when they introduced slot based building system, shogun 2 if I remember correctly
>but the game was good
yeah it was decent but all issues that total war has today begun with shogun and trying to be more arcade board game than a cool simulation of kingdom menagment and battles. now look at wh 3 it's like a shitty mobile game

Europa Barbarorum was based. EB2 was shit however, I hated the MTW2 battle engine.

Rome 2 was the startm with its entire marketing being bullshots and fake videos, and it still made them a shitton of money.
Then Warhammer brought in the kind of fanboy that will buy any and all DLC, but also pushed the old historical fans out, and so CA is now chained to Warhammer and maybe 40k if they're fucking insane enough to try it. CA is just too addicted to the Warhammer fanboy money, it even overrode the Chinese money from 3K.

shogun 2 when they castrated projectile physics because things like arrows losing kinetic power to gravity or archers on elevated terrain having a range advantage confused casuals
that was also the first experimentation of removing/abstracting siege equipment

obviously it was too early to notice back then but that was when that "trend" begun
