’t land on and which disappeared and I could never find again
-knocked a satellite orbiting the planet out of the sky, hoping for it to land on the Earth. It just phased through the ground, wasting my time
-spent a long time trying to land on an object orbiting the sun, and when I was finally able to do it, the games physics fucked up and kicked me off and I lost my ship
-found a meteor covered in ice. Domething is buried in ice, so I deduce ‘oh, I need to wait until near the end of the cycle for when the sun is bigger and the comet is close to it and that will cause the ice to melt!’
Instead of that, absolutely nothing happens and you die.

When I got around to giving up I realised all of the ‘puzzles’ were just reading a note that tells you to go somewhere else and gives you the answer to whatever puzzle is there, rinse and repeat. I’m baffled by the universal praise this game gets.

The comet has a very obvious perihelion close to the sun. The sun is hot. Waiting until the comet gets close to the sun is an obvious idea. When it didnt work the first time, i saw how the sun gets bigger close to the end, so I tried again, thinking i might have enough time to check out the frozen ship for some important information that would help me in future loops. I dont think im being unreasonable making these assumptions.
The game does not belong to stand next to genuinely great puzzle games like obra dinn. Its just moving from one location to the next being given direct guidance on what to do. "Go to the water planet and find the tornado spinning the opposite way". "Hide inside the jellyfish to inslate you from the electricity". Youre not solving puzzles, and the exploration is not rewarding, or particuarly fun. I gave it more than a fair shake and didnt enjoy myself at all. I just dont get it.
>>
>>719488339

People can't say without spoiling the game. You were right about the meteor covered in ice, you need to get closer to the sun and it unlocks some kind of secret passage if i remember right (been years since i've played the game). So it's funny that you complain about that when you were actually close to the solution. That's why people think you're trolling.

>That's why people think you're trolling
No, it's him claiming he's encountered and observed every single thing of the game that most people only notice or attempt many loops in.
Normal people don't go the comet, they either go to the moon because the game hints at there being things there, or they go to Brittle Hollow because that's the first thing they see.
>>
>>719488684
I'll admit I did not try looking at the other side of the comet. I didnt want to get very far away from the frozen spaceship because I assumed i only had a narrow window of time if the ship were to partially unfreeze. I also found it difficult to land on the comet, so I didnt try again after nothing happening twice in a row.

It's ok to be filtered by a game, anon. No need to have a melty.
>>
>>719489142
I played this just after playing obra dinn and golden idol, so i was already conditioned to be looking for small details, but i think you're so demented on accusing me of trolling that theres nothing I can say to convince you otherwise. Also, its an exploration game - i wanted to go explore, not go where the big sign is pointing you. I looked at the map, thought the comet looked cool, so tried going there. I saw the platform orbiting the sun when i was flying to the comet, so i tried that afterward.
>>
>>719489142
He played for 5 hours, going to the comet twice in that time frame seems perfectly reasonable.

>>719489250
You didn't really miss much. The writing is a waste of time, but figuring out why things are happening is fun, even if it is trivial shit like "go in the cyclone spinning the other way". I think you would've enjoyed the game more if you stuck with it and felt more of a desire to work out why the sun was blowing up.
>>
>>719489142
That's more likely but it's not impossible that some people went for the comet
>>719489250
I thought the game was great but i didn't care all that much about the plot either, i just liked trying to solve the cozy mystery in space. It's a relaxing game.
>>
>>719489541
Thanks. I probably just had a lot of bad stuff happen so close to the start that it wore me down very quickly. I just dont see how this game is so often compared to the all time great puzzle games.
>>
>>719489142
The first thing you see is the probe launching station exploding actually. That's one of the very first place I went to.
>>
>>719489529
>i wanted to go explore, not go where the big sign is pointing you
so you intentionally played it wrong, then get mad it's not exactly what you decided it should have been in your head. That's on you, dummy.

Divinity Original Sin 2

You can play it like that, it gives you some clues. At some point though you do have to follow the hint map.

Not all games are for everyone. But I'd say you missed out on a unique game experience. Each environment is great to explore and you piece together the overall story and mystery. Plus gather technology to build more advanced equipment and submersibles
>>
I don't understand how anyone can hate Tunic. The ARG shit is just bonus and you don't have to do a single fairy puzzle if you do not want to. The gameplay is fine for what it is, but the art direction is top notch, the music is stellar, and the sense of adventure is unmatched.

