That's some good shit.
I'm playing it for this first time, but that's some pretty advanced mechanics for its time.

favorite song so far?

If you don't play RPGs it might give you that idea at first, then you have to try really hard to ignore how nothing works well because the game is horribly unfinished and was rushed out of the oven without basic playtesting.

Dude, VIDEO GAMES

I'm only at the start but I enjoyed the boss fight music so far.

>>719495504
How so? You can break the game or something?

The late game demon training dummy breaks the game. Im replaying to see if the early human dummy also breaks it. 100 in an affinity just kinda smashes through the defense of every enemy so much that you can ignore weapon switching. At least it works like that for the demon dummy

This game is literally squaresoft makes a Fromsoft game

Long story short the game itself is already completely broken, again, it's one third of what it was supposed to be.
The game ends very abruptly, lots of plotlines just end, lots of characters were rewritten into something else at the last moment, Tieger and Neesa being the most painful examples of that, there's tons of mechanics piled on top of each other but without any consideration of how they'd work with each other or even their basic internal balance, one specific Chain Art alone completely bypasses every single mechanic in the game and that's far from being the most blatant issue.
If I were to get into an indepth conversation of VS' design problems I could write several posts but you really wouldn't get what I'm talking about until you play the game yourself and actually do a NG+ run or two, it's a technical marvel for sure but it was also rushed to shit and you really have to be very, very generous and open minded to consider it good in any way or shape.

Amazing music though, one of Sakimoto's most striking scores from those days, the percussions alone are fucking crazy.

Gaming mechanics are evolving backward, that's not surprising.

And I bet half of that was the opening cinematic. Basically, wonders of doing everything in-engine and no voice acting.

I wanted to like this game so badly but it's just dogshit compared to basically every other squaresoft game of that era. it looks great though and it's an okay concept, it just isn't fun imo. and the battle system is a still barely fleshed out version of the original PE battle system. I just don't like it and it gets way too much praise. Also the fucking main character is wearing ass-less chaps and the main villian has his skirt down to the shaft of his cock. super fucking gay. who made this btw? the same guy who made tactics? wtf? was it a humiliation ritual. picrel is a far better game. kys's

I like it even if its broken. The game still presents enough of a challenge if you just stroll through unprepared. You are still tested to use the various mechanics to get through. Its hard to fine tune a boss that takes no damage initially, make it too easy to break through and you have a game with a bunch of useless damage modifiers. Make it too hard and you have a system with no flexibility but many variables that you must use. I feel VS hits a decent balance.
Your paragraph just reminds me of a game with far worse balance issues than VS, Shadow tower abyss. Where the way to break it is the front and center defining feature, guns.

>Shadow tower abyss
What's the issue with this one? I finished it, and while the whole game system is very unorthodox, it kind of make sens within itself.
>>
One of my favorite games of all time, played it for the first time on the PS3 and it still blew me away. Loved the battle system and the level design.
>>
>>719499223
Guns bro, they bypass everything in the entire game. That is durability, spacing, staggers, among having extreme damage, ammo availability and feeling like shit to use. You also can sell all the shitty drops everywhere to buy more ammo than youll need
Shadow tower 1 is the far superior game, there are 2 bow drops youll find naturally and at best you get 4. Each shot lowers durability. Shadow tower 1 is perfectly balanced, you cant rely on the overpowered ranged stuff, you still have to play it like kingsfield an interact with repairing often. Shadow tower abyss is one of the worst sequels ever made, its bafflingly bad.

>>719499981
Hoooo, my bad you said it was Abyss but I though we were talking about the first one.
Yeah, I agree completely then
>>
Any hacks that fix this game? You can probably turn it into a normal action RPG by removing all that affinity garbage.
>>
>>719495029
Bad post
>>
>>719500095
Idk how you can confuse abyss for the first lol.
Shadow tower is also better because it goes downward, making it non linear. If you want a fun time on replay, rush through the human and earth world. Skip the first boss Apollos, rush through the first acid area and drop straight into the endgame levels from there. You can survive even at low SP. Thats my preferred way to play.
