A lot of those were just replays, and in the case of mountain blades and soulstorm they were also modded.
Something like that I guess. Some of the games were fun for a while, but nothing new I played this year felt fantastic or substantial.

Been marathoning mainline and now I'm on 5. I'm hard debating if I should continue on Newborn or Reborn. I want to keep things authentic as I did all the SMT games "fresh" but V is my most recent and I have my save and I kinda wanna continue from it to get all the endings but at the same time reborn will feel too unga and newborn I'll get a little salty losing most of my progress.

I didnt hate it I just got burned out. Im on chapter 3 and every mission is still super hand holdy while also being really long. Ive been told it lets up later on but I preferred how more free form troubleshooters was in character building and gameplay. Also stealth sections in a TBS are straight fucking ass.

Are you playing on Challenge+? For me Troubleshooter was absolutely trivial even with all the hard settings, but RC made me really annoyed at some points.

I kicked troubleshooters up to max difficulty + all mods shortly after starlight junction.

I think why I dislike it is because the game feels mean, like the player is some kind of enemy of the developer who needs to be crushed. Stealth mission? Yeah buddy there are 30 random snipers in every tree line. Story mission? Yeah buddy unless you already know enemy spawns its a miserable slog with squad spawn jumpscares. Puzzle missions? Yup if you choose the wrong choice in a binary A or B option the mission is now unbeatable.

Its a game that wants to punish the fuck out of the player unless you already have knowledge of how missions play out. The kind of game thats only tolerable when you save scum because each mission is also long as fuck so restarting a level is flushing 40 minutes of play time down the drain.

Again Ive been told that the game significantly improves when the devs go hands off and let you play in sandbox style missions where you can choose how you want to play the mission. But for now I'm 10 hours in and every mission is both extremely punishing and extremely linear so Im just burned out.

This is the interesting part, you know that feeling in games when it feels fucking brutal, but you somehow make it through on your first attempt without save scumming? I really like the feeling, and this is how half of the game felt to me. And the other half was boring stealth missions (which were harder than they needed to be, because there was no missclick confirmation on release) and too easy/too hard missions FUCK YOU PRE-NERF MIDNIGHT STRATAGEM

I played the game on release, but iirc they nerfed stealth missions pretty quickly and very hard, makes you wonder why they didn't just implement "story mode" for those, where you watch cutscenes of your units doing the mission, it's all static anyway.

Sometimes true, but most of the time it's by design that you're supposed to manage your resources so you can deal with contingency.

It's the other way around, the game becomes boring and easy on any difficulty once you know how it plays out. That's why I never gonna replay it.

At what chapter/mission you are? I'd say it goes like this:
Chapter 1 - Simplistic but fun
Chapter 2 - More tools, but still kinda straightforward
Chapter 3 - Peak difficulty, you don't have all the OP shit yet
Chapter 4 - You unlock OP abilities/items that trivialize the game EXCLUDING MIDNIGHT STRATAGEM
Chapter 5 - Difficulty all over the place, but expect one or two hard missions
