If he wants to make his games hard, why doesn't he just make them more mechanically complex instead of falling back on a bunch of cheap trash like deliberately misleading attack animations, bosses that are far too big for the camera, and ridiculously long enemy combos?

Dark Souls combat is basically just Ocarina of time with a stamina bar and an i-frame dodge. Is he just scared that if he gets any more complicated than that he'll lose his audience of something?

Watch any feint in real life. It is tricking someone into thinking an attack is coming from one direction while really making it come from another. You will never see combat where some dude holds a weapon in the air for five seconds only to swing it down in exactly the manner he telegraphed five seconds ago that doesn't involve special needs participants.

Retarded attack animations that lie to the player are a cheap trick, and the devs don't even need to worry about where an attack is coming from since in ER so many attacks just have turbo tracking that makes positioning irrelevant as it is.

Except you don't know when the boss is gonna release his attack, especially since they have different variations of certain moves depending on input reading, and you can't cancel attack animations meaning you gotta play extremely passively while learning a boss
Which is the entire issue with the nu-From combat system. It's completely unintuitive and entire based on rote memorization

Why do you think other games add a ton more gimmicks compared to how mechanically simple fromsoft games are? For example every other sekiro clone has full combos, various ways to parry, maybe aerial combos and so on because its core sekiro is just mashing L1 and R1. However Fromsoft games are very popular because they are not janky and mechanically simple, initially hard but also easy to master. It makes the average casul feel like a pro gamer when it clicks.
