No way man, they're gonna keep making Castlevania games forever! ...forever... forever...
>>
how does metroid differ from castlevania and why is the genre called metroidvania
>>
Now here are some of your no-name games: Hollow Knight? Nine Sols?

Because think of SOTN as the main game that popularized what is now considered a metroidvania and that was basically a hybrid of a Castlevania game and Metroid game with some RPG elements too

NES Castlevania had linear stages instead of a full map like Metroid. Castlevania then became more complex while Metroid stayed the same, just changed the colors of doors and said you can't go in there without a different gun nerd.

>how does metroid differ from castlevania and
melee vs gunplay
>why is the genre called metroidvania
because castlevania and metroid are both side scrolling dungeon crawlers with action combat.

Castlevania's split into two groups
>Classicvania
>Metroidvania
Classivanias are linear action-platformers. Metroidvanias get their name from taking the open map layout of Metroid basically beat-for-beat, but add RPG mechanics, like levels, equipment, items, etc. As a result Metroidvanias skew more action-RPG.

the open map and needing unlocks to progress is metroid and everything else is castlevania?
>>
>>719490721
Dude just play Castlevania (NES), Portrait of Ruin (DS) and any Metroid and you'll understand.
>>
>>719490721
I think the name comes from the Castlevania series establishing precedent in using Metroid's formula as a genre mold to begin with, as there are a lot of "Metroidvanias" that don't even have the RPG stuff. You could also make the distinction between emphasis on melee or ranged as another anon did, as Castlevania games popularized melee primary attacks for the genre.

Castle had RPG elements like leveling, inventories, and shops.
>>
Catlevania was never good

That's a different game, retard.

SQ is more of an rpg then a metroid, instead of having a big map with splitting routes your progression is mostly meeting certain conditions to be able to acces one linear area after another.
