I don't care what anyone says. This is my favorite entry. I recognize the combat is nonexistent and there's a lot of backtracking, but the puzzles were top notch, and they leaned more on the story.

Darktide, easily. Combat has never felt this good.

I wanted to get into the first game but the combat and puzzles are too sluggish for me.
>>
>>719619717
The combat was goofy at best in 1, and in 2, it's mostly skippable or just something you do. The puzzles in 1 were all box puzzles, and a lot of them. I hated them so much. There's also not a lot of story, since they had to cram it on one CD. 2 has more varied puzzles (wind and light based in one section, carrying blood to basins top open invisible walkways in another, etc) and there's a lot of story in it.

So what's this game about? From screenshots I guess it's a top down shooter. Not gonna lie the cover caught my eye a couple times since the protagonist looks like combination of Boba Fett and stormtrooper but I've never looked further into it.

Large worldwide corporate government vs. rebellion. You play as a former elite soldier of the corporate entity turned rebel because they wiped out your squad and tried to kill you. You blow shit up in revenge. The controls filter most people, but if you can learn them it's worth playing.

From what I remember you can choose between relative and absolute. Relative is tank controls while absolute you press a direction and he faces that direction. Tank controls are preferable because you can do a side roll around a corner and start blasting then roll back around the corner.

This game such a 10/10 for me that I'm making a very similar game inspired by it, EA is never going to use the IP ever again anyway. I'll just change things up enough to be legally distinct and update the gameplay to modern standards
>>719620245
Fun fact the silencer was made red to stand out more easily in the environment, the artist was well aware of the boba fett similarities even in 1996 as people kept telling her he was a red boba fett.
The game runs on the engine of ultima 8 (I think) but instead of an RPG is full action, it's hampered by outdated tank controls but it also did a lot of complex thing for 1996 like the world actually being 3D and rendered in 2D isometric, almost every prop is destroyable, a lot of interactable devices like switches, elevators, computers, doors, etc. There's a reason it's my favorite game duology ever

yeah crusader no regret was made about one year later, it's slightly shorter but adds a lot of new tech, my only gripe is that in later levels it leans too much into having a trap every few steps, maybe it was done in order to lengthen play time and make shorter maps, I'm not sure

I'm still working on the solid gameplay part, it's hard to get it right, I'm still having trouble with figuring out a good way to do movement, another hard part is balancing weapons powerups, etc.

There's a demo from a few weeks ago on my itch https://maddoscientisto.itch.io/cirno-no-reason

>>719621103
Not really a genetically enhanced solider, but they do have some rocking armor and eventually can hold an energy pack that powers a force field around them and can be used for energy weapons as well. I generally stick with ballistics while strutting around with a full shield.

Thanks! I've often imagined how Crusader would work in modern day. One part of me says keep the old controls, because they work! The other says that for the perspective, and for convenience, twin stick shooter. The latter would certainly make it more accessible, but then how does it be something different than other twin sticks in recent years, like Enter the Gungeon?

OG Crusader had light immersion sim elements, like the tools, cameras, interacting with terminals. Maybe the answer is to lean into that aspect? Without it becoming the stop and go party that No Regret's final third is?

I'm struggling with motivation irl too, ironically.

the way it works ingame is that every time you die you lose 100% motivation and you game over if you have none left, killing stuff lets you build motivation, but I might change it because it doesn't feel skill based enough, health and shields and medkits make it too hard to die and killing enemies doesn't feel rewarding enough. In the original crusader most of the difficulty came from the tank controls not allowing you to move out of the way of the hitscan enemies easily, you always had to tank some hits even if you're a pro at rolling so you're on a constant downward curve with your resources. Since all my bullets are dodgeable the downard curve is reduced way too much.
One option could be removing the shield and using it only as battery for energy weapons and greatly reducing health to max two hits in order to lean on the motivation system more.
The health/shield system really doesn't work if enemies don't do forced hitscan damage.

I actually implemented an extensive interaction system, I already have switches, doors, elevators, cameras, alarms, traps, turrets, etc but since every enemy projectile is a dodgeable ball everything runs in the above issues

I've been planning to make a set of Silencer armor for a while and i think i am almost finished with the helmet, but i am really stumped upon making the rest of it.
Has any concept art or full body render of the silencer ever been published?

I might speak too soon since I'm playing it right now and I haven't finished it, but I really like the presentation of this game. Might even get the original comic trilogy.

I am not even joking. The retarded controls are what i genuinely consider a core part of these games
>>

I think I have a full body render off some art cds that came from origin studios and were posted online, let me look for it real quick
>>
>>719621696
you aren't even wrong, it changes the feeling considerably.
If I were to implement tank controls I'd at least try to do something like the leaked crusader 2 psx alpha and add buttons to strafe and make turning much easier
>>
>>719621596
>you're getting hit, even if you're a pro at rolling
the Alt+arrowkey sidestep is deceptively useful in Crusader. And on the hardest difficulty, hitting Z to center the screen is almost like cheating.

Your game flows at a different pace though, so likewise it would demand smoother movement options. Rolling in any direction for a few invis frames?

Also, have you considered more wide open areas, where the camera can pull back to reveal arenas worth of enemies? That would keep it from just being corridor-room-corridor.
>>
>>719615561

By the way this was a full color render of a concept enemy for Crusader 2, it was shown in monochrome on the official guide but I found it in an old dumped art backup disk from origin systems.
There are tons of art source files that cannot be opened because they were meant to be used on macs from 1995, it's all TGA and EPS files that barely work, only some of the TGA files can actually be viewed on windows

I played both with keyboard only on weekend warrior. It'll probably be better to play together with mouse, providing you'll rebind movement keys in dosbox mapper to wasd to make them close to other keys, like inventory, etc.

Lowkey cheating for a game like this. Same as with Fallout - the developers didn't design maps with high resolutions in mind, using them makes you see much more than you're supposed to.
