Why haven't you gotten a Steam Deck yet?
>>719623371Is Deck a full blown PC or is it limited in any way compared to a custom-built PC?
>>719623371Because I know I'd end up using it for 5 minutes, immediately think to myself "this is stupid", and walk 5 steps to my pc
>>719623745It's a full blown PC with a console-like frontend for convenience and instantaneous sleep/resume. Basically the best of both worlds.
I got an OLED one second hand off ebay and it's genuinely one of the best gaming things ive bought. It help that i travel a lot on international flights so i get to use it, but even at home ive been using it more than the PC for gaming. For example, i started playing Wuchang on pc (pirated ofc) and at some point i said fuck it this would be much better with a controler so i moved the whole installation folder and save files to the deck and just carried on there.
>>719623371I got the 1994 Jurassic Park arcade game working on it not too long ago. Figuring out which version of MAME could run it was kind of a pain, but its neat to be able to play it again.
That frame generation whatever-the-fuck utility thing is like magic. The amount of games that I was hardware-locked out of on the Deck I can now run seamlessly at 60-90FPS,.Madness.
I got an ROG Ally instead because I'm a sucker for unmaintained legacy software and most things just werk inside Windows.
I have my own solution, thank you...
Why do I need another pc?
>>719623371I don't really need one. I don't really game on handhelds much anymore and I'd rather just use my PC.
>>719623371I'm poor. Soon enough though.
I have PC.
>>719623371I have dozens and dozens of other games i havent played yet on different consoles including handheldsI would like one and i can easily afford it but id rather wait until we get something closer to a switch lite in size even if it means less performance
>>719623371Sometimes the steam and the three dots buttons don't work, and the right pad starts pressing by itself, what should i do?I have the oled one
>>719623745It's just a PC
>>719623371I have a pc and a android phone
>>719624791RMA while it's still possible for you.
>>719624791Those are just Linux quirks. While every update fixes something it also breaks something else. The search function in my file browser stopped working a few months ago for example.
Maybe when Steam Deck 2 comes out. Sounds comfy just to lay on my bed and play shitty indie games
>>719624985This is true, and I use Linux. Just about once a month I have to figure out why one of my basic functions has stopped working temporarily, having changed no configurations. Updates that are supposed to leave configs alone often don't and reset any minor tweaks I've done in programs, too. It's a constant battle when it comes to updating, but you get quicker with fixes once you've learned what's happening.
>>719625147i use debian and this hasnt happened to me even once over years
>>719625170This is what literally every Debian user claims, but they forget we can check their forums and see it happens all the same.
>>719625272it hasnt happened to me
I got mine, and I will be buying the Deck 2.
>>719625424cult.
>>719623842Thought the same until I got one for shits and giggles. Now I use it to game way more than my desktop.
>>719624791RMA. Highly doubt that's some random linux quirk, unless maybe you've been extensively using desktop mode to fiddle around with things. Never had anything like that and haven't heard anyone else have anything like that until your post.
>>719626014Yeah that basically sums up the Switch 2 fanbase. Imagine blowing 500 bucks just for Bananza and 60fps TOTK. Meanwhile it does 360p 20fps on AAA titles.
>>719624038Yeah. By far one of the best things about the deck is the support it gets from the community enabling black magic shit like this. Just a bit of software can basically make your deck feel like a deck 2.

>>719625424Deck 2 is an absolute instant day 1 buy. Unless there's some crippling defect with the hardware itself, the games, support, features, etc. it comes with by default makes it a no brainer.

>>719624047>windows
it's too late for me now, 2nm will be a huge upgrade, i'd rather wait for that hoping someone makes one with it and usable trackpads, solid battery and an oled than invest into rapidly aging silicon
>>719626962And it will still be nowhere near worth it as it becomes more and more obsolete hardware wise over time than it already is. If this was golden age nintendo, might be worth it, but it's modern nintendo, basically the equivalent of ea or the like. What they make now is just slop and they actively shit on their users.

>>719628859>it's modern nintendo, basically the equivalent of ea or the likeThis. I wouldn't go as far to say that most of the new games are bad, but they fail to live up to expectations set by previous entries within each IP. Just a bunch of redundant games that deliver less content and are afraid to take risks.>inb4 what about XYZExceptions exist. Even companies like EA will put out something surprising every now and then. For example, I don't love the direction they took with Bananza, but I respect the risks taken and can appreciate why someone would enjoy the overall experience. Now compare that to the slop that is New Horizons or any modern Mario Sports title. Mario Party isn't much better. Splatoon is rehashing itself into just another terminally online grind fest (with a worse art direction).

