Now that the dust has settled, what do we think of Unicorn Overlord one year later?
>>719626495Extremely mediocre
>>719626574Why?
>>719626495peaki wish it had a free for all mode where you lpayed against ai
Forever one of my favorite games of all time.
>>719626495Retarded armor
Hard carried by waifus
>>719626627Piss easy gameplayGeneric JPRG storyVery basic nip world building, as in barely any world building at allCardboard cutout characters, but at least they look nice
the sequel can't come soon enough
>>719626495honestly the only reason I regret not getting a switch.
>>719626495Average.Looks good, sounds good, controls good enough, too much filler maps that aren't interesting, Bastoria and Albion don't have much good content. Also there was a pic in the marketing telling that you could go to any country in any order, but because levels are fixed if you achieve entering Bastoria you're overleveled for Drakenhold and most Elfheim. The plot has problems because the game acts like you have more freedom at advancing it than you actually have, so most characters barely exist, with Scarlett and Joseph being the only characters with plot events outside their region. And Joseph has like two and that's it.
>>719626495It was alright. At some point I turned on easy mode, so I don't have to micro-manage my teams so much. It was exhausting switching units and shit. Just let me play my favorite units
>>719626769>as in barely any world building at allThere is a shitton of world-building in this game. A lot of it in the archive as background lore for basically almost every fort, city, family, noble line and all manners aspects of the world. Then there is the whole background of the Zenoiran empire, the Unicorn and the Maiden, which is genuinely cool. They actually spend a lot more thought on this world than people give it credit.
>>719626495Mediocre game with sexy waifus, like almost every other Vanillaware title
>>719626495It starts off really strong but it loses its edge by the time you finish the first area/rescue Scarlett. The limitations early in the game made the game significantly more enjoyable (might also be due to some semblance of difficulty) but then you just don't stop getting more and more characters, along with equipment. It's towards the start of the second area does the game show its flaws.First is that the gameplay remains the same for the rest of the game. Getting so many units and equipment is a shallow attempt to add depth to the game, and it fails to do that, instead it just overwhelms players by giving them too many options. That would still make for a decent game but then you factor in the coding that you're expected to do and the game turns into a massive chore, as after every battle you likely have multiple changes to a bunch of units/squads. The coding is without a doubt the worst part of the game because it's so restrictive, requiring multiple lines to do what you'd want something to do, and on top of that some things don't work as written or as expected so you not only have to spend time creating the codes but you also have to diligently watch the fights (something I preferred to skip) to be absolutely sure that things function as they should. Overall a pretty shit game that had a great start. The game was clearly carried by the waifus, as can be seen in these threads.
It was alright but a bit too easy, even on the hardest difficulty. The only fight that ever gave me issue was trying to find the right combination for the final arena fight to unlock the giant woman.
>>719626769If you play on normal of course its piss easy
>>719626495You can fuck your cousin so at least an 8/10
>>719628414Cletus approved
I miss when Vanillaware made action games
>>719626495I liked it a lot.
>>719627936Here
>>719628330nta but even on the hardest difficulty the game is a joke. The gameplay is by far the weakest part about UO.
>>719628317How the fuck is it easy I stopped playing on that Angel Island
Virginia sexo
My 2024 GOTY, and I literally do not care about waifus. The biggest problem with the game is that it's way too easy, but I solved that by placing a simple restriction: not using items in battles. This drastically shifts the balance of the game, as now you need to carefully consider when to spend your Valor on skills and any deaths on your side are much more impactful. I also made sure to play all the missions in order always, so I wouldn't overlevel past them.In the end I was adjusting my units basically before every single battle, and had to take enemy types and Valor skills into account all the time, the games gets way more tactical.
>>719626495Why are harem shitters always so inhumanly mentally ill? They are literally constantly trying to force other people to see their fetishes and beg for validation.
>>719629178I built a Cavalier unit with a Sandstorm Staff wielding Selvie decked out in nothing but equipment that made sure she'd always go first to debuff the enemy with blind, all the while the three Cavaliers would exclusively use their 1 AP Cavalier buff attacks (all three of them would have maxed out AP). This unit would crush anything that wasn't an extremely defensive unit that was practically immune to physical damage.
>>719629835All the game really needs is to hide battle outcomes. With that, unit knowledge actually becomes important and having so many different units actually adds to the tactics, rather than just being there in an attempt to add depth.
>>719626495People literally only remember it for the waifubait, that should tell you enough
>>719626495it looks nicethat's it
>>719626495One of my favorite games of all time. I've put over 400 hours into this, and every time a new thread gets made it makes me want to play it again. One of the few games I enjoy replaying, there's so many different 'challenge runs' you can think of, like generics only, rapport squads only, infantry only, no items, no valor skills, no shops, no row/column/board attacks and a lot more. All these result in different team comps you can make and there's a lot of fun to be had just in that even if the game is overall easy. It helps that 90% of the girls are top fucking tier, and you can marry them.
