This has nothing to do with readability. Top looks like a primitive rendition of genuine renaissance style. Bottom looks like it's a theme park made out of cardboard.The timber frame water structures look particularly out of place. I also really love the lighting in the original Spyro and I don't get why they didn't try to replicate it since it doesn't even seem hard to do.

The same key TFB staff worked on Gigantic, and for as much as a flop as that game was, it looks closer to a modern interpretation of the original Spyro games than the remakes did.

I think it's just because everything has so much detail. A lot of games now just look like Unreal Engine garbage where even the background elements have way too much polish and detail. Before, all the background elements had simpler models and textures to save space, whilst the most important focal points, like the main character had the most detail.

I think the problem is mostly due to the games industry being in bed with the computer graphics industry. Games don't need to be CGI films.

Gaming died with 7th gen. 6th gen hits the best middle ground of readability but enough memory and storage to actually do everything you want.

That was an intentional choice to make the platforms visible even at night, you do not design the gameplay around the context but rather the context around the gameplay, Spyro isn't purple because someone decided it as an arbitrary design choice, he's purple so he would stand out against the mostly green and yellow environments

Just because you arbitrarily decided the level's environment should be night doesn't mean you should skimp out on glancability to preserve the night feeling
