I remember briefly trying this, getting it set up on my modern machine, I think I did the tutorial and first level or something. Never got into it

It's time to give deuSex1 another go

Here's the big question though: how do I make this an enjoyable experience in 2025, how do I have fun?
>>
try not being a zoomer

Install the malkavian mod

I was in the same boat. Played it, deleted it, and reinstalled after feeling I was missing something. It started clicking one I got to New York.

Try GMDX or Revision.

change the controls to make them normal, max out pistol points. find the laser mod in the first level, equip it and turn it on.
>>

>Don't use any mods except for fan patches
>Understand that the game wants you to experiment
>Save often
>Pick the GEP Gun and blow shit up
>Don't put any points into swimming
These are for your first run. Afterwards, do whatever the fuck you like.

I was surprised when playing how swimming wasn't a meme. The vast majority of levels do have water somewhere
The real meme is Medical Training since the regen aug makes it redundant
>>
>>719556804
dont play revision it's garbage and makes the game worse

Get the kentie launcher + Transcended

>Here's the big question though: how do I make this an enjoyable experience in 2025
It's already an enjoyable game. Just install the mandatory compatibility stuff. I think the recommendation is still Kentie's launcher aka. Deus Exe, plus possibly the DX10 renderer.
https://kentie.net/article/dxguide/index.htm
https://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/index.htm

Leave the actual gameplay mods for subsequent playthroughs if you end up liking the game. This goes equally for Revision, GMDX and even the supposedly vanilla-adjacent ones like Transcended.

I played a few hours of it and the stealth mechanics and sound design were really bad. And it came out -after- Thief and System Shock 2, which is kinda embarrassing.
>>
>>719562427
You must've played it wrong, you're supposed to silently eliminate everyone with the GEP gun.
>>
>>719562545

>>
>>719562427
That's an unfair comparison, Thief's sound design and stealth mechanics are top of the class even today even if the AI doesn't hold up. Deus Ex isn't a pure stealth game even if it's a viable approach in most cases. Hell, one of the first things you're told is that your orders are to shoot on sight.

There's a lot of builds and gameplay styles that work really well, that's one of the reasons people keep replaying this game. It's pretty hard to accidentally fuck up your build to the point where you feel like you've gimped yourself.
But if you want some tips then
Pistol remains extremely useful throughout the game, and since it only takes 1 inventory slot it's usually considered the best primary weapon.
You'll get a ridiculous melee weapon about 1/3 into the game, so investing in low-tech is somewhat pointless
Take the GEP gun at the start, it's your universal problem solver even if you don't invest any points in heavy.
Taking at least one level in computers means you don't have to care about passwords, ever.
There are also some exploits that will make your life easier.
Installing a laser sight makes a weapon 100% accurate regardless of skill level, UNLESS you also install a scope on it. Very useful for pistols.
In character creation, you start with the pistol skill at trained. If you downgrade it and start the game you keep the refunded points but the game still defaults to trained, so it's free points.
>>
>>719558837
It is a meme in that while there are underwater sections you really don't need the swimming skill for them.

>>
>>719564221
everything in the game is good, especially the soundtrack, cyberpunk should have copied it
>>
>>719564241
I mean you don't really need to invest in anything ever, Deus Ex is one of those game where they accounted for every build by making the game so easy that your build is irrelevant
It's a matter of putting points into what you think will be most convenient

>>719563193
No, deus ex is unreal engine, while ss2 uses thief engine.
>>
swimming is actually very useful in deus ex
if you want to do any underwater exploring, it makes it so much faster
and then there's the entire ocean lab level which is an ache and a half without being able to move beyond a slow walk in all the water
it might not be as useful if theres a patch that lets legs augment affect swim speed but i don't have it
the other good part about it is how little points it requires, you can easily apply 3 levels and not really feel too bad about it

