As much as I like CTR it can't be the goat of anything. It was abandoned like a bastard child, the online never fixed, the loading screens never fixed, no pc port. Such wasted potential almost seems out of irrational spite.

I always did like Crash Team Racing than Mario Kart, the roster especially. Crash's series just feels like they have more varied characters while Mario's feels like they're all the same.

probably has more to do with the fact that a lot of Mario characters exist out of utilitarianism rather than being their own character. Luigi exists to be player 2. Only reason Daisy is around is for the same reason when Mario Tennis came around, and the same can be applied to Waluigi. And the literal common enemies feel like padding.
The closest that Crash has is Fake Crash to Wario or Polar to Yoshi. The other characters are distinct opponents, many of who are speaking roles instead of just some guy that shows up gets hit 3 times in 5 seconds and you continue through the worldmap.
The 8 characters in the early Mario Karts was functional and economical, there weren't too many that felt like repeat characters. It only really got bad by the time that Wii came out and they've only made their roster worse since (the kind of bullshit like Dr. Baby PinkGold Peach should be a joke, not an actual thing)
Meanwhile in CTRNF they added almost every single individual character to the roster including far reaches like yaya, hasty, and a fucking crate.
