This guy gets it. Fallout 3 was amazing, Oblivion was really cool, Morrowind had very fun moments, Assassin's Creed 1 I saw a lot of potential, and it's been downhill ever since. From Emperion Galactic Survival to AC valhalla. I think Dragons Dogma was the only other open world I really got into. Great combat, good open world, funny and serious times and the everfall was a surprise endgame. Dark Arisen was fun too but not open world in the general sense.
>>
>>719650353
The level of immersion that is possible with modded Skyrim is pretty amazing. Its hard to imagine Elder Scrolls VI living up to it.

It'd probably have to be Breath of the Wild. Admittedly, the map is kind of shit, but the interaction with the vegetation and having monsters like the Guardians chase you around is something that other games do not do, not even its sequel.

Another contender that comes to mind is Assassin's Creed Origins, which has just the most incredible map I've seen. Less interaction, but it just has incredible biodiversity and dynamic events.

I would say Breath of the Wild simply due to how hands off it is. Likes sure, you have the typical map towers, but they only reveal topography and not where anything is. TotK does it too, but is a little too dense. BotW had a really great balance of wide open vistas vs things to interact with

Gothic 2. Maybe the story is generic, and maybe you don't like the combat, but there is no game with a better open world. It hit the absolute golden ratio of the perfect world size and density. Add to that a whole bunch of hidden treasures and places, a moody, mysterious soundtrack, and it's just the most satisfying exploration an rpg can ever offer.

This is open world games we're talking about. I suppose I could bring up Mafia 1's free ride or Arx Fatalis if you want me to age myself because I like walking in those worlds, but adventure is difficult to do and I think that Breath and Origins have done it the best so far despite being far from perfect.

Tears had too much junk for me to enjoy and I also didn't like how the caves weren't dark. The sky islands and underworld did not live up to their potential either; it would have been better if the game had a new map.

the areas in the game are all amazing in their own way. Even sourwood which is filled with ticks and witches still has a great atmosphere to it. I really only think it started to fall off when you get to the iceberg and its bad platforming with constant combat arenas.
>>
>>719651643
Cool game, some of the areas have great atmosphere. I especially liked Granite Gash.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_Naxt51rdk
But it's not quite an open world game, you're kinda forced to go in a specific order area by area, and the later areas become less and less open themselves, too.

Honestly it’s gotta be oblivion. It’s really the only game that has reliable ways to surprise the player with content. I pirated this game and haven’t touched a shitendo console since the Wii. That being said, I don’t think other open world games really capture the fun of exploring like BOTW does. Every other open world game just feels like a gay quest marker simulator where learning the next part of a quest is across the map just leaves a garbage feeling in my gut, but in BOTW, sure, there’s a marker on top of a mountain but getting there is actually fun too its the game that i think i used fast travel the least in.
>>
>>719652549
Actually, open world games need to be larger and discourage feckless travel by not having waypoints and fast travel.
>>
>>719653029
I didn’t know you could fast travel in oblivion until i did it on accident at the end of the main campaign. It kept me engaged still lel. Love that game but I’m too jaded and crusty to feel the magic on in anything I play

Gothic 1 is a better "open world" imo. I prefer the slightly smaller, condensed scale. The remake is gonna be goated
>>
>>719650117
I’ve been playing BOTW for the first time recently and it’s easily BOTW.
Other games are more engaging in different ways but BOTW is the only open world game that truly feels like an adventure. You see something in the distance, or a funny shape on the map, and then you go find out what it is. Simple shit.
But other games are too pussy to allow you to walk really far without there being villages or rest stops or fast travel points along the way. E.g. every point in Skyrim is roughly equidistant to a major city. You can really go to nowheresville in BOTW.

I think the one that felt the most like an adventure to me was Breath of the Wild. I wouldn't call it overall the best open world game on every merit but I liked how traversing this super big and open world felt.

It's funny that open world games have been around for so long and yet I still feel like the one that defines what the Open World genre can do still hasn't come out. They're almost all too flat in some particular field. Bad exploration, bad traversal, bad regular gameplay, bad writing, it's always something.

