> Casually blows everyone elses music out of the water
How do they do it. I assumed it was over for them after Uematso but even FF16 had a legendary soundtrack even though the game was shit
>>
square enix, falcom, and sega still have major top tier sound teams despite their games not reflecting the quality of it.
>>
FF16 was good and the OST was mediocre

Post ONE song from FF16 that isn't generic fake epic trash.
Pro tip: You can't
>>
>Generic Orchestral music #4058
I can't remember a good Japanese soundtrack since Demon's Souls. Even AC6 was mostly a bore aside from 2 or 3 tracks.
>>
>>719651607
sadly falcom sound team has fallen off hard
>>
Uematsu is a generational talent, a genius. He didn't even study theory, he just "gets" music.
>after Uematsu
they build off his legacy, but yeah, Japan has good composers. They have a respect for Western classical music, and they combine that with their eclectic & poppy tastes to pump out great melodies with nice orchestral instrumentation.
>>
>>719651726
this isn't a representative example, bit I really like this track

for trails maybe (theres like fucking 7 games telling one story its hard to pump out consistent music for that) but legend of heroes and ys still go hard
>>
>>719651536
>Hoo boy I really love generic orchestral shit
>>
>>719651886
I think what many Japanese composers understand that many western ones don’t is the importance of melody. If it’s not a song you can hum to yourself long after you switch the game off, it’s not going to stick.

This isn’t to say there aren’t good western composers (Jesper Kyd, Tim Follin and Jeremy Soule are geniuses), but too many western soundtracks blend into nothingness.

isnt that most composers? who even studies theory? hans zimmer?
>>
>>719652284
all the main composers did from the baroque through to the romantic & modernist periods.
>>
>>719652000
Wow okay that track is actually dope. As expected of someone inspired by YMO.
>>
>>719651536
they have lost their touch, nothing since the 2000s was memorable
>>
>>719651536
Atlus and Sandfall are the two best sound teams right now.

You're forgetting ACE (the sound team Nintendo put together specifically for Xenoblade), they're top-tier too.

Falcom Sound Team fell off because like 2015-2017 or something like that, a lot of their core composers left after drama/mistreatment and like 50-70% of their soundtracks are outsourced to contractors instead of in-house. It's why modern Trails games lack leitmotifs in spite of the first 7 games having very consistent leitmotifs and stuff.

Then there's Jindo, who's technically a contractor and not in-house, but he's been with Falcom for almost 30 years and carries the modern soundtracks on his fucking back.

jindo always puts out the greatest final dungeon and boss themes

I agree, didn't even need to read the rest

kek
>>
>>719652007
even Ys X ost was weak compared to previous entries. they've still fallen off as a whole for reasons >>719652595 mentions
they're still decent but definitely nowhere NEAR the falcom of old. they'll never make a Vacant Interference or Silver Will tier masterpiece again
>>
Do people really think ff16 music is generic. There were some truly great tracks on the OST
>>
>>719652813
I'm not even being contrarian either, I genuinely believe that. I was surprised to see the OST praised so much when its one of the least memorable ff OST's for me (though tbf I skipped the 13 games and 15)
Uematsu is my vidya music goat and nobody compares
>>
>>719652595
>You're forgetting ACE (the sound team Nintendo put together specifically for Xenoblade), they're top-tier too.
Xenoblade has Mitsuda overseeing and directing the soundtracks too
though he hasn't put out anything on the level of Chrono Trigger, Cross or Xenogears and keeps on getting outshined by xenoblade's other composers.
>>
>>719652917
Uematso is the media goat for me ( i think he is even better than the hollywood composers ) but ff16 was a great soundtrack as well although a bit generic. I still listen to ff7, 8 and 16s soundtracks everyday on my wagecuckie job
>>
>>719653169
I agree but that's because I hate movie osts. they are so soulless compared to vidya
>>
>>719652284
Basically every composer in existence
