WTF is this dude's problem?
>>

Smeary visual and overreliance on TAA
>>
>>719466012
I don't know who this guy is, but I immediately agree with that sentiment. Trying to "advance" graphics beyond 6th gen was a mistake. Fuck photorealism. Video games should look like video games.
>>
He's probably an annoying video essayist, but he's correct.
>>
>>719466012
PS1 games has better graphics than modern ue5slop

he's a pseud who cannot into math. he really is not the right person to be shitting on ue5, as easy as it is to shit on ue5.

>WTF is this dude's problem?
he spends all day seething about TAA on reddit and making Youtube videos about goyslop instead of actually doing the work he constantly claims he'll do

nobody can prove him wrong apparently

In a business, the most succesful and efficient large-scale technological solutions will be widely applicable technologies that affect a lot of things at once. Things like raytracing or temporal effects are useful in large projects because they're a one-click technology that saves an insane amount of time and applies its effects to a wide variety of things.

What that guy advocates for is essentially throwing away those technologies because he cannot accept their downsides, and wants every developer and every game to work on a thousand little workarounds and bandaids and hand-crafted tricks instead, to satisfy how he believes games should be rendered. Even if you argue that his idea how rendering should work is correct, from a business perspective his approah is completely non-viable because of the increase in cost and time to finish. At the end of the day what he advocates for is just shouting "OPTIMIZE OPTIMIZE OPTIMIZE" and asking for more work and more workarounds.

Hypothetically let's say you spend 10000 hours of dev time making a game with quick efficient methods like temporal rendering, and the game's a success. Why would you spend 20000 hours of dev time creating a thousand little graphical workarounds and tricks for this game, just to achieve a difference that 90% of people won't care about and won't make the game sell any better?

Why should I as a customer care about making it easier for the developer if the end product is shit?
I want good experience and UE5 mass produced garbage isn't that.
>>
>>719468524
Do you think the gameplay of UE5 games will magically be better if the game is slightly less smeary?
>>
>>719468565
not him, but it's a step in the right direction.
Fix problems, one at a time until things are good.
>>
>>719466012
His scam attempt failed miserably.
>>
>>719468565
If all things stay the same but graphics and performance get better it's an objective improvement.
>>
where's his video game

>that saves an insane amount of time
Cool, does that mean games will take less time to develop or will cost less to reflect this?
>>
>>719468524
>Why should I as a customer care about making it easier for the developer if the end product is shit?
Because if companies take this guy's advice, they won't magically fire all the pajeets and rehire better devs. Games will just take 2x longer to come out. Time is the main resource of game development, and whenever you're forced to go from an efficient widely applicable technology to a thousands little workarounds, it massively increases dev time. Would you be willing to accept games taking a decade to release just beacuse they'll have slightly less smearing? Their gameplay won't be any better.

>he really is not the right person to be shitting on ue5
No such thing or person exists, you just need a pair of fucking eyeballs to see for yourself what's going on
He just points out the obvious and brings attention to it, don't act like it isn't an industry wide spread issue and has been for a good while now.

Maybe they will be fucking playable for once, a fucking PS2 game remake lags on the most powerful gpu in the market ffs
>>
>>719466012
He has one correct opinion about TAA leading to blurry, low definition visuals that rely on sharpening filters. Unfortunately he has a massive ego, little self-awareness and very little actual game development expertise, so he's regarded as a moronic clown among actual game developers
>>
>>719468806
I used to jokingly call this guy Optimization Jesus, but he is actuall Optimziation Muhammad. Holy War on UE5 devs.
>>
>>719468761
Not every game is AAA, I don't care about those and AAA space is the one with the most of in house tech anyway.
But UE5 is default engine for smaller studios.
It's not only about TSR being shit.
We can't bruteforce our way with better hardware anymore.
But UE5 is pushing ease of development over performance and visual quality.
>>
>>719468789
i mean he's begging for money to "fix ue5" mate
>>
>>719469186
>UE5 is pushing ease of development over performance
Exactly the same thing is happening in other parts of the software industry. Optimization is dead, nobody cares about quality, everything is about maximizing speed of development, even if the end product is garbage and has 10x the system requirements of 10 years ago, for much the same or worse quality output. It's a bad time in history to care about software quality.

Games are shit both in terms of gameplay and graphics nowadays.

Same problem I got, games look worse, run worse and demand more expensive hardware

john blow is a blowhard but he once said something I found interesting, that developers have a borderline moral responsibility to make optimized programs, as the sheer amount of human time as a species unnecessarily wasted waiting for software to load and work is the equivalent of entire lifespans
>>
Nvidia is in a sunk-cost situation because a lot of tech from UE5 onward relies on TAA being the only AA option, things like DLSS and frame generation would not work with their current implementation without TAA. Nvidia would rather find a way to fix the issues of TAA than ever rolling back a decade worth of tech to go back and trying out something like MSAA to built off of instead.
>>
>>719470737
He might be a blowhard but he cares about the craft sincerely in a way that most developers don't. Johnathan Blow is also a spectacular faggot on certain topics, but he also cares deeply about quality and work ethic.
