It’s weird, the idea of “indie smash bros.” sounds so stupidly easy to do or bag in and yet, 99% of the time they never hit the nail for some reason

The appeal of smash bros isn't the gameplay, it's the brands + made by nintendo
You're not going to get better brands than all the big names
A real indie smash bros would be getting all the most popular indie game protags and putting them in one game but that would require lots of money for all the deals you'd have to make

Because there's no overarching company to do the publishing, like there is for Nintendo. Nintendo owns like 90% of the roster in Smash bros, whereas to do an "indie" smash bros, tons of companies would have to come together to agree on the terms of each characters inclusion, profit split, who would be responsible for maintaining the game, etc.

The legal/intellectual property hassle ALONE makes the endeavor too pricey and too time consuming to consider.
