The combat in this game sucks fucking shit.The beauty of turn based combat is that damage is unavoidable and you need to think of ways to mitigate it by building your characters, making trade offs between offense and defense and properly using your abilities.The most basic ass example of this is putting on fire resistant gear and casting fire resistance spells before fighting a dragon.A more advanced example is figuring out under which circumstances an enemy casts its party wide nuke spell and buffing your defense or using a spell that counters that spell before it is used.But in this game, you just press 1 button at the right time and all the damage you would have taken becomes 0.You don't need to think about enemy abilities or your builds or making counter builds.You just memorize the animations and press the button.This makes it possible to completely forego defense and just damage max on all your characters and as a result you kill most enemies before they even get to do anything by the end of chapter 2.So keep in mind that whenever someone says "oh, turn based games are totally in demand right now, just look at Expedition 33" know that that person is being dishonest. E33 is not a turn based game. It's just your regular parry slop but with a menu.

It's amazing how no one talks about this game. I finished it recently and wanted to shit on it but it's near impossible finding an active thread. Story sucks and is getting more criticism and the game play as OP pointed out is just stack damage and see if you can burst the boss, because the game punishes for you for now bursting the boss.
>>719469850I've not played this game for a long time, but consider it this way, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth/Remake had a parry system/dodge system in it too but it's fine in those games because the entire game isn't centered around them. Only in like solo run difficult simulations might you want to use these tools extremely effectively. Otherwise you have enough freedom in build to change how you want to approach the boss and with what build. In E33 it's so focused around parry because if you don't parry, the boss is doing 13 attacks AoE and will just wipe your party. I was doing one boss with low level characters and as I got to 33% HP, it started breaking out a much more extreme variation of its moveset which got me a few times. You can just bang your head on the wall or you can just come back with major offensive pictos and just one shot it before it can even get to that moveset.

Act 1 at least had just like that Disney "WOAH THE WORLD IS SO COOL" moments where people are just exploring the new world. But the interactions and motivations of the characters are so basic and hollow, seemingly intentional considering the twists, that it's only driven forward by shock. Otherwise the narrative is literally people just showing up randomly for a few minutes, talking around you and the player characters and then leaving without you understanding anything but getting a few guesses in. They literally keep doing that vague roundabout talking of saying nothing at all till Act 3 where they actually finally reveal the plot rather then just talk cryptically. I don't mind turn based games that do allow you to dodge attacks like that, but a lot of attacks were delayed to the point where first time you see it, you're just randomly guessing, and your punishment is dying in one hit. It's excessive. But on the flip side, there's no real punishment for dying either. You just try the fight again from the start. I don't know how to describe it but this sort of game design just rubs me the wrong way. And while it doesn't really hurt the game, the timed hit aspect of your attacks was retarded, because the timing isn't based on the animation of your attacks. It's just a button prompts that shows up without any sort of logic to it.
