Why did you buy a steamdeck instead of a switch?
>>
I didn't buy either. I don't play portables.
>>
Because switch has no games
>>
To play my pc games on lunch breaks/dead hours, with a switch i'd have to rebuy the games and lose progress, which is counter intuitive.
>>
a steam deck is a portable steam account
I don't think a PC with a steam account on it is a switch killer. It's kind of a competitor but the two are two different markets
OP has kids to play his switch with, right?
>>

I have a Steam Deck and a Switch 2.

The Deck is a portable PC with 40 years worth of games, plus Switch games can be emulated on it.

the majority of those do kill the nintendo equivalent tho. If nintendo didn't have a disney like grip on japan and their fans most people would have see that nearly all those are objectively better console

Third party support. That's it. I already outgrew Mario bros, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metroid (Prime 4 looks like shit). I do still like Pokemon but the games have been mediocre for a long time so meh. Fire Emblem, on the other hand, is the only Nintendo exclusive i'll miss. But Engage was shit so if I'm lucky the next games will also be shit

Nobody was claiming the Deck was going to be a Switch killer. They were saying it was going to disrupt the handheld market a bit, lead to the creation of competing models, and make Nintendo try a little harder with the Switch 2. All of which happened.

The switch and the steamdeck have the same fundamental problems
>too heavy for comfy handheld gaming
>hardware is too shit to run anything good looking
You can get better emulation devices for less like a retropi or retroid
You can get better handhelds for proper graphics like the ally x.
But the steamdeck and switch/2 both feel like a shit execution of a simple concept for the sake of keeping it cheap.

I can hold the deck up to my face level for 2 hours straight or more, I usually set it down when I move or when the battery drains.
Only valid excuse for not being able to is you're a sportsman/worker with wrist tendinitis.
That being said, the RP5 seems like a pretty good device, you should've went for the "portable" argument.

People who have only ever owned consoles don't comprehend this. It's an entirely alien concept to them. They may not literally believe that you have to repurchase Deck versions of all your games for Deck, but the opposite doesn't occur to them until you point it out.

>Nobody was claiming the Deck was going to be a Switch killer
LOL what the fuck is this revisionism? Every Deck thread was about how tendies were btfo by the Deck and how Deck emulates Switch so Switch is obsolete.
>Nintendo try a little harder with the Switch 2 [...] which happened
LMAO on what fucking planet did they "try harder"? The screen has worse response time. The games run worse and have worse textures. Their big gimmick is built-in Discord. Everything about Switch 2 is absolutely minimal effort and it still outsells the Deck.
>>
>>719493540

> PSP - "This is going to be a DS killer"

OK, this is borderline incorrect. First of all, the PSP was announced before anyone knew about the DS. Sony made claims that the 'PSP will elevate portable entertainment out of the handheld gaming ghetto" was in reference to the Game Boy Advance. Which caused Nintendo to go into panic mode, and rush the DS out of development early. But when Nintendo revealed the DS, there was still a sentiment that the PSP would crush it sales wise. But I don;t think Sony themselves ever made that claim.

