Once this game's story is absolutely done for and enters maintenance mode, the game will die.There is literally nothing holding these game's horribly flawed mechanics and design together besides the MSQ, that's the entire reason everyone still cares about this game, FF14 has one of the least sustainable long term plans ive ever seen in a game. You won't see people coming back to this game the same way you see people going back to WOW, Runescape, FF11 etc in 10 years or so because the gameplay is simply not good, and when that time comes the community will probably just bend over and accept that the game where they wasted time and money for the last 20 or so years is over and done for, for good.
