ITT: games that were better off rushed that would've been much worse if it actually got the delay it needed
Bugs in games (that don't make them unplayable) are both fun to experience and charming. I kinda wish newer games would stop making week-one patches to alleviate non-essential bugs, especially if they are single player games.
>>719681153It's not day 1 patches that's the issue (well it kind of is) it's more the fact that no one makes their own engine anymore. That's what really kills the magic that comes from old janky games
>>719681317That's probably is the biggest culprit, but something like a custom engine isn't really practical nowadays. I was just specifying something tangible devs could do instead which is far more likely
>>719680681PAL was all it needed. It fixed basically everything wrong with the game.
>>719683329need a quick rundown
>>719681153Most of the shit that people claim were bugs or unintentional in Melee were actually fully documented in official online resources(Japan only) at the time of release. There's old Usenet forum posts made by Sakurai himself explaining a bunch of advanced mechanics, including how to wavedash, before the game even came out in the west.
>>719683467Modest nerfs to Fox, Falco, Marth and Sheik's willpower. Some bug fixes.
>>719680681World of Warcraft
>>719683712Actually sounds pretty good. Why aren't we playing on pal?
>>719683653Wasn't talking about melee; I also watched the AsumSaus video>>719683817Spacies control the scene and the most affected by PAL is the spacies
>>719683817All the relevant tournaments are in America. Even PAL regions all switched to the NTSC version.
>>719683817Because the community decides the version and the community is retarded
>>719680681pic not related. The kind of rush job melee was had more to do with content than how the game played. A fully completed adventure mode is the kind of thing that would have happened with more time. Smash didn't get dumb or lose its gameplay ambition until brawl which was a response to melee
>>719683930The community is retarded for other reasons. Melee is dead as fuck outside the US and Canada.
>>719683904Well anyway, it's still a very common misconception. Nintendo's design philosophy was just very different before the Wii came out. Even Mario Kart had skillful mechanics and up until DS you could just ignore blue shells if you were able to time a very narrow mini turbo window.
>>719683653>Usenet forum posts made by Sakurai himself explaining a bunch of advanced mechanics, including how to wavedashYou can't just make things up on the internet
>>719684019Mostly true, but there are still a few characters which shipped fundamentally unfinished and would have probably been hotfixed
>>719684019
>>719684117
>>719680681halo 2 had a crazy amount of bugs that players just ended up using instead of crying about, superjumps, sword cancelling, everything was on the table if you could do it, if they patched out all of the abuse and prevented you from getting to cool areas in the map it wouldn't have been the same game
>>719684117>>719684221https://www.nintendo.co.jp/n01/n64/software/nus_p_nalj/smash/flash/0928/index.htmlSome of the old guides on the official Nintendo website
>>719684221Ermm wavedash is a glitch bros our response??
>>719684132>>719684198sure some character fixes and corrected oversights would be in there but most people who claimed it being rushed was good were worried about the physics being butchered and stuff, which just wouldn't happen. The meta might change but g&w having a real shield and being able to l-cancel or kirby's f-throw actually working would be consensus positives
I have to wonder how many of the fundamental Quake 2 movement mechanics were fully intended by the developer? Something like rocket jumping seems obviously intentional, but strafing seems to be a byproduct of how vectors were used to calculate speed in games from that time, which is a property that's pretty commonly used for bugs and exploits on games of that era
>glitch that lets you fly>use it to get to a hard to reach place>look around and explore soul
>>719683329no it didn'tGame and Watch's aerials still don't L-cancelyou still fall through the floor on pokemon stadiumyoshi's running grab still misses everything because the hitbox is too far into the z-axisthe last hit of luigi's dash attack is still missingroy's dash attack is still missing its hitboxthe invisible ceiling glitch is still therefountain of dreams still lagsbattlefield's ledges are still fuckedhonestly you could go on forever, PAL didn't fix very many things
Don't worry. We can't read.
>>719684976These fixes should've been modded into UCF years ago
>>719684198>I hurt myself today...
