he right tho
Most games don't need any percentage under 50% for any reason. Does your balancing require 13%? Drop it. Does your ability have a +3%? Delete it. its not fun.All modifiers in the entire game should be subject to this filter: Will the player, upon reading and seeing it in action, say: "Damn, this is strong as fuck"? If not, delete it.
Jblow is right, stats have gone from being a representation of mechanics to the goal themselves. We have let ourselves become slaves to numbers going up
all based devs take noteTHIS is how you gatekeep filthy journos with shit opinions from your games
i fucking LOVE number goes up games. any number grindan fans got any suggestions? love me some>balatro>nubby's>vamp survivors>diablo and its many clones>cookie clicker>starcraft>baldur's gateits the best genre
>>719550205You mix in real games with statslop, you are actually retarded.
>>719550264The only real games on there are BG and Starcraft, Diablo and ARPGs in general are patient zero for statslop>YOOOOOOOO I JUST DROPPED THE PURPLE COLORED SWORD WHICH WILL REPLACE MY GREEN COLORED SWORD, IT DOES +13.5% DAMAGE TO UNDEAD ON WEEKDAYS BETWEEN 3 AND 5 PM
>>719550264i'm not even joking, i like all those games for the same reason: numbers go up. it's satisfying whether it's some shitty roguelite indie game or watching minerals/vespene gas go up in starcraft and watching my zealot and goon count skyrocket
With each year he becomes progressively more unhinged. And I'm mclovin' it.Godspeed, Mr. Blow.
>>719550459A good job indeed from Mr. Blow.
>>719550205Balatro has Xmult effects, statslop means spamming irrelevant +5% buffs>>719550413Starcraft is not statslop WTF? RTS games in general are the complete opposite with their fixed units
>>719550413Statslop owns. I love statslop. I’m in an ENM relationship so I can roll for new partners with my partner.
>>719550656with his game examples starcraft is stat slop, the king is watching has literally no multipliers or anything
>>719550005What about if my game is tracking characters' bladder percentages?
I love precisely manipulating small percentages and seeing it all work and I am not joking.

>>719551414i played starcraft since 1998 nigga, you're really considering rtses to be "numbers go up" games because of a fucking +3 to infantry armour? you're putting +3 to armour in the same bag with cookie clicker? really nigga?
>>719549621is this guy actually retarded?
>>719550109I miss when shit like +1 damage actually being gamechanging
>>719551414I know this is bait, but the other retards who are too young to have played SC might think it's true.those upgrades to damage or armour completely change matchups, especially in the early game when unit counts are low.
>>719549621Man this guy is a real fuckin' loser.
>>719549621This statement, brought you by the creator of The Witness, the game that introduced the exact same concept for the escalation of its puzzle solving mechanics.
>>719550205Just play Antimatter Dimensions
>>719551582those are some sexy numbers though. your marines doing +1 damage on top of a base of 6 is a euphoric experience. now factor in the double attack speed from stim pack, all while the rate of marine production goes up as you make more SCVs and more command centers dominating an ever greater number of mineral fields. and this is all while your missile turrets and supply depots blanket every other buildable tile, giving you absolute control of the map (i.e. the numerical percentage of map control is increasingly going in your favor). these numbers aren't just good, they are objectively more interesting to watch go up than games like cookie clicker and diablo 2 because they feel so much more significant

>>719549621Blow hasn't made a game in a decade and he was considered a retard before that.
>>719550005From a gamedev's standpoint. Let's say you gain +5% to health regen per turn. How do we even conflate this? Shoud it mean you regen 5% more health per turn, or it's a +5% bonus to existing 1% health regen, turning it into 1.05% regen. Making +5% in the former more like 600% improvementI think this is the issue with stats adding multiplicatively rather than additively. It makes the whole thing easier to balance since the developer can consider something like +5% as a literal +5% stat improvement, but something that add 5% additively is much more harder to balance since you must also consider how much stats the player have comparative to their progression in the game.
>>719549621>all the percentages have three zeroes after the decimal...
>>719551414>Increases marine attack range by 1 (to 5)That's a 25% increase. Quite the far cry from the "+0.5% poison damage" of the average statslop.

