Been starting to get into Castlevania games due to the Konami collections and I wanted to ask: Which Castlevania games are the best in your opinion?
>>
>>719602204
1, Rondo, and x68000 (a.k.a. Chronicles).
>>
>>719602204
In no particular order my favorites are
Castlevania
IV
Bloodlines
Rondo
Aria
SOTN
To a much lesser extent I also like COTM, portrait and eclessia. The haunted castle remake was pretty good too but waaaay too easy. Haven't played chronicles but I hear its good. The rest I either haven't played or only beat once and didn't really care for them.

Classic-styled Castlevanias:
Castlevania (NES)
Super Castlevania IV (SNES)
Castlevania Rebirth (Wiiware)

Metroid-styled Castlevanias:
Aria of Sorrow (GBA)
Dawn of Sorrow (DS)
Portrait of Ruin (DS)
Order of Ecclesia (DS)

Symphony of the Night is worth a playthrough too (PS1, might be better on the Saturn at this point though), even if it's got weaker gameplay, it's got top tier visuals and music.
>>
I like playing 3 and 1.
>>
All of them
3, Rondo, Symphony and Aria are the fan favorites, Personally I liked Portrait even more.
>>
>>719602204
Bloodlines, Rondo, Symphony
>>
>>719602204
Bloodlines > CV3 > CV1 > SCIV > Rondo
>>
Symphony of the Night, Super Castlevania IV, and Aria of Sorrow
Rondo/X is also very good
>>
>>719602204
>Which Castlevania games are the best
Don't worry about that. Just start with 1 and 3.
>>
>>719602204
I think my personal favorites would include X6800, Bloodlines, Curse of Darkness, and Portrait of Ruin. I think my preferences shift around but I do like X6800 and Curse of Darkness a lot.
>>
>>719602204
CotM
>>
3 is kinda good, especially with the top tier music and switching characters idea, but it's not that good

but if you're gonna play it, play the japanese version, US version is bullshit (and has worse music, but it's still good music)
>>
>>719602204
All of them
>>
>>719602204
unpopular opinion? super castlevania 4 is my favorite
>>
>>719603816
it is top tier music
>>
even though sotn and games like it are really good they're not real castlevania games
>>
Dracula's Curse is an amazing OG Castlevania
>>
>>719602204
technically you should just play them all and chose your own favorite
>>
>>719603816
American 3 is perfectly fine, and it has the cool cheat codes like starting off the second quest, or starting with any partner.
>>
>>719603858
It's kinda crazy how discourse on this game has turned in more recent years, back during 5th/6th gen online it wasn't uncommon to see it on people's video game GOAT lists. People dickrode Treasure pretty hard at the time, though.
>>
Castlevania is one of those funny series that has a pretty tight consensus on which games are the best, so I really have nothing to add in that regard. What I will say is the first game definitely should not be skipped (even if you don't start with that one) because it has aged incredibly well. My first reaction to DS/Bloodborne gameplay was
>Oh, it's like Castlevania 1 in 3D.
The mechanics are tuned so that you have to put deliberate thought into every action and get punished for hasty wild reactions. That's less the case in the Metroidvanias, but the Classicvanias are very much about learning the rhythm of the levels and staying in a certain groove.

I'm more of a Classicvania fan but I like most games in the series. I think the most "essential" games are the original, IV, and SotN.
>>
>>719603956
I played through SOTN for the first time over the summer and while the music and visuals are top-tier, the gameplay was definitely lacking. subsequent games in the metroidvania genre definitely do the whole formula better.
>>
>>719604856
Journalists will dickride Treasure until the end of time.

Try talking about shooters without hearing about how much they love Ikaruga or Radiant Silvergun.
>>
>>719602204
The original mogs all others.
>>
obligatory "Dracula X for SNES is actually good" post
>>
>>719602204
The NES trilogy is good but the 16 bit ones are where they peaked:
-Belmont's Revenge
-Super
-Bloodlines
-The x68k one (can't remember its name)
-Rondo.

SOTN is really good too but def falls apart in the later hours coz the director/producer/programmer left and the gimp retard assistant (igarashi) had to take over.

None of the others beyond that are worth playing.
>>
>>719605773
Ikargua and RSG are outstanding games though. The genre never progressed beyond the games of Hiroshi Iuchi.
>>
>>719605652
The music is the only consistent thing about SOTN
>>
>>719604843
>American 3 is perfectly fine
absolutely not
>>
>>719602204
Sex with Maria
>>
>>719606136
The difficulty difference is miniscule to those who can actually beat either.
>>
>>719605874
It is though. If people would stop comparing it to Rondo so much they might actually enjoy it. It's a better game than Castlevania 4
>>
>>719605536
I can get behind this list but I'd swap 1 and 4, and Rondo for Bloodlines
>>
>>719602526
Superb taste

Trvke: the original games (never played later ones) are incredibly overrated. Attacking takes an hour, everything looks like puke, you're constantly falling off of shit, and there's no control of your character in the air. Enjoy getting constantly instakilled by birds knocking you into pits.

Do people really find IV "too easy"? I find it easier then CVIII but never felt like it was ever easy to the point of boredom. My only serious issue with IV is the Dracula fight, set up is 11 out of 10 but the actual fight feels too short with no second phase.
>>
>>719606790
oh I wasn't baiting, I agree with you
>>
>>719607195
I dont get it either
Rondo was wayyyy easier than IV but for some reason it isnt known as "the easy one"
>>
>>719602820
Same
>>

your shits all fucked up

CV3 (USA) is the best one.