i recently tried experimenting with taking environmental training skill and the items you get are extremely powerful. tons of damage reduction, up to 50 seconds of total invisibility, and i suppose the hazmat and rebreather are kind of useful
combining these items with the augs makes you even more unstoppable, although i think they are also mostly pointless since the game is quite easy past a certain point
still, there's a lot of different builds that are pretty good, love this game
>>
>>719564639
>idk why more games dont do stuff like optional files/articles on computers or hacking, I guess devs are just lazier.
More like the whole game dev landscape has changed. Back in the day anyone in the team could add something they thought was interesting or funny into a game. Today, adding things of your own would be seen as a waste of company time at best, grounds for firing and a lawsuit at worst. The code monkey isn't supposed to add things he's not told to add.
Therefore all of those optional files and articles would require a writer, and a writer costs money.

Not just your machine, it's a problem with the renderer. If you want to give Dude Sex a shot again, you're going to NEED the Map Fix, Kentie's Launcher, and either the D9 renderer or the OpenGL renderer. OpenGL causes tearing for me, so I use D9.

No, it's a Windows problem. A lot of old games implemented their brightness settings by changing the system-wide gamma value but modern Windows doesn't let you do that anymore. It's not a bug, it's just Windows not being good enough at backwards compatibility.

Actually based, environmental is extremely slept on.

i liked revision and my friend who wasnt into the vanilla game was able to get through it too. maybe give it a go since its free on steam.

How do people not know about pcgamingwiki yet? Every game on there documents all the relevant fixes while keeping a game vanilla.

max environmental ballistic armor is like 90% damage resist AND it stacks with ballistic protection.
It's incredibly useful for a more combat oriented playthrough
>>

more a question of the rpg choices etc but thanks anyway

What does the year have to do with that? The game plays the exact same way as the year it came out except for some of the shitty balance changes the GOTY edition used.

Wut. You just need the laser mod and that's it. Nothing else matters for Pistol points

If you put points into pistol the stealth pistol becomes an amazing run and gun weapon ironically

In terms of gameplay, yes.

>In terms of gameplay, yes.
no, because there are advancements in game design, in gameplay, that make older stuff seem outdated.
this would deserve its own thread
>>
>>719580015
I disagree. A game plays the exact same way it did as the day it comes out. You might have different expectations but the game will always be the same. Just like how special effects in movies and graphics don't age. Your expectations have. Game design does not "advance", only what people consider to be normal.
Something as simple as a way a camera controls can differ from game to game, but typically the game would be designed around whatever the controls were. And if they didn't, it is not something "of the times", it was a failing of design at the time.

Yeah it's 87.50%. But it goes further than that, damage in Deus Ex is applied in integers, floored down. That makes armor extremely good against assault rifle and shotguns that only have 3-5 points of base damage. On lower difficulties you'll be almost invulnerable to them with ballistic armor alone. Even on realistic you'll only take a few points of damage.

If you can stand jank and are already determined to play those janky games, you might as well go full Looking Glass:

Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri.

The game that was so ambitious that it almost crashed the company behind Thief, before they made Thief.

Jedi Knight 2 is early 2000s but it's fucking great.
Dungeon Keeper if you want an RTS base builder with a rare FPS blend, in how you can freely possess any of your units and play as them to just rip shit up.
Battlezone from 1998, also a rare genre mix of the same vein, but this one leans the other way towards an FPS focus. Really cool cold war space race setting. If you play as the Soviets your commander is the most snide and evil guy ever lol.

Extra exploration points, alternative paths for some areas, free aug upgrade canister in Hong Kong, another one hidden much better in Vandenberg tunnels. And then just general trash. It's a useful upgrade to have at level 1-2, and I like how mods turn it into athletics perk, combining it with walking/running skills and mantling
>>
>>719577505
I liked revision too, but I felt like it's half done. There some maps that should've been expanded too. Hell why not go all in and get more combat/puzzle scenarios. It's still plays like original game, so you never really see anything new when trying it after playing original.
I just want to re-experience deus ex anons, and also much harder endgame. By Paris things get too fuckin easy with all the augs and gep guns
>>
>>719556804
Play thief 1+2 first. Dark engine is fuckin' weird, but thief will get you used to it.

