>EU version removed the entire storymode
That doesn't even begin to do it justice
>driver bios removed
>three cinematics every driver had removed
>lore flavor text on the loading screens removed
My personal favorite is the EU version removing the whole yellow jacket unlock sequence of shooting down a 747 and it crashing into a building while the US version had it unchanged despire the you know what from the real world.

Capcom fucking up western versions of their games in the early 2000s
>DMC1
US/EU was intentionally made harder ruining Kamiya's design
>DMC3 (OG non special edition)
normal mode was actually hard mode in US/EU thus ruining the balance as unlockables carry over in harder difficulties
>Chaos Legion
JP was too easy so they made it have damage sponge enemies and ruined the balance again, just in the other direction for the western versions
>Onimusha 4 Dawn Of Dreams
This is the biggest offender in my book.
The JP version is a phenomenal game and then Capcom decided to drastically reduce red souls(experience points) per enemy and decided to make all enemies damage sponges making the whole game tedious to play.
Instead of always upgrading your weapons and having fun blasting through stages with 5 different characters and having the intended number always going up Action RPG experience, you got a dull and repetitive bullet sponge fest with miserable progression that doesn't allow you to play with around a hundred different weapons with various different properties as the experience points were severely gutted.
Even the challenge aspect of the game was gutted as the JP version had an exclusive harder difficulty anyway, that kills you in one hit.
I wonder who was responsible for this and what was their train of thought for ruining one of Capcoms best games.
Thankfully the JP version has Eng Text and dual audio anyway so it doesn't matter now but then it effectively killed the series for 20+ years.

I honestly still get irrationally angry with this one, sure I could have accepted the removal of planes and the leaving the car burning on fire deaths, but you legit got a fucking third of a game without any story FMV cutscenes to motivate you, it wasn’t even mandated from Sony or any government was it? it was just the developers shitting themselves and over correcting I think, fucking cunts

Capcom was bizzarely paranoid about Westerners renting games, finishing them quickly, which (in Capcom’s eyes) was equivalent of a stolen copy and that person 100% would’ve bought the game for full price if they couldn’t rent it.

So they made western versions of all their games harder or occasionally more tedious, to try and make them impossible to finish in one rental session. All their games harder resident evil games are harder in America/Europe compared to Japan, RE1 was pretty drastic changes, RE2 was a lot more subtle, RE3 was somewhere in between.

I can’t remember what country it was, probably Germany, but Resident Evil 3’s mercenaries mode was censored to point of being borderline unplayable.

The gore are killing wernt censored, but “getting points” for killing Humans was not allowed. The way the game mode works is timer is ticking down, if it hits 0 you lose. You gain extra time by killing enemies. With this removed for zombies (aka 90% of enemies) the only way to increase timer was killing dogs, crows, hunters, and drain Deimos, but it was still nearly impossible to finish, and even if you did you got an awful score, because other countries could finish with like 25 minutes spare on the clock if they played well, but censored version would finish with seconds left.

I remember it helped me that every gaming magzine that covered it went out of their way to explain every numbered title is standalone so the 7 doesn't mean we have to play 6 other games first. So it wasn't such a difficult concept to grasp, this is why it leaves me completely puzzled that companies are so afraid of this that they would rather call their 5th or 6th or whatever entry just God of War with no number again for example. Now THAT shit is just confusing and makes no sense. Will never understand what's the point, all they have to do is look at Final Fantasy 7 to see how pointless this shit is.

Kill all localizers
Localizers are all evil subhuman scum, changing even one word from the original text always makes the result unreadable trash that has 0% in common with the original text. Localization should never be done, the only true form of translation is raw MTL output where no disgusting human being has had the chance to """improve""" it by making changes.
I'm not interested in whatever retarded fanfiction the subhuman localizer vomited out, I want the original puns, idioms, references, sentence structure and grammar untouched. I play Japanese games for their culture, not American politics, zoomerspeak and retarded memes.