>>719684117It's true. It's just a webpage. >>719684368linked the Melee one, but there's a long-ass N64 one that's just a white webpage with a few pictures where Sakurai personally explains all the "advanced techniques" in the game, including Z-canceling. Sakurai's online presence is probably what led to the Brawl Dojo being an official thing, now that I think about it.I thought I had the link, but I don't.
>>719683329PAL is a buff to Puff, and that means the game is worse for it. Fox doesn't need to be nerfed. He's actually fun to play against if you are on another high tier. But nerfing him is a direct buff to Puff, who loses to him and not a single other character. The more Puffs there are the less fun the game is to play. And if Fox goes from 55-45 to 50-50 against Puff she probably becomes the best character in the game, and definitely jumps past Marth and Falco for second.
>>719686576>sheiks auto win throw is gone>Falco requires 5 more IQ points to pilotIt's actually a buff to all of the mid and high tiers. A character like Samus could probably actually win super majors every once and a while. >wahh puff gets betterFox still has his broken kill confirms on her. If the subtle recovery nerf and miniscule toned down up-smash were what was winning you games, you're literally NGMI.
Majora's Mask. Aonuma didn't have time to remove all the soul that Koizumi crammed into the game until the 3DS version.
there should be a way to turn on pal on slippi
>>719680681it's weird how a 13 month rush job like melee ends up having the best mechanics, the best single player, the best multiplayer, the best design, the best all-around everything compared to the super long developments of stuff like ultimate and 4it's really frustrating that they haven't been able to make cool single player modes like adventure mode or break the targets like melee had.and that's just the tip of the iceberg, they could make all sorts of cool single player modes but for some reason they've never bothered. it's so sad, smash has so much potential
>>719690861>the best single playerThat's Brawl. Stop being a contrarian.
>>719690861melee even has the best music. seriously how the fuck did they do it>>719691373lol
>>719691373I didn't like how Brawl had so many OC characters in subspace, I liked that melee actually used nintendo properties in adventure mode. Plus melee has way better physics and mechanics to actually platform around with, everyone is super floaty in brawl.Brawl also did away with character-by-character target tests which was terrible. That was so cool in melee, and look at how endlessly entertaining it's been for the community for so long. Brawl really fucked it up for everyone.
>>719683467Nerfs to Ganondorf and Link
>>719684629Strafe movement was a deliberate choice by developers to make movement feel more fluid. It wasn't originally in doom (and later, quake) during development, but the devs felt sluggish and slow when moving while turning. To compensate they added the speed gain when you turn while strafing and it inadvertently made the most iconic movement tech possible.Contrast this with, say, reverse bhop in HL2. It hard caps your velocity by applying a negative modifier if you're above a certain speed, but they fucked it up and it speeds you up exponentially when doing it backwards. This is a case of valve trying to make the game LESS fun and only creating a glitch because of their fuckup.
>>719684629I've never played quake, is it 1 or 2 that has airstrafing?
>>719682064it is practical, tim sweeney just sold everyone a bridge in brooklyn and convinced everyone that his engine is good enough to be industry standard when it isn't. we're going to look at this generation of games and ask ourselves what the fuck went wrong and it's all going to trace back to unreal
>>719687153I feel bad for the mid tier players who get merked by Sheik, but not so bad I would tolerate a more prominent puff. Samus being a staple in top 8s would be awful too. Puff incentivizes lame play, Samus simply does not have any good approach options; the only way to play her is a spammy and defensive slog. Playing against her is just the most boring shit.
>>719695496it's a fighting game there will always be lame play
>>719695606There's a difference between>I am choosing to play like a lame faggotand>I am playing like a lame faggot out of sheer necessity because the character can't do anything else
>>719695496Morse and Weavens are sick to watch. Samus isn't "lame", she's just unorthodox. I also enjoy fighting her, probably because I have a experience with 2d fighters and she kinda comes off as a swaggy Ryu trapped in the cut throat world of melee.
>>71968381755hz
>>71969622750 I am retard
>>719695496PAL fixes sheik, taking away the dthrow makes her way more dynamic and interesting. Not more boring chaingrabs, no more braindead easy kill confirms, just proper interactive gameplay
>>719696264it's 60, you can pick 60 when you boot the game up
>>719696314sheik's down throw is not an issue. it takes a long time to execute so your teammate can come over and save you.