Only play thief on expert mode, savescumming is ok if you're a newbie.

as a zoomer myself I bounced off it a few times. on the first playthrough. the first level sucks. it really does. I appreciated it the next few times i did it but man.. get past the first level.

dont mod it too much - use a stealth focused build like pistol / melee or avoiding guards altogether. game plays better this way. of course dont reload like a cuck if you get caught its part of the fun adapting but straight up firefights ARE ass. I really wish i could experience the game again fresh even with the terrible graphics. even those grew on me - the graphics are so shit my brain started filling in the blanks and it felt like when you're daydreaming random stuff with imagination.

at least get to new york. I started to really get into the game when you get to hong kong. im reinstalling.

>A complete overhaul of Hacking mechanics. Now, cameras and turrets will "reboot" after some time (usually a few minutes, dependent on Hacking skill), giving you good reasons to use multitools on some cameras, and making hacking less overpowered and ubiquitous as a "fix all" solution. It also makes your trip back from the Ocean lab a little more interesting...
>To remedy this, many passive (and a few active) augmentations have been converted to "Toggled" augmentations. When activated, Toggled augmentations will "reserve" a portion of your energy pool, making it unusable to anything else. So for instance, if you have a total of 100 maximum bioelectrical energy, and you activate a Toggle augmentation that reserves 20 energy, your maximum bioelectrical energy will become 80.
these changes sound really retarded. no fucking clue why you would put path of exile/titan quest mana reservation into god damn deus ex, and the hacking change is just being an anal balancing autist

trying to continue my save on a different PC, moving from W10 desktop to W11 laptop, and I think W11 fucked Documents, which is where Deus Ex keeps its saves weirdly. Anyone else by chance know how to get it working?

Yeah hacking wasn't overpowered in the first place, there's only a handful of times where you can straight up disable security
the only problem I have with hacking is that hacking ATMs is basically the only consistent way to earn money in the game. Not that you even use money all that much, but that just shows how underdeveloped that aspect of the game is
>>
>>719582137
This is 00s so im cheating but you have to play bloodlines (and arcanim if you can stomach isometric) after deus ex and thief

Funny as hell, the game doesn't even explain how hacking ATMs works. Even if you max out computers you'll still have to find credentials in datacubes to get the most credits.

>want to play deus ex again
>know every secret
>laser mod pretty much makes the game ggez until the end no matter the difficulty
>anything else besides pistol and laser is deliberately gimping yourself to where it isn't fun
>best case is to try and be stealthy as possible without save scumming
>revision is k and gmdx is shit. biomod and shifter aren't even finished and it shows
Is this what it feels like to have made it financially? That moment where you've done it all and now need something to try and entertain you differently?

I would unironically like a remaster with modern graphics. Maybe the same for the voice actors but I'm iffy.
>inb4 purist reeeing
The game is small enough to where it could be done and the biggest thing is to just keep the environments immersive enough.
>>
>>719589548 you’d think and weirdly even though there is a game>save file, the saves are actually on PC>Documents>DeusEx, at least on my W10 pc. I copied the saves to continue the save on my laptop but Documents is apparently cloud now.
>>
>>719557585
It sucks but besides computers and rifles you only need one point in each skill. Though you can probably skip environmental.
>>
>>719562772
Deus Ex is cool in that it hits the sweet spot where basically none of the augs or skills are required but at the same time they don't feel pointless.
>>
>>719596637
I'm on a similar thing and been thinking of doing specific build runs. Making up my own challenge because Realistic is too stupid and Hard gets too easy in endgame. Stealth only, no savescum challenge etc etc
>>
>>719596637
If someone was competent enough to make a "good" Deus Ex remake, they would be competent enough to just make a good new Deus Ex game. There's no excuse for remakeslop.

>>719598865
11/10 until you finish Hong Kong. Then it turns into a 4/10.