Translations have been questionable in general but got really bad after Freedom Unite. Lots of lore implications lost in translation as well.

games like lords of shadow and shadows of the damned were ruined by western pandering publishers forcefully localizing the games during production and have a shadow cast over their legacy
lords of shadows, the protag was supposed to be very edgy to show how he becomes dracula, it was removed entirely and he remained the good honest crusader since the start of the game
shadows of the damned had to change genres so much, the developer rewrote the main guy to be a despacito clone

You follow gaming news and more or less know what new releases are about but normalfags don't so if they see God of War 6 they get intimidated, if you just call it God of War they still recognize the IP but you signal to them that it's a reboot or something or that at least they don't need to play the previous games to understand what's going on.
It's funny because to me something like Fire Emblem is infinitely more intimidating because I know the series has like 10+ mainline games and I don't want to start with the latest entry but normies have no trouble buying the latest Switch game and playing with permadeath off.

I liked the first MGS. It's still a dogshit localisation, but it's enjoyable in its own right, what with all the fun accents and stuff, and changing Mantis' final line was arguably an improvement.

That said, it fucked up MGS2 because now you can't get Meryl back to voice a Russian because you've already had a history of giving everyone accurate accents, and Kojimbo being autistic resulted in him having the game retranslated back into Japanese, which led to him severely limiting translators on the rest of his games, to their detriment. Twin Snakes is Kojimbo's attempt to "fix" the MGS1 translation (at least in part, he didn't bother having the codecs retranslated, just the major cutscenes so some lines make even LESS sense), and is filled with atrocious writing because of it.

The funniest one was Lords of the Fallen.

All media outlets, and even the devs themselves called LOTF (2023) a “reboot”, and having the exact same title as 2014 game gave that impression as well. But it’s not, it’s a full on sequel. And not even in a “if you find super hidden item it’s hints that it’s 10,000 years in the future of old game”. No, the literal first NPC you meet is the player character from LOTF (2014), and other characters even directly reference events of that game, you can even see the location 2014 game took place in the far distance of skybox.

They had such low opinion of 2014 game that they lied to everyone and said 2023 was a royal reboot and not a sequel. And now the third game has been announced as “Lords of the Fallen 2” which is going to be 3rd game in trilogy.

Came here to post this, seeing one of my favourite RTS of all time have the best part of its campaign (interesting story and worldbuilding) completely gutted including simplifying/censoring dialogue, rewriting plotlines and cutting out an entire character was heartbreaking. Basically if you've played the English version, you didn't play Perimeter. Which is a shame, since fixing it would be very easy - you just have to grab the russian xml file for the campaign dialogues, translate it into English and then simply copy & replace. Wonder if anyone bothered to do that.
That is, on top of the awful soul-removing voice acting they did.

Why did they do that?

The reason all bad shit happens, they probably just "wanted to do their own thing"

Theater Days. With Momoko, specifically.
I think there was some debate over whether it was just incompetence or if it was some feminist thing, since you know what South Koreans are like. I also think they patched it eventually, but I'm not sure. They shut down the Korean servers a very long time ago in any case.

I couldn't believe how much easier and enjoyable the JP version of this game was over the Working Designs release
>>
>>719551275
It's a little different to that. Japanese version has two choices but with two outcomes each. The first time you pick a choice you get a bad result, the second you get a good one. So you automatically get bad results for every single choice the first time you play and need to go ng+ to get a good one, and even then you have to pick the same option you picked the first time (and you unlock jobs for each choice so picking the same option means you miss out since you already have that job). If you want to see both good results then you need to play the game four times so you can pick A+A and then B+B.
Western release changed it so you get the good result from the start and don't need to pick the same option twice. Which makes it kinda boring that things always work out well, but the Japanese version also had that as long as you were willing to do it again. And had things always sucking on the first one, which is also boring.
>>
>>719544942
I played it for the first time recently and only the japanese version, I didn't like it. Still felt wrong compared to the others.
>>

>but it's not consistent for some reason, tons of anime, movies
Different rating boards and censorship standards, this isn't even exclusive to Japan, do you think a single entity oversees the content guidelines entire music, TV, movie, comic industry here in the US?

