recommend me a good jrpg /v/ ive been looking into the ys series but the games seem to be too childish for my taste i dunno
>>719535956There are SO MANY GOOD JRPGs that have released recently op, you have no idea.Fear and Hunger 1 and 2Clair Obscur Expedition 33SMTV Vengeance Yakuza Infinite Wealth I strongly recommend Fear and Hunger

>>719535956Play Star Ocean
>>719536468True>>719536680F&H and Clair Obscur aren't made in Japan but they are JRPGs in structure
>>719535956I'm playing FF16. Just got to the 5 year time skip and it still isn't bad. I fixed performance too aside from occasional crashes with the pre-rendered movies. I actually wouldn't mind just removing the movies if I could so I could play the game normally. I'm still waiting for it to fall off.
Is persona 5 worth $15? it's on the humble choice...Also is it true that the game is like 80 hours long? FF7 rebirth left me a bit exhausted 2bh...
>>719535956Chrono Trigger is still to this day the single best JRPG experience.
>>719536243>>719536468Holy shit tastePlay Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance instead OP
>>719537076Yeah 80hrs minimum Also buy P5 Royal, it's the definitive edition
>>719536243Whoops I see you did actually list smtv vengeance Still, shit list otherwise
>>719537136so... why is it so long? what do you usually do? dungeons?Last SMT I played was 3 on the ps2 like 15+ years ago...
>>719535956Romancing SaGa 2Black SoulsExpedition 33Crystal Project
>>719537320Most of Persona is the school life sim part
>>719535956Look outside.Rather on the short side (6-10h), meant to be played multiple times, great art and music.
>>719535956Good call. Avoid Falcom games. They're very tryhard and immature and devolve into low quality coomer shit more and more with each entry.
>>719535956Astlibra
Remake coming soon too
>>719537030Or when I say I fixed performance I mean "It runs above 15 fps and doesn't crash my computer anymore"
>>719537320A mix of dungeon crawling and visual novel social simulator elements Basically you self insert/life sim a Japanese high school student over the course of a year Hang out with friends, go to the library, work a part time job, or yes, go dungeon crawling You make like 15 different friends who have 10x 5 minute cutscenes each to max out their friendship route, to get gameplay bonus abilities and better pokemonIt's a very unique mix and if it hooks you the 80hrs will fly by
>>719537692No Balthier no buy
>>719537698How?
>>719537813It doesn't have the WotL additions?
How much better is Vengeance than vanilla SMTV?I beat vanilla when it came out on the Switch. I bought SMTV:V and I got maybe like 20% of the way through the new canon, and I liked the new bosses but exploring the map again just drained me of any motivation to play.
>>719537818Let's seeFFXVI fixSpecial Kreplace FMVs with this mod https://www.nexusmods.com/finalfantasy16/mods/84 because the cutscenes are lower resolution (still crashes on them sometimes though)download Process Lasso and disable core 0 in the CPU affinityAnd there you have it. Now you can play the game at a lower than PS5 resolution.
>>719535956>too childish for my tasteEarly Ys games are just fun action RPGs that don't overstay their welcome. If you want something a bit more RPG even if action based from Falcom, I'd highly recommend Brandish 1 and 2, and Revival Xanadu. The latter is one of my own personal favorite games that has a decent albeit very different followup in Xanadu Next, and the first two Brandish games are very solid, even on the SNES ports imo. They'll take some time to get used to control wise however, as they're essentially first person dungeon crawlers that play like top down hack n slash games. Other recs:Dragon Quest - love this series, DQ3 is imo one of the best games I've played as an overall package, even if there's stuff in other games I like more individually. I would highly recommend you play at least DQ1 and 2 though first, and DQ1 is pretty short. It would not be unreasonable to beat it in a few days, if not one day. Shin Megami Tensei - Very solid series overall. Love the music, visual style, and gameplay throughout for different reasons from game to game. I prefer the first person dungeon crawlers on SFC (and Strange Journey on DS) but 3, 4, and 5 are all fantastic games even if I have some nitpicks with each one. The occult nature of the games feels a lot heavier with the older games too, which help set them apart from other games, even within its own franchise. Wizardry - While the original Sir-Tech series isn't Japanese in origin, it's part of the groundwork for JRPGs and still holds up wonderfully, mechanically. I'd recommend the PS1 ports overall for 1-5. You can still export your party between then (except for 4 as it's a standalone game), the visuals are good, and I like the music. You also have an auto-map if you want it, but Wizardry is pretty fun to draw your own maps for. I've played a bit of the Gaiden series of Wizardry games by ASCII and they're pretty damn good too.
>>719537813Oh, I guess it's trying to just be a remake of vanilla FFT. That's not the worst really. All that work to get Balthier and Cloud and they're both just level 1 when recruited was fucking bullshit

