It's a lot of people's first metroidvania so that's no problem, but it might be too hard for you if that's really the only game you've ever played
On the plus side, it's dirt cheap and goes on sale all the time so there's no harm in trying it out. I got it on sale for 3-4 dollars years ago

It depends on you. It wasn't for me, but that's because I could never remember what obstacles that I had to come back for were inaccessible for what reasons or required which kinds of powers, and the backtracking to double check became too much to be worth it, but I also have a goldfish memory.

the combat is really polished and balanced, though apparently some casuals struggle with the bosses.

the biggest issue in the game is the labyrinthine layout. all i can say is, be prepared to commit 30+ hrs to beat it and do NOT take a break or you will forget everything and have to start over.

as a big metroidvania fan I can definitively say its one of the greats
