Somebody needs to create a new iconic fantasy race. We have been using the same tired combination of men, elves, dwarves, orcs and gnomes/hobbits for centuries now and its played out and exhausting.
>>
We need to rip off Tolkien but make it worse in every fantasy universe sorry chud
>>
Luv dwarf.

Gnomes are more fun than hobbits and I actually like when people give these races a unique spin, like WOW making the gnomes all technologically advanced

But also yeah you can do that, invent a new race, it's fun, but you have to actually popularize it within a piece of fiction, you can't just come up with it and go "alright devs, put this in your game!" write a book or something

Seems like they're really trying for the draconian/dragonkin lately. Every other high fantasy game has them.

Drow are the shortest elves.

swamp lizard people and desert cat people are the next closest to mainstream cultural fantasy races

As people said, lizardmen and catpeople are somewhat common these days.

I feel like we could use an agrarian horse/work-animal race. Strong but peaceful and simple.

Orcs and elves are fine, you don't need more than that. Fuck, you can get by with just humans. Look at Dominions: most of the races are human (and those that aren't aren't dwarves and elves, but Norse giants, or Zarathustrian birdmen or whatever) and they feel original, novel and iconic, because they aren't riffing off Tolkien (or off D&D or other works that riff off Tolkien) but instead like him go back to the source material of history and mythology. You don't have "elves" but Tuatha Dé Danann, Spanish Inquisition, etc.

Like, fuck, if a setting were to take seriously even historically very common societal structures like patronage systems, for most players it would seem completely alien, never mind the more idiosyncratic stuff like the Venetian election system or whatever. Tolkien doesn't go much into "tax policy" kind of details in his writing but he unlike subsequent authors tends to understand these sort of things: contrast "obeys and follows their deified leader" orcs of OPs picture to Tolkien, who e.g. understands what kind of forces create cohesion for militaries: consequently, the Uruk-Hai of Saruman are depicted as lacking cohesion because Saruman the tinkerer doesn't understand human (or orcish) matters and his army has none of these cohesion-building elements. And so they lack discipline and spread out to loot, rout when things go bad (while the wildmen do cohere and surrender as one group after the lost battle), etc.
>>
>>719543895
Why isn't deeja marriageable
>>
Just humans and weird fairies/fae is enough.
>>
>>719543910
Guild War (og) was great and many of the races (Tengu in factions) were just based on actual mythological creatures.
So why not brush off Oni? Or Wendigos or some such?
>>
>>719542459
You don't like the scaleshit that are D&D's dragonborn?
>>
>>719542459
Coming up with fantasy races in the past was just taking human deformities like dwarfism, gigantism, fetal alcohol syndrome, etc. and calling them their own race. What you're asking for is actual creativity, which is something even the old fantasy writers didn't have.
>>
For me, it is sword & sorcery fantasy where apemen and lizardmen were originally magically degenerated humans.

Yes, that's exactly the route for nonhuman races in Dominions, which I think is a great idea (it does have playable oni and bakemono factions, tengus are summons). Although (from what I've played and remember, which admittedly isn't that much) I think the races feel "modern" in their outlook so it doesn't go all the way.
>>
>>719543278
This image of misleading since all elves have the same body as the drow.
Especially the males.
>>
>>719544321
>>
>>719542459
Dwarves are also the best engineers, best builders, and have the biggest and most complicated wonders.
They are stupidly OP, but everyone hates them.
>>
>>719542459
>take humans, make them the jack of all trades
>every other race is just various aspects of humans taken up a notch
Is there even anything left to cover that doesn't just turn into a different flavor of X?
>elves are wise traditionalists who focus on agility and precision
>dwarves are destructive and inventive, focusing on might
>gnomes/hobits are humble, friendly simple folk who don't fight
>Orcs and co are destructive and animalistic
You got the old, the new, the good and the evil.
>>
>>719545359
Make elves objectively better than humans in every metric but gain only 60% of the EXP humans do.
Lock classes to certain races, give them different starting equipment. Like Dwarves getting early industrial weapons but no magic.
Make Orcs consume twices as many food resources on every rest.

Bring in a rare race like Naga or Harpies.
>>
Design a unique fantasy race without relying on already well-established tropes.

You literally cannot.
>>
>>719545943
Sil/Sil-Q (traditional roguelikes) did that, elf is the way game is meant to be played and playing as a human is hard mode.

Races are just another "flavor" of human that normies can't help themselves but project as allegories for real life civilizations or ethnic groups, instead of ficticious elements inspired by real life.
And anything that goes much beyond that leaves fantasy territory and enter alien/sci-fi territory, at most a race distorted by Cthullu-esque old ones.
So nothing new can be done, maybe AI will come with zany ideas.
>>
>>719542459
All the cool races added in 2e dnd like tieflings which are now flanderised by trannies and hated by reactionaries because they are newish.

The classics done right never get tired if you aren't braindead though.
>>
>>719546156
Skaven are already that honestly. You'd think they'd be some hive minded endless horde faction based on the fact that they're rats but they're actually an incredibly individualisticly minded one with a weird mix of horde tactics, mad scientist technology/monsters, and magic shamans.

Only by breaking from the humanoid form.
Something like Centaurs, Lamias or Driders with their beastly lower halves would have all sorts of complications and dramatically unique benefits for operating day-to-day that their culture and general behavior should have to be distinctly unique to account for it.

There's simply not enough evidence to condemn Easterlings as evil and fighting for Sauron out of their own volition. Is a man-at-arms evil for being levied against good men?

Majority of large IP's and studios today are owned and run by leftists that bow down to blackrock jews, leftists have no imagination or originality and jews can only leech of things that already exist like that have since the unfortunate creation of their race.
99.9% of all the cool thing that have ever existed and still exist was created by racist (mostly white) men, everything remotely popular or cool is either a new iteration or copy of said cool things. Just look at shit like Marvel; just copies of old European tales and mythology taken by a jew, twisted and corrupted into soulless, mass produced slop for the masses of souless, rootless brown people

Its impossible now. You either end up with more beast races or something freakish and ugly like what you see in Dragon Age or other modern forms of fantasy.

Subversions of tropes, customs and culture has been an ongoing trend ever since the scientific method finally outrooted organized religions from its place within society and was never able to restabilish a lot of moral guidelines that were lost with this change.
We have a lot of anti-hero and other stuff like that ever since.
Maybe we're entering the first truly reactionary moment against that faggotry since the 19th Century. "Conservatives" up until now were just delaying the inevitable.