>>719537945It's mostly the same. If repeating maps killed your motivation then you likely won't get through it since all but one is recycled.
I loved Metaphor but unlocking and leveling up the late-game classes was a pain in the ass. Honestly think I had more fun with Press-Turn in that game than in any of the SMT games
>>719537945Every SMT is practically the same. Persona adds the social links to switch it up but even that's get kind of boring

>>719536680JRPG refers to RPGs made in the Japanese fashion (Wizardry derivatives), not strictly RPGs made in Japan.
>>719538761JRPGs literally mean RPGs made in japan, hence the J for Japanese.
>>719538539This is indisputably a shit list of games for full on weebs. Xenoblade is garbage and Tales of Anime are budget bin JRPGs with no quality.

>4 discs This was practically unheard of for a 360 game to have multiple discs. I only played the demo back then but it seemed pretty ambitious
How the fuck did Persona, a social commentary type occult themed game, get lumped in with square enix mcdonalds tier games and pokemon of all things? Do people just turn their brains off and only recognize the social sim elements when they play Persona?
Blue Reflection 1 + 2must love anime, jks, magical girls, japanese 'humor' and light yuri
>>719539104why?

I love JRPGS.>>719535956Older Ys games are basically modern Japanese porn games without the porn.
>>719536243>>719537098>SMTV Vengeancedon't play this gay atlus shit. it's all just rote memorzation of weaknesses. Atlus doesn't innovate JRPGs. They just slow your progression by adding knowledge checks in every fight. It's boring, tedious and not engaging. Fuck off.
>>719539859I'll look into it. It's just that the PSP 1000 had a full circle charger but the later ones had little notches that prevented it from going in. Maybe this USB/USB C thing isn't so bad, fuck
>>719539514SMT/Persona isn't "deep".its just boring homework.
SMT IV literally soft locked me and I never understood why. The overworld map just stopped working and the only exit was a really high level dungeon
>>719537968>>719537030>>719537698Actually I just found out the Process Lasso fix so I might try disabling the other fixes. The other ones are unnecessary now probably except maybe Special K? I think FFXVI fix breaks if you disable core 0.

>>719540691I just started playing Wild ARMS. It's a bit easy but I like it, great presentation. >>719537991In my post I outlined Wizardry, Brandish, and Xanadu, so add those. Looking at my shelf I see some RPGs I haven't got to yet, all on Xbox 360: Blue Dragon (has a sequel on DS), Lost Odyssey, Enchanted Arms. I'd also say give the Farland Story games on PC98 a try if you want some SRPG gameplay, same with the megaten spin off Majin Tensei (I have finished the first one and loved it in spite of how slow it was at points, but it has a sequel as well). Another series you might consider checking out is Last Bible, which is another Megaten spinoff. I've only finished the first one and just thought it was just okay a little undercooked but at least short, but I hear other games in that series are better. Since I brought up Xanadu, you might also consider Legacy of the Wizard on NES, which is the localized version of Dragon Slayer IV (Xanadu is Dragon Slayer II). There's also Faxanadu on NES, but it has all the RPG elements stripped out, as leveling up only really serves to spawn you with X amount of gold on a reload via password (or save on FDS).
>>719540691>>719540949Oh how the fuck could I forget King's Field? That series rocks, it's real time first person dungeon crawling. Most of it is translated, all four of the mainline games as well as a short teaser that takes place between King's Field II and III called Pilot Style. Seriously it's only about an hour long tops. There's two more traditional dungeon crawler King's Field games called King's Field Additional I and II on PSP, but they remain untranslated. Another game that I wouldn't call great but I liked some ideas from was Minelvaton Saga on NES. Dragon Quest styled presentation and progression, but combat is top down and real time bump combat just like Xanadu. However, the game also lets you have party members, and they can attack from the side lines with bows and magic. It's not a particularly deep game but I thought it was very cool for what it was.
>>719540949I love Wild Arms. I hope the spiritual successor isn't taking the money and running like the Pennyblood devs or whatever their partner group was called.>>719537968>>719540250I spoke too soon about fixing the crashing.Anyway I found a new download of FFXVI fix from 2 months ago https://codeberg.org/Lyall/FFXVIFixI'm still figuring out how to fix this broken ass game if it's even possible
Wild ARMs 3I love the game having an opening song each time you play like an episode of an anime that changes visuals as you progress.