This makes me curious to pick up Blue Prince again, I put it down after getting to room 46 and feeling burnt out. How do you know what the next goal is, like these doors? Just kinda felt too open ended for me to put more time in.

I wish things in Outer Wilds were static and not changing.
>you have all the time
wrong, let's talk about Brittle Hollow, which was my main filter. There you have only a few minutes to reach the lower areas before they're covered in sand. Since I'm geographically inept and have the memory of a goldfish, I struggled to find a path to the sunless city because on the surface there are so many archs with passages you can get in that you get lost, especially if you struggle to land the spaceship easily (like me) and fall down from the bridge every time (like me). After 10 hours of this delirium I gave up, which is sad because the game is really interesting.

You can disable water and food.
Just satisfying yourself with building for fun, or setting yourself a challenge of having aquarium/eggs for all creatures.

Have you noticed that almost every room has two black and white drawings, all in the same art style? Or the chalkboard in the Study? Or wonder what the corkboard in the commissary meant? Did you reach Room 46 again to look at the note on the desk? Didn't you wonder how to open the doors in the Inner Sanctum? Did you not want to discover all the Workshop contraptions? Did you ever discover the Bookstore? There's tons of different leads you can follow. Except for the S.A.C.R.E.D. note in the Clock Tower. That one doesn't lead down a rabbit hole. It was meant to be part of one of the overarching puzzles, but they changed the way the puzzle is solved mid-development; its only purpose now is to indicate the importance of the word "sacred".

Reaching Room 46 is only the first 3rd of the game; stopping there is like quitting Okami after you defeat Orochi.

NTA but,
In OW thread we actually had regular instances of anon giving up, going back to the game later telling himself this time he'll just straight line it.
Then discover it didn't feel as complicated as he remembered.

And I AM one of those anon.
I gave up 10 hours in.
Came back months later, just to try finishing it.
Finished the game in another 10 hours.
Then boughted the DLC which is arguably trickier and finished it in another 20 hours. Read a guiding once but that was because I was so prudent I accidentally missed something we are meant to discover by accident.

One tip:
Put your computer in rumor-mode.
>>
>>719497103
the zelda part of the game is bad and the combat is frankly awful, but the post-game stuff is good enough that it's still worth it slogging through 10 hours of garbage
>>
>>719499650
Detective Grimoire is entertaining but it's basically a visual novel, barely any real puzzle to it, and Lucifer Within Us would be good if it was more than an hour long as it ends right as you get comfortable with it.

I DID beat the game with food/water enabled.
That's why I can tell you in all honesty that it bring nothing to the game but plain repetition.
All you end up doing is setting a farm inside the Cyclops and stock up in water.

A lot of feature of the game didn't make it, you were supposed to have genetic research, and the base was supposed to have flooding other than by you fucking up.
>>
>>719500149
unfortunately this was the 4th or 5th time I've reinstalled the game, thinking "this is the one, I won't give up", writing down notes and being careful about everything. Too bad it doesn't work when you can't find your bearings at all, and as I wrote I tried for 10 whole hours, I have 23 hours on the fucking game at this point.
>>
>>719500494
>can't find your bearings

>>
>>719500637

>>719499179
How the fuck do people have problems landing the ship, you can smash this shit at escape velocity and it stays fine
>>
>>719463053
I enjoyed it for a while. It does a good job of capturing the idea that you are dabbling with dangerous, poorly understood powers, and figuring out how it all works was fun for me. Unfortunately, once you do figure everything out, the game largely just becomes a dull plate-spinning simulator.

>>719431484
The King's Field and Shadow Tower games are pretty good about that. They're made by Fromsoft, but they don't play like the Souls games and are more focused on exploration than combat.

If you have some tolerance for older games, you could also look at Legacy of the Wizard. Figuring out how to progress in it is difficult, but I think it's a fair challenge that never goes into "obscure bullshit you never could have guessed" territory. Definitely read the manual if you try it, though, as some of the information in there is both critically important and difficult to stumble upon otherwise.

nta, I respect you admitting the problem is probably on your side. I wish you good luck to overcome it.
It is absolutely certain that Brittle Hollows, with its constantly crumbling/shapeshifting area, and especially its inverted platforming area above a black hole, will give nausea.

That said, the only place where I even needed the globe was on the Quantum Moon, for obvious reasons. large structure appear and disappear as you look away and solving its mystery require to keep track of where you are on its surface.
