Humanoid mostly since I feel that monsters, while cool, aren't real so I can't really be too scared of them. More scared of them getting me and resetting progress. I do enjoy mechanical ones if they're visually interesting and not sleek metal humanoid.

The best games are where you never see the monster or encounter an actual threat. The only thing that matters in a horror game is atmosphere.
Create a suffocating atmosphere and force the player to do things he doesn't want to.
Think about it, there are more good horror games out there with horrifying ambience than good horror games with just killers that look scary or screech loudly

The problem with this is when the player realizes there are no stakes the game loses all tension. I played Iron Lung, and it fucking sucked cause I knew the game would never actually punish me so it was just me increasing numbers on an x-y grid.

I like clearly recognizable animals that have had crazy shit happen to them to corrupt or malform them
Think dogs with a bunch of bones growing out of it or a horse that just has its neck cut off at the shoulders or an elephant that has giant crystal formations taking over its body

Tbf I'd class the bunkers horror as 1. Animal like with a bit of intelligence, there's nothing inherently supernatural about the threat other than its origin from the Roman tunnel waters etc, the only exposure you're at risk of through the whole game aside from the shotgunner is an animal, literally named "the beast" beast like creature that runs on all fours and crawls around the place like a rat.

When it says supernatural I assumed it means something actually displaying supernatural horror as it threatens you, like walrider phasing through doors and shit in outlast

Yeah, you of course need to maintain the illusion of threat. It's a delicate balance.
Problem with having legitimate threats in a horror game that kill the player is that each death diminishes the horror and alleviates the pressure you've built (or should have built).
It's especially bad if you make a hard to navigate area where the player dies multiple times. That completely atomizes any and all atmosphere you might have built and the game goes from a horror game to an annoying survival game.

The illusion of threat is enhanced by there being an actual threat, if the game doesn't even have a combat system, I'm automatically put into a mode where I know there will never be any real threat that you can't just hide and wait out.
Tension is created by having resources that you have to spend to get past enemies, obviously you need a good atmosphere to back it up.