>>719630127>>719630183Vanillaware games in a nutshell
>>719630538>It helps that 90% of the girls are top fucking tier, and you can marry them.>self-insertingYou are not Alain, he's his own character and you're just picking girls for him to fuck
>>719630538Very based anon.
>>719630538what's your favorite challenge run?
>>719626495Solid 8.5/10Loved the gameplay. I found the Expert difficulty just right. Anons keep saying it's easy but any game is easy if you abuse mechanics.I didn't mind the classic hero story, it's hard to fuck up. But I found most of the bonding events lacking and I didn't care for the majority of side characters by the end of the game.OST is pretty meh.
>>719631282>I found the Expert difficulty just rightSame. Last boss was brutal but man I did make me feel accomplished when I had an epiphany on how to beat it, at the very last second of my first try.
great game and one of my faves. but I do think some of the hairs looks retarded and ai generated.
>>719630769The rapport only one on TZ was the hardest because of how limiting it is, most endgame teams have only 3 members possible (Monica, Melisandre and Liza were great together), a couple with 4 (knights of the rose) and only 1 with 5 members (Lex, Chloe, Clive, Josef and Hodrick). The great thing is Alain is a joker, he can go in any team as he has rapports with everyone. My favorite was the no row/column/board attacks playthrough. Basically every skill using AP had to be single targets (gryphons were useless), but I could use PP skills, like Gladiators Wide Counter, or Yunifi's Triple Counter. So it was a lot of fun to make team comps where every team had to efficiently take out single threats quickly, and defend/counter (Virginia fucking shines in this) whilst staying alive.
>>719631282>I didn't mind the classic hero story, it's hard to fuck upThis game moved me, legit. It's such an honest, heroic game. Certain elements of the plot have problems for sure. But overall, there is something very genuine about this game.>OST is pretty mehWell okay, fuck you.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b34mfybG8GE
>>719626574fpwp
>>719631784>The rapport only onehow does that work?you get rapport + <3 even for generics
>>719626495Gameplay is peak. Art is peak. Music is peak. Plot is dogshit.Owl woman is Platonic option. 8/10
>>719626495Waifufag VN that tries to pretend that it's an actual game (it fails)
Damn, it really has been about a year and a half now. I loved the game while I was playing it, but knew when I was done i wouldn't be touching it again any time soon. In fact, i never even did the extra few missions in the post gameAt the very least, we're a big closer to whatever they come out with next, and thats always good
>>719632359Basically any two characters who have a rapport conversation with each other (indicated with a handshake symbol inside the rapport heart). Some pairs have multiple conversations and some just have one
>>719626806>vanillaware>sequels
>>719626495I think the story was bad and it didnt "flow" well. The characters were mostly boring too except for a few, and not like you got much story to get attached to them either. The art as always is beautiful and top tier. The characters are incredible hot as usual. The gameplay was great. Would love to see it again in some form.
>>719627770It's not switch exclusive
>>719626495it was funcavalry super overpowered though lol
bastorias was such a shithole it made me quit the game
Any ideas what the game looks like without having been redone in development? It's obvious the who "kill or recruit" a character/"mad science research or quarantine the area was supposed have an effect on the game later. Half baked game, wish the rapports were better and more romantic.
>>719628286>spreadsheet equipment menu game is spreadsheet equipment menu gameI will never understand people who get into this game and are taken aback when it plays exactly as advertised and expected. It's genuinely baffling to me. Is it because it's Vanillaware and they're more known for their actiony shit?If you don't like games where you're constantly tweaking stats and gear in menus, you will hate UO, or at least not warm to it. If you don't like being in menus, there's nothing left for you other than visuals. That's all it is. That's the all the entire genre is. Heed this advice.
>>719626495The combat is braindead and the story is pretty weak. Pretty art can't carry it. VW should've stuck to action games.
>>719626495>Who is chosen...?you know who
>>719626495I liked it, but I found the game as a whole disappointing. It is too big and too easy. Way too many mediocre battles. Waifufaggots will forever sing its praises.
>>719635808Edit.
>>719635808This but in her choco version
>>719626495It's okay, I was enjoying it for a while but after liberating most of the first country and wyvern country, I found myself starting to get bored since the combat didn't really feel like it was evolving that much as I progressed. Even on the highest difficulty that's available at the start, the game is still too easy. The only map that ever challenged me was one where I had to go save a stupid Green unit who would die right away so the difficulty didn't even come from my units, just from a weak NPC. Everything from the combat to how you recruit units to how you go to a new place and use your ring to undo some fag's brainwashing, it all felt so routine and monotonous just playing the same loop over and over. I paused my playthrough to go play other SRPGs but I might go back and finish it, maybe I just needed a break from it for a while.
