Psychology and mental wellbeing needs to be a mechanic just like fatigue or hunger. We can make characters hurt and kill the player character in the physical ways, they need to be able to hurt and even die mentally and psychologically as well. If we starve them they starve and eventually die, if we force them to stay in a room indefinitely, they should mentally starve go mad. It seems the core problem of the frustration with Zomboid is that devs have zero vision or do not communicate what their vision is, to the g@mer it makes them look like they are planning features week to week. New systems constantly prop up left and right and older ones that still haven't been fleshed out are abandoned or at least seem to be. Remember when the big thing of B42 was animals and animal husbandry, and then the focus shifted towards the crafting overhaul? Remember the mixing fluids shit that was talked about in a couple of devblogs and serves literally zero purpose in normal gameplay? Remember that stealth is still ass, combat still has you whiffing at critical times, you still get scratched through 3 layers of clothes, zombie migration is still fucked, there's no roving hordes (present in even Romero movies)? Remember that zombie spawning inside closed off buildings without windows doesn't happen (can't bait them out) without a mod? Remember that the UI is still dogshit and every action from planting seeds to building things is tedious as fuck?
Zomboid is a detailed simulation of zombie survival and I give it props for that, there's nothing like it. However if you asked me if I wanted to have a fun zombie survival experience I'd pick any of the less detailed survivals out there like 7DTD, Zed Zone, Invisible Strain that have less features but know what they want to be.

You can pause the game broski. But if you want a cohesive zombie survival sim there are games that while not as complex provide a more fun experience. Zomboid feels hollow after ~50 hours of gameplay and B42 is the worst time to get into the game considering the amount of tweaks and mods to make it bearable.

Week One mod is probably what that anon is getting at. As well as it'd be COOL to "find out" the cause of the outbreak by delving into the Military Base or something, being able to radio it out of the zone or something.

The Fall of the world in the game needs to be spread to the end of the first or second month, not two weeks. This would facilitate npc gameplay and out of map dynamic events.

It drops a instruction manual on your lap to read but doesn't pause the game. Maybe this was different in earlier versions but for a new player its fucking jarring. As an aside, roving hoards/migration doesn't bother me too much because unless they really put their balls to the walls to make sometype of SUPER lightweight way to simulate stuff far far off screen (which is resource intensive) it's not gonna happen. I'm not too upset with those failures. The zombie spawning in houses thing is almost inexcusable, ya. The problem with that I bet is a car driving past a road will cause ALL the zombies in the houses to walk outside leading to weirdly deserted neighborhoods. They could add a "sound dampening" effect to houses but we already know that would be a odyssey for them.

the whole point of combat is to feel really dangerous, even after 200+ hrs into a run. the game is more about planning, logistics and preparing and tactics rather than actual combat skills. even if you're really good at kiting hordes, the game won't forgive you for a single mistake. For forgetting to feed your character, or not carrying the proper aid to help you last longer from strains/sleep deprivation

calories are a real issues to maintain, after winter, most buildings won't have loot anymore, you can sustain on meat (fishing, farming and hunting/trapping), but it won't give you the calories to survive. if you don't spend at least one month prepping for winter (e.g preserving calorie-dense food) then you'll enter spring in a state not suited for combat. your weak character will have to spend a lot of time regaining their lost strength and you can get caught up in sleep deprivation spirals

I am starting to think that I never liked Zomboid. Scavenging around and building your base sounds cool until it's one hit deaths + permadeath + glacial progression, long grind, watching green bars and no endgame goal. This is one of those games that is fun to think about playing but lame when you actually play it

It makes sense when think about it this way, the problem is that the devs do it too literally so just like real life, most of Zomboid gameplay is mundane boring shit and what is not boring shit is underbaked (i.e. everything that has to do with fighting and interacting with zombies).

It was like 5 or 7 years ago (jesus christ) that I remember reading some of the build 42 updates. A programmer was in the hospital, and they just gave these bland slice of life updates always trying to buy time. Still, I had some faith it might work out.

i checked back this January and saw the game was still early access. That's when I knew it was a scam.

The game is boring and unplayable without cars.
Because of MUH REALIZM, your character moves super slow (even though the game is not in real time, so actually your character is technically much slower than a irl human), getting anywhere without a car is a huge pain. Even dragging some logs to your base from 2 blocks away takes forever without a car.

theres new armor you can craft, but all of it is heavy and makes your character uncomfortable (yes they added a discomfort moodle for some reason) rendering it all not worth it

you also have to find clay and stones to build furnaces and then you need an anvil to craft a forge......just fucking play minecraft at this point

There is really no reason to interact with it. I mean unless you are doing pure wilderness survival whats the point in pottery, blacksmithing, knapping, etc.? I'd rather they focused on crafting that lets you make and put armor on cars with scrap or make unique junk weapons. You know, staples of zombie media.

Stuff like basements and the new music/lighting are cool. Animals seem more a long term thing but I guess they are interesting. Probably not worth the long wait, but thank god this game has workshop stuff.

The crafting system exists for "late game" where you have a bunch of skills, a bunch of magazines to know recipes and the maps lacking in easily accessible resources.
If you're the average person the only thing I can see you ever making with the new crafting menu is a sling backpack as soon as you spawn if you don't just immediately find a normal backpack.
