I'm looking for challenging turn based JRPGs with fun battle systems. Preferably not insanely dialogue heavy. Does this fit the bill? What else is out there? Tactics style games are also acceptable. I haven't tried many JRPGs outside of the normie canon.
>>719512007>Does this fit the bill?yes
SMT is only challenging if your only exposure to RPGs is mashing A in Pokemon. If you want a real challenging RPG, play Romancing Saga 2 or its Remaster/Remake Romancing Saga 2: Revenge of the Seven. Make sure if to play Hard on the remaster.
>>719512130>romsaga 2This shit was way easier than nocturne on my first run, though playing a lot of smt probably helped
>>719512007Play digital devil saga too, its more story heavy but its still only 2-3 minute cutscenes between dungeon crawls
>>719512007I like Nocturne but it's far from complex>hit enemy weaknesses and have a team comp that doesn't stack weaknesses>USE BUFFS AND DEBUFFS>use press turn to skip party members with weak attacks when possibleGive it a try tho, it's the only JRPG that I really like.
>>719512007Romancing Saga 2 remake. You can also try the other ones if you are feeling more adventurous. SMT is another classic. Shin Megami Tensei V is fun, but the world feels... watered down, compared to older SMT. Devil Survivor and Strange Journey are good too. Modern Persona and modern Devil Summoner/Soul Hacker you can safely ignore. The Last Remnant Star Ocean TSSRRadiant HistoriaIf you fancy a mindfuck, Knights in the Nightmare
>>719512007nocturne is still very good, especially on hard. but you need to feel the game to play it on hard, so normal for youthis is like best jrpg ever. but, smt vv is better. but nocturne is still one of best
>>719513023>, Knights in the Nightmareknights in the nightmare is very good game but one cannot play it. only psp version is okay to play, ds version is shit and switch version only japanese.
>>719513131>nocturne is still very goodUnmatched aesthetics
>>719512130>play Romancing Saga 2Bruh what, it's just final fantasy with poorly explained mechanical systems. All jrpgs are shallow as a puddle.
>>719512007Baten Kaitos, specifically Origins
>>719513218I didn't even know there was a PSP version. How can you play it withoutthe stylus ?Still surprised the Switch port haven't seen a global release yet, I suppose there may be some legal trouble around the old english translation ?
>>719513331the remake explains almost everything EXCEPT how time skips are actually determined and how some named characters cannot learn skills their class/primary damage stat.
>>719512130>If you want a real challenging RPG, play Romancing Saga 2 or its Remaster/Remake Romancing Saga 2: Revenge of the Seven. Romancing Saga 2 is a great and acceisble way to get into the Saga franchise.Another favorite of mine is Minstrel Song.
>>719513432>I didn't even know there was a PSP version. How can you play it withoutthe stylus ?come on, psp kitn game is main version. there are lots of talking added to characters, and some other stuff. controls on nds was pretty bad, you move sprite using analog stick on psp.
there was one 7th gen jrpg that ive seen anons talk about, forgot what it was called but apparently it had a mechanic that punished level grinding and had a bunch of complex battle mechanics that were poorly explained
