The platforming and large levels are actually great despite the flaws. Trying to clear blighttown/the tree was fun. I wish Sen’s fortress was bigger and more complex. I’ve been playing it recently and I hadn’t touched it since release. I was actually surprised how easy it was this time (after playing a couple other souls games since); I spent 110 hours on my DS1 playthrough in 2014. I’m almost done with the DLC and I’m at 37 hours now

I just beat this game yesterday. If you like this game you are mentally ill. This games is horrible, there are very few redeeming qualities, two of which being the world and the lore. The runbacks are horrible, most of your deaths will be from running back to bosses or dumb shit like the bed chaos' arm sending you flying through the map. The main thing i liked about this hunk of overrated garbage was the characters and fast travel being locked behind O&S. Im playing dark souls 2 on the ps3 now and people really said this is worse? How? Ds2 is already so much smoother and so much better than this. I truly think this is one of the worst souls/soulslikes ive ever played; lies of p and Nioh are far better than this. The only good memories i have are gwynevere's tits and firelink shrine.

The environment actually posing a threat to you is a good quality of this game. You actually pay attention to the environment because of it. Modern soulslikes focus too much on bosses

I see that a lot and I’ve found it’s not true at all. On new runs you basically just put together your build and then boss rush the main line and anything else you feel like doing. The open world nature means rushing to put you build together means you might do things in a bit of a different order or come at a certain boss under leveled which helps spice things up.
If you feel like you have to explore the whole map and every single dungeon again, that’s on you, because you really don’t

Elden Ring would have been better with demons' souls style portals to different worlds rather than stitching it all together with some lame, empty overworld. The main dungeon were amazing but all those in-between zones really sour the game. You should have basically warped straight to Stormveil, Lucaria, Volcano Mountain, redmane fort, leyndell + the sewers, haligtree, farum azula, mohgwynn, and whatever fucking place I forgot about. All the traversal really sucked and was particularly bad in SotE where so much of the world was empty and gated by cliffs to force even longer traversal.

They're too short to have more than one grace, but still too big to have you dying and forced to cross from the entrance to the boss gate by foot. So they came up with that solution.

Even the basic 3 wolves spirit ash is too much for most bosses to handle. The Mimic tear or the assassin are overkill. I just stand still and watch my level 10 mimic destroy the game for me.

dark souls 2 is pretty good with a couple of shitty level segments sprinkled in, but then around this area the rest of the game is just dogshit with no highlights anymore. to me it seems like a lot of the issues people had with ds2 are just dark souls 1 issues. ds1 is full of obscene jank and obscurity and some of the worst level design i have seen in action games ever and it took me multiple play attempts to finally get to the end of the game. ds2 and ds3 i beat both with my first character.