Video games in Japan have been consistently off-limits with content such as beheading for about 19 years, while dismembered limbs have some leniency; video games that abide to CERO ratings that is, unrated stuff on PC like erotic games and those gruesome RPGmaker games are free real estate.

Streets of Rage 3
Gay Panic resulted in a lot of colours being changed, a boss being removed and
For some reason
The entire story
And they made the game really hard, and you can only actually get to the final stage on hard mode

Because japs complained about having to play the game 4 times for every outcome and job.

even shmups weren't safe from localizers' fuckery. in sol divide for ps1, they cut out all endings, the save function and the whole extra RPG mode

Working Design's ruined a shit ton of games because they thought they knew better.

Also Warcraft 3's russian localization was so epic it's still memed about today.

I love how these days they're trying to sell this narrative that they were combating 30 day return policies, which I don't buy for a second. They took so many liberties with the translations alone, I bet they genuinely believed they were making the games better.
>>
>>719553698
I like the goofy translastion but they also tend to fuck up the difficulty balance
>>
>>719541119
You forgot them turning Sengoku Basara into some sort of DMC sequel and altering all references to japanese history, including character and location names. Which ended up permanently crippling the IP in the west, to the point where the base version of 3 is the only other localized entry in the series.
>>719542265
Fates got it particularly bad but the whole series is a mess when it comes to that. With the constant personality/support changes, censorship, and other crap like them omitting RD's hard mode script additions or nerfing effective damage in 7 for no reason there's just too much to mention in a single post. It's honestly a good thing that about half the series is still not officially localized.

The Japanese made Sonic the Hedgehog, a story about an animal hero who saves his friends from an evil human scientist.
Americans saw that and turned it into a Terminator resistance ripoff, and the fans jerk off to diaper pregnant sonic clones.
>>
>>719543860
The thing I really don't get about this game's localization is, is there anyone at all out there who'll play a game with this art style and yet draw the line at Japanese names like Homura or Hikari? Who was that audience those name changes were meant for?
>>
>>719541543
Didn't the GC and Xbox versions get more fixes than the PS2?
>>
>>719556476
Yes and no. Basically there's the original Auto Modellista (PS2), which only released as such in JPN/PAL, the US meanwhile got different physics to make the game harder, which every other version is based off of (US Tuned as a Japanese PS2 exclusive, GameCube, and Xbox). I don't think any of the later versions have the superior original handling, but they might have unrelated fixes in comparison to the US PS2 version.
>>
>>719555250
Eh, it's clear they tried to sell the game as something a bit more of a broad audience. XB1 had gained a lot of traction with word of mouth, shulk being in smash and XBX looking like a big budget space opera (when in truth is a 90s anime). And when you remember the wave of hype that was the switch being a new console. I can see what they tried to do and why they tried to do it.
Don't get me wrong, it's obviously not correct and is even funnier that xb2 ended up being the most 'anime' of the 4 games, but yeah, there was some logic behind it.

Not only that but Sega also removed the image of the destroyed city in the bad ending. Getting a wall of text saying millions died is nothing compared to actually seeing it.
>>
>>719565191
What's so funny here is that Sega was doing great around that time, and then suddenly made a ton of shitty decisions that ended up alienating most of their fans.
Butchering BKIII into the mess that became SOR3 really showed young me that these people did not know what they were doing anymore.
I can forgive a cigar/panty censoring here and there, but SOR3 was just a maniac with a butcher knife at work.

Polish version of Sims 2 has infamous translation with "mac & chess" getting turned into "cheeseburger". Yes, they translated a English word into another English word and make everyone scratch their head over why cheeseburger looks like some kind of soup. My guess is the translator had only raw text to work with and for some reason thought "mac" in the context is a slang term for McDonald like burger. They fixed it in some expansion. And then in Sims 3 "mac & chess" got translated into "hamburger z serem" ("hamburger with cheese") and they never fixed it.