>this is going to be the switch killer
Here's the actual picture you should have put in there OP
>>
I got so much more mileage out of my deck than my switch. The deck just has more games I would rather play, steam has better sales, and the joycons feel like shit to hold and use. Downside is the occasional Linux fuckup and the time it takes to set up non-steam games, but switch is "pay a subscription fee to play a handful of games that we want you to be able to," which doesn't hold a candle to "play all of your ROMs for free plus ROM hacks"
>>
>>719502867
Why are both Sony and Microsoft so fixated on killing gaming and removing it from its niche? It's supposed to be for kids and nerds, dammit.
>>
>>719494331
Nice projection faggot, lmao.
>>
When is the deck 2 coming out? Why is there talk of a new valve steam machine?
>>
>>719500194
They really are though. The precision you get out of those touchpads makes playing strategy games or even old-school point-and-clicks feel natural on a handheld. Not to mention the customizability-people sleep on just how much input tweaking you can do on the Deck. If you're struggling with them, I'm guessing you're not using custom profiles or tuning the sensitivity right.
>>
>>719504159
Gaming is about making money
Normal people want to spend money on real world sports and shooting
Gaming isn't about dumb fantasy shit anymore, find a new hobby
>>
>>719493540
i sold my switch and kept my deck because the exact same games i would buy on switch cost 40 dollars more, and i already owned the games i wanted to play on steam
>>
>>719505015
>When is the deck 2 coming out?
Early 2028 around the same time as the PS6 handheld that won't dock, btw.
>Why is there talk of a new valve steam machine?
Valve is working on one and constantly testing it. It won't be like the original Steam Machines which were OEMs, this is like the Steam Deck, made fully in-house, by Valve. That's coming in late 2027. Don't take the Fremont specs seriously because chances are the final console will use a custom AMD APU based on Zen 6 RDNA 5 and then make a low-powered version for the Deck 2.

Why is the Deck 2 releasing shortly after the home box, well that's because AMD always releases the Desktop chip first then the mobile version right after.
>>
>>719493540
Nobody who wasn't a conflict obsessed loser said the deck was a switch killer.
It's a portable computer for people who use steam, it's outright copying the switch for control layout because it's efficient but it's in no way competing with the switch.
>>
>>719493540

>>

>>
>>719505224
Your era of gaming is coming to an end, Sony's attempt to fight Nintendo, and Microsoft's attempt to fight Valve will end in failure. Sony and Microsoft will go full third party and gaming will return to its roots under Nintendo and Valve, console and PC gaming where everything will condense and become a niche again. AAA is unsustainable and will no longer exist in the future no matter which country it comes from.
>>
>>719505434
They will launch it with Half-Life 3, and the game will be optimized for Steam Deck 2. The Steam Machine 2 will act as a gateway to get the SteamOS on desktops, it's the first step. The next step is getting third party prebuilts to use SteamOS, then getting SteamOS out to the people, same strategy as for SteamOS for PC handhelds.
>>
I've been out of touch with computers for more than a decade.
Can one play Source games on this Steam Deck? What's the expected life time of such portable consoles?
>>
>>719505643
You can play anything on the deck, it's a computer shaped like a handheld that boots to steam in big picture mode but you can boot back to the desktop and do whatever you want. It's running on Linux, a valve fork.
If you mean the life of its components, I've had mine since the first wave (2022) and it still works perfectly. If you mean how long until they release the next one, we don't know. You can still play whatever you want unless ps5 tier games. Modern graphically demanding titles only work on low settings.
>>
>>719495297
God damn I love the vita so much. It's definitely the most "premium" feeling handheld out there, even after all this time. However, the steam deck is still the most versatile option today. Ended up selling mine after some today, though, since it's not really pocketable and I already have a high end PC.
>>
Nintendo has released 2 good games in the last ten years. Third party support is surprisingly good, but the switch versions of games almost universally have serious performance issues, even with indie shit.
>>
>>719506121
A steam deck downsized to vita size keeping ergonomics and trackpads would be the ideal handheld.
Sad the vita scene never took off.
>>
As far as my actual game libraries went, both the PSP & Vita killed the DS & 3DS.

DS+PSP imo is still the greatest 'generation' of any gaming platform ever.

>A steam deck downsized to vita size keeping ergonomics and trackpads would be the ideal handheld.

I think the Vita was trying to compete with the emerging smart phone market as well as the 3DS at the same time. It was destroyed by both... as well as proprietary memory cards.

Both got royally fucked in the "smartphone games" era. It's easy to forget but these were the fearmongering years of literally every retard under the sun and "industry experts" publishing weekly articles talking about how handheld gaming was dead because of smartphones. It's easy to think the 3DS did great (and it mercilessly shat all over the vita), but the gaming market was way bigger compared to the previous generation yet both sold a fuckton less units than their predecessors. It wasn't even close.
Both systems deserved better, especially the vita.
