A remake that exists solely to have better graphics and better quality voice acting really doesn’t need to exist, and serves only to erase the actual historically significant original. REmake is the Demon’s Souls 2020 of the early 2000’s. The only gameplay change that’s interesting is crimsonheads. But they are honestly more of an annoyance, and I would like them a lot more if they were introduced in a whole new game. Plus REmake’s writing is the worst kind of bad, it’s just boring. Original RE1 is iconic for its terrible line delivery. REmake “”fixed”” the script, but it didn’t make it good, it just made it incredibly bland. There’s a reason everyone can quote 1996 but no one can remember a single line that came from REmake. Plus REmake also hurt the pacing with beginning section, and also removed a bunch of the branching paths and outcomes. There’s vast majority of people will tell you that REmake is the true version and original should be ignored. No one says this for any of the other remakes of 2, 3, or 4, REmake just released early enough that people didn’t recognise it was nostalgia bait and “look how fancy my graphics are” game. It’s not bad by any means, but I hate it on principle.Now you may be thinking I’m hypocritical for ranking RE4R and RE2R highly. But those games actually play completely differently to originals, if you’re gonna remake a game it should be actually different. My biggest complaints with RE2R and RE4R are that they are remakes. If Capcom made exact same game but gave it a new story and changed some locations/enemies a little bit RE2R would’ve been a near perfect RE8. But even as a remake no one considers it to have replaced original, wheras that’s the whole thing with REmake of first game, it’s like Capcom and fanbase are ashamed RE1 exists, and want to pretend REmake was always there.