StatSlop can be fun anon
>>719549621He's kinda right when it comes to games that with bonuses like:>Do +0.534% poison damage for 2.521 seconds on tuesday under a full moonBut I didn't really get that from the game he posted
>>719549621I love numbers go up games but he's right, having to sit and sort through hundreds of "+1% chance to stun troll enemies if poisoned status is applied" modifiers is tedious. Also these games are often poorly balanced, partially because you can't test everything, so you find that one item and combo that wrecks everything and then the rest of game is not fun to play at all.
>>719552485unironically based
I've been calling them NLslop
>>719549621>The King is Watching>Statslopwhat, game barely has any stats to begin with, you only have resources and most descriptions are so basic like "increase damage of gnomes"

>>719549768I assume the 10% buffs to unit health overwhelmed his fragile brain.
>>719549621>this is [thing I don't like]slop!Very interesting opinion from someone who released a very mediocre remaster.
>>719549621I'm honestly more offended by the upscaling algorithm in that zomeed in screenshot, it looks like fucking 2xSaI or super eagle running on zsnes lolJust why?
>>719550205kitten game is the "dark souls of idle game" aka finishing the game can take up several months of grindingbut what's fun is that it always open up new mechanics etc, new milestone always come with something new, play it blind just for the discoveryit's free and an excellent time waster, i'd advocate for the script that auto-hunt and auto-scrolls though, that is fucking tedious
>>719549621Damn, he still hasn't got over the Soulja Boy incident?
>>719552912if you're sitting and sorting through a bunch of numbers like that you're doing it wrong. you can just intuit what each stat boost will do and play the game, at least in most strategy games and what op posted. I once heard a pro aoe player with thousands of hours in the game say he has no idea how much an archer costs or how much hp it has. he just remembers roughly how many villagers on food and wood it takes to continuously make them and roughly how many hits they can take at each upgrade level, etc
>>719551923baffling post
>>719554556Do strategy games even have those modifiers outside of permanent upgrades? I find RTS games pretty straightforward, it's western RPGs and games like nu-God of War that do the thing where they give you a bunch of +1% items and if you want to optimize your build, especially for super bosses you have to engage with it.
>>719549713>autism gamesvirtually every game has to employ rpg elements now, every Metroidvania, every Action game and generally every open world game
>>719549621What?But King is Watching is literally nothing like that? Not even a little bit.The only thing I can imagine is this guy wondering why he can't finish the game using only literal peasants.

>>719549712he didn't make a great pointit wasn't even decent
>>719550005Shit idea. This means if you don't take the literal optimal path you're missing many times the damage.Small increments allow for LESS need to be perfect, making for far better balancing.
>>719551692Obviously.He's using twitter.
>>719555274
This is why Pokémon is goated, you focus less on numbers and more on general typing and moveset.
For once he's kind of right. Shit like this is what killed Diablo 4 on launch.
>>719555123some newer city builders and rts lean into it a little bit more but its still manageable. the point is even with a little bloat you can still focus more on decision making and the broader picture. I haven't really played western rpgs like you described but that sounds terrible.

>>719549621>statslopA fitting name for these piece of shit games.I'm gonna use it from now on.
Keeping numbers low and giving items unique abilities is more interesting. This is why even a green item might be better for your build than a purple one in BG3. I know a lot of people shit on 5e, I never played DnD, but I'm talking about purely from a gameplay perspective, lower numbers are better.I feel like Chrono Trigger had that in a JRPG sense. People talk about how it's overrated and such, but the fact that max health is 999 instead of 9999 makes a big difference and there aren't items and stat that give you +5% crit chance, when you get the Rainbow Sword it's an immediate 70% chance, the point is that the fucking weapon crits a lot, it's not a minor boost.Lower numbers, higher percentages or unique, noticeable abilities is the way.
>>719556545>start new game>character is equipped with a wooden spoon>do normal attack>7091 damage
>>719555350who said anything aobut optimal path. Have multiple paths for multiple builds. Just dont spread em out over 100 nodes of +0.5% dps vs undead.
>>719549621I recognize the game on the right, I guess I will play it since Jonathan Blow hates it and he hates Elden Ring and I liked itAre there any other games Jonathan Blow hates?
>>719556545Better gameplay, harder balance (if 10 is a big hit then the minimum you can change is 10%), but it is the standard to aim for, hopefully things change
>>719549621Nioh II was basically this, gameplay was fun but itemization felt like absolute shit with all the tiny percentage increases.
>>719556545I think it's more about knowing what the implications of a system are. Idle games are the ultimate incarnation of statslop and they're genuinely fun experiences (or, at least, they tap into something primal in the human brain). They break down at the point that the difference in stats isn't meaningful or intelligible to the playerUnique effects have more potential to be interesting and create more varied experiences, but they're also harder to meaningfully balance without at least a layer of engaging with the stats. TBoI has a ton of unique effects, but most of them are also paired with some kind of modification to the player's stats as well to create tradeoffs. If your game has something like vampirism or poison or conditional invincibility in it there's a 99% chance that bricks the difficulty with the right build unless you do some bullshit like making enemies immune

That guy made one game that was only getting praise because the whole clique of indie game losers sucked it off. That game had a main character that looked like he's dying from gay cancer.
>>719554095>kitten game is the "dark souls of idle game" aka finishing the game can take up several months of grindingitrtg challenges can take months to max, per challenge.
