They wanted to produce the cheapest crap to maximize profits and were basically allowed to do this until a competitor broke into the weird monopolistic world of toy manufacturing, raised standards, and still made record profits.The bigger issue (besides anti-competitive measures in the industry), is that base game SP AAA development doesn't add up anymore. It is a mixture of bloat, incompetence, stagnation, and inability to grow the market that is causing this. All companies are realizing they would rather try their hand at live service, because success there means you are a billionaire now rather than just surviving to make another game as it is with AAA SP games. They are so cheap with the special editions in order to run up the margins to make up for the base game development.