Once you figure out how to pirate vidya on linux the world is your oyster. The battery fucking sucks though, it's comically small considering how fucking HUEG the handheld is. >>719626473>>719626725Unless you're playing just to record clips, it's still gonna have the latency of the captured frames, aka it will feel like dogshit. >>719641295What shoulder button issue? And they made those things super easy to replace.
>>719642053>trying to call your own faggoty "based"Sir, have some dignity.
>>719642767You just place the files in the folder as you would on a PC. I’m not sure if a mod manager works, but you probably shouldn’t run Skyrim with over 300 mods on a Steam Deck anyway
>>719623371I had one, but sold it after the game I bought it for (FFXIV) had a graphics update and no longer ran at 60 FPS.I also didn't like the 16:10 aspect ratio.I'm playing a lot of Warframe now, so I'm thinking about buying an OLED Steam Deck. (Original was the OG LCD version)
>>719643008I haven't felt any latency. inb4 the latency is there, I know but I ain't feeling itguess it depends on the type of game being played. Also it depends on what the scaling is, most games only need 2x so the latency is that of a 30-45fps game, which is fine.

>>719644620All me bro. Just you and me in here.
>>719642961>>719643095I have to admit something. I don't mod my games. I'm fairly new to PC gaming (I have a laptop and a Deck), so I'm not all too familiar with how to mod games. From what I understand, I have to browse the game's local files and that's where I can put in the mods. But where exactly do I put in the mods? How do I troubleshoot if any issues arrive? How do I edit the files to create my own mods? These are questions I often ask myself, leaving me fearful of making any mistakes. Course, I know what the answer really is. Just do it. Break shit and learn from it. I just need to put the paddle to the metal and mod my games. That said, I also need to find a decent guide for modding games and find the right game to mod.

>>719646295>retroarchUse standalone with Emudeck.
>>719646430Oh, well then.
>>719646380Lutris is needed on regular Linux, but yeah on Steam Deck you just have Steam and which can do the same thing. Or I guess also if you're worried Valve might be looking at what games you're running or something.
Too bigToo heavy Too expensive
>>719645141Google "(game) mods" and follow the instructions on the particular mod you want. it's retard proof.
>>719646380Well I used it recently to add a setup.exe from a repack as a game so I could install it and then I added the installed game's .exe to it as a game and then added that game through a shortcut to steam and I've had no issues. As long as it works...
>>719646380As >>719646528 says some things I don't want going through Steam because reasonsBut yeah you're right I shouldn't recommend it like I did, Steam's functionality is more than enoughSince I got my deck the amount of >it just werkshas blown me away. I thought everything would be way more jank, and if I wasn't a tinkerer by nature there would be 0 jank
>>719646793You're a faggot
>>719646843
>>719645479>>719646584My issues with guides, and especially ChatGPT, aside, you're right. And just like I said, I need to break shit in order to learn. Thanks for the boost.
Because I'm waiting for the real home console version. I don't need the silly handheld gimmick. If I want to play games outside I just emulate on my phone.
>>719646548It is indeed big but it's not really heavy, and it's surprisingly comfortable to hold.
Steamdeck will never get built in gyro support for RPCS3, and can't even run games without hacks at low fps; the emu is just too process heavy for the deck to ever work well. It is just too weak compared to current gen umpcs, and who is retarded enough to think a device with native portrait display has "the best compatibility" for older games.
>>719647056Go for it dude, best of luck. If not asking for help here or going through ChatGPT, there is guarenteed an easy video or article somewhere doing a step-by-step for your exact game. And like I said before in majority of cases it's simple so from that you can start very easily trouble-shooting yourself. Can I ask if there were any games in paticular you had in mind? Also what're your gripes with ChatGPT? Is it privacy, or it's accuracy?
>>719646548>>719647615Enough talk about OP's dick. What about the steamdeck?
>deck thread>only 50% annoying retardsniceanyone bought thumstick covers for theirs? i wanna try ones with a bit more grip on top
>>719623371Feels too late at this point. I have a ton of games I'd rather play on a desktop that should carry me over until the Steam Deck 2. Might go for the PS handheld if it has steam support.
>>719647721>Can I ask if there were any games in paticular you had in mind?Due to their popularity in the mod scene, I'd like to try DOOM and Skyrim, the later I've never played before, but I understand that at this point, Skyrim requires mods. I was once interested in modding Borderlands 2, but that was before the whole Anti-cheat situation, so that's a bust Fuck you Randy Pokémon's another popular game for modding and I'm a fan of the GBA and DS era, so that's a good start. I also had an Action Replay, so it would be familiar with me. Finally, I have some game files that I want to try out. Transformers Fall of Cybertron, Devastation Internet Archive, as well as the original Fallout which I already ported to my 2DS. >Also what're your gripes with ChatGPT? Is it privacy, or it's accuracy?Mainly accuracy. I've used it for guides and it's either lead me through circles, the advice is far too broad, or it's inaccurate. Also, I admit, it still feels dirty to use it, even despite colleges giving up and letting students use it. As of now, I just use it as a quicker Google for synonym checks.
>>719646350Anon, are you retarded? One frame in 60fps is 17ms while normal input latency is about 30ms. That's 1.5x increase.

