And that's how Hornet was born.A bunch of time passes. One of the rejected Million Billion kids blunders into the town just as the airtight seal is coming loose, (actual spoilers)and turns out he's actually an empty shell (probably) so he kills the sleeping dudes and goes into the airtight room to kill the hollow knight and then the radiance like in the original plan. And that's the best ending of the game.

A wyrm showed up and decided to make that place his territory and shed his monstrous form to become the pale king, and through his power granted sentience and individual wills to the bugs. This does seem to be dependent on something he changed in hallownest itself, as bugs that leave lose their memories. The bugs neglected and eventually forgot the radiance and started to worship the pale king instead, building his kingdom. The radiance, which still existed within the unconscious memory of the whole civilization, began to reassert itself by directly enthralling bugs. This was interpreted as a physical infection, as enthralled bugs started to secrete a golden mucous, but in fact spread randomly and could not be quarantined. The pale king pursued different methods to try to contain or destroy the infection, ultimately settling on the creation of a perfect vessel in which to contain the radiance's essence and thus minimize her influence on the world. He had thousands of children with another divine being, and cast the eggs of their consummation into a pit of abyssal darkness beneath his castle, believing that the void was bereft of conscious thought and therefore when those children hatched, they would be born cognitively "hollow" and thus unable to be controlled by the radiance. Eventually, he found one that seemed perfect, and took him to the palace to be prepared, while the rest of his children were sealed in the abyssal pit, although some (including the game's protagonist) found ways to escape. The chosen child, the hollow knight, was rigorously physically trained and magically prepared, and then, through means not disclosed, took the essence of the radiance within himself.

This "shade lord", as the community calls him, then emerges back into the real world, which is probably very bad, but the infection is still cured, and the hollow knight actually survives and emerges intact from the black egg, so it's not all bad.
