I've been playing Duke3D and Doom back in early 00's because my dad brought them from the work on a CD-R. Doom didn't ran well on WinXP, but fortunately there was Doomsday source port I found on the CD from game magazine. Also played emulated Genesis games, didn't had internet so I bought a CD with a ROM collection and several emulators on it. Speaking of game magazine CDs, that's also where I got Cave Story first as well, but I got filtered by Balfrog and only came back to it several years later, once I already had internet connection.

I'd argue with you OP but nowadays emulation really is the best option unless you're loaded like fucking Scrouge McDuck all thanks to those fucking collectors. I got into retro gaming thanks to emulators when I was a teen and bought my first retro consoles once I started earning my own money and they weren't really that expensive. A used Super Nintendo with DKC and Mario All Stars in box with the manuels? Got that for 30€. A NES with 4 Controllers, a NES Zapper, and a four score adapter 10 games? 150€ and it even game with quite a bangers. N64, 160€ and I got it with Mario 64 and OoT. Also got myself a Sega Mega Drive (Genesis for you Americans) with Sonic 2 complete in box and in really good condition for 30€. That was nearly ten years ago and I'd hate to imagine what I'd have to pay today.

Maybe this is the thread for this.I would like to rage about old systems...For a long time I had the impression the SNES was the best system of its gen.I grew up with one but I had a couple of Sega games on the family PC.Then it hit me that when you play with the ORIGINAL controllers, the SNES sucks ass.The D-Pad is fucking terrible for fighting games.The game library is not that great either, it is mostly RPGs supported by heavy hitters but the overall library is not fantastic.I feel the Genesis was well rounded in comparison and the titles were mostly unique.Funny enough Sonic might be the weakest 1st party mascot but then again prior to that the mascot was Alex Kidd. Shinobi 3 kicks ass, it was in the Genesis ads yet it does not feel it ever had the same popularity as Metroid or Halo despite being cool as fuck.