>>719645081there's no info yet.
>>719623371Got a laptop instead, way better alternative
>>719649440
>>719623371too bigi just got a vita to mod and it may be the perfect size for a handheld
>>719631015>home consoleI have some bad news for you, going by Valve themselves, Fremont is just some experiment, some testing prototype they're working on, very early development compared to the Ibex, Deckard, Roy, Steam Deck 2, and Half-Life 3. Given that Valve said that the Steam Deck's dock is enough for a home TV experience, I wouldn't be surprised if this home console gets canned all together and Valve just makes a better dock for Deck 2 that's similar to functionality to that of the Switch 2's dock. Home consoles are a dead market.
>>719623371My 5 year old phone runs gran turismo 4 too, is this supposed to be a flex or something?

I have a better device
>>719653318Triggers. >gran turismoYou only need variable acceleration and brake.>MGSMap Square and Cross to triggers. Settings allow you to map a button that's 50% pressed.

Why do I always have to force close CEMU? Other emulators have that happen too sometimes.

>>719632717Oi.Steam-deck-yarou.Nice cat.
>>719654473No problem. Word of warning, Gran Turismo 4 requires you to tinkertranny for a smooth experience on the Deck. Look up how to disable Hardware Download mode for PCSX2.

>>719653318You could also map buttons to trackpad analog press.

>>719623371Not really. Something like ayn thor interests me a lot more than the Deck.
>>719659461The OLED screen is completely inconsequentialon devices like these, the refresh rate and resolution are natively higher on this. Also literally all the hardware is better. Theres a reason people called it the steam deck 2 and steam greenlit it to have their OS out of the box
i don't have money:(

my deck's L and R buttons don't work unless I press them harder and now I don't want to use the thing anymore in case they break completely what do I do
>>719664041They're very easy to replace, but if I'm being honest I've always found it more comfortable to use L4 and R4 for the bumpers
>>719664041>what do I doBuy new parts?
>>719664189>They're very easy to replacenot on the original LCD deckyou have to solder
>>719643484either your PC is abysmal dogshit or you are doing something wrong, the game runs perfectly these days. No slowdowns at all, I used to get low fps when doing a preview of a car on dealerships but after a pcsx2 update the game runs flawlessly all with high blending accuracy, you can even see the ghost on license test.
>>719623371Had the deck, felt it was a bit too slow/limited so I gave it to a friend. Looking forward to the deck 2 which i'll probably get since by then they'll have a much better experience overall.
>>719623745>Is Deck a full blown PCYe....>or is it limited in any way compared to a custom-built PC?Well its Linux so... tough shit
>>719664225now show me where to buy the daughter circuit board with the switch on it which is the actual fault prone component

>waiting on Deck 2 to hopefully improve battery>the reality is any improvements in battery made, will be squandered away by a heavier CPU to reach 'playable' framerates on modern games
I already have a big ass fucking computer.
>>719667941>implying i'd be playing modern slop to begin withIf Deck 2 had the same battery life with a more powerful processor, then it'll clearly be able to run older games for longer.