Bullshit. The first open world games I played (excluding Gothic) were Morrowind Assassin's Creed, Oblivion and Fallout 3, in this order, and I hated all of them but the first one because of their fault, repetitiveness and shallow game mechanics.
What you are REALLY saying is that you were just a kid and got wowed by the scope of such games and were unable to critically
>>

Open "world" uses to mean well crafted WORLDS you can get immersed in through strong world-buioding and lore. Open world now means empty space you ride a mount or car through.

Hard to say. The Assassin's Creed games always are beautiful and full of life. Fun to traverse and are very technically impressive but nothing really to explore. That tends told true with lots of open world games that simulate real places and cities, like Spiderman and GTA. Elden Ring is breathtaking visually and exploration is fun, but the world is so dead. I don't know op. I haven't played a ton of open world games. Skyrim was cool.
>>
Soulsniggers really going to sit there and tell you a NPC standing in a single spot forever until their "quest" dictates them to magically teleport into another spot to remain completely static until they die isnt lifeless. Reminds me of the masterfully crafted questline in Jarburg where you talk to the small jar sitting on some stairs, rest at the site of Grace, then repeat this five more times until his "quest" can advance and whoops he died - WHO could have seen that coming?
>>
>>719655402

Agreed. You have access to most of the world from the start, you can traverse it in various ways, and there's almost always something on top of that mounting, near that solitary tree, behind that hill.
The downside is that there isn't that many interesting things to actually find. Weapons wear out, there aren't really any equipment to find, ingredients are plentiful everywhere making them less special... there aren't many "wow, I found something great" moments for a game that's so long to play through, with so much space to explore.

I like New Vegas, but fuck no. You can feel how empty and restricted that game is because of consoles.

There's no trash loot there
>>
>>719658220
everybody's favorite item "glass shard". it's like a prism stone but without the thing that made them useful
>>
>>719658220
Nothing but trash. Game was way too fucking stingy with Smithing Stones considering the metric fuck ton of weapons it has. Then SotE they made a big, beautiful, empty world and that's when they decided to stop being so stingy with Smithing Stones, but they were all you fucking found.

Inazuma is very dense. Sumeru and Natlan has lots of open space to just traverse
>>
>>719658220
Catacombs by design are filled with trash loot because they have a bunch of glovewort which does literally nothing unless you didn't beat the game
>>
>>719650117
Morrowind. Last good open world game.
>>
if FF7 rebirth didn't had to do lists and let you found all that it's already on the map by yourself it woudl be kind of close to it.

I don't hate chadley as a character per se, I hate what they did with him, he could still give you rewards for your findings and unlock materia, but the fucking grocery list was a bit too much.

I genuinely cannot think of a worse open world

it really is a shame, the game is beautiful and they tried with huanglong, but in rinascita there just isn't anything to find, everything is already neatly marked so you already know that there's nothing outside of those marked locations which means the gameplay just consists of flying between checkboxes

Dragon's Dogma
KCD
BotW
Gothic 1/2
MGSV
Just Cause 2/3
The Forest/Sons of the Forest

Shit open world games:
Anything by Rockstar
Anything by CDPR
Anything by Bethesda
Anything by Ubisoft
Elden Ring
KCD2

I'm gonna throw Thief and Thief 2 in there. Definitely more open world than any ubisoft game.

I like the first map but am just not really enjoying the second map. What do dislike so much about II?

I felt the same way, but its still an amazing game. I think the jewish shit and the black character really burned a lot of people.
>>
>>719662414
The quests in the game do not support the open world like the first game did. It tried too hard to be a railroaded cinematic experience from what I played.

>>719662101
Thief and Thief 2 are some of my favorite games, but they aren't open world.

That's just a lie. Just say you don't like the gameplay, design or gacha aspect, but pretending the overworld is full with "daily shit" is just wrong. The game has been running for years and is filled to the brim with world quests. Is it mostly the same running around solving easy puzzles and fighting weak enemies? Sure, but if you enjoy the scenery and soundtrack, the general exploration gameplay is very well enjoyable.

The *best* open world games aren't even open world but really just narrative games where you occasionally return to areas.
So basically metroidvanias.

I think the Great Plateau in BotW is best open world area ever made, and as much I liked BotW, it peaked right there

For me it was Gothic 3

Has to be runescape back in 2004 when I was 8 years old. Hadn't seen anything like it and to this day I still haven't.
