Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus by Fargus (Russian) was great, in terms of translation, UI/font, AND VA.
No idea if they ever did the first one, though.
It also had the strangest bug I've ever seen in a game that bordered on creepypasta.

The Neverhood (one of the two Russian localizations) did a similar thing, even going as far as changing some textures for the sake of shitposting.

I'll try to be brief (and fail miserably)

>be like six years old
>get Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus
>the game has no music (which was common in pirated translations, honestly adds to the atmosphere sometimes)
>a couple of very specific SFX get "stuck" and play permanently once encountered on a screen, even if you quit to the title screen. The only way to get rid of this is to relaunch the game. These looping effects included the green gas sound, probably the water sound, and the round minecart sound, which as you can guess was extremely annoying.
>Am small, so not allowed to play on the computer for more than a couple hours, so usually just turn it off within that timeframe

>One day, go outside while leaving the game on, which was uncommon for me
>Return some time later. The game suddenly has music, and no audio bugs whatsoever.
>Feel like I am going fucking insane.

>Try to test various theories.
>Turns out, if you leave the game running for a specific time (like 3 hours probably), at one point you suddenly hear the "secret room sound" (which I always hated cause it's so loud)
>At that moment, all the audio issues with the game disappear.

However, that wasn't the crazy part.
I later discovered that the 3 hour countdown didn't hinge on the game being on, as sometimes I would turn it on and it would already be working as intended, with no secret room sound. I monitored the game further.

No, as it turned out, the countdown somehow monitored the fucking PC being on. If you leave your PC running for 3 hours or so, it solves audio issues in Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus. Doesn't matter what you;re doing in the meantime.
Rebooting the PC resets the invisible countdown.
Once I learned that and convinced my dad I wasn't fucking crazy, I would just boot my PC without playing it so I could play Oddworld later as God intended. And the process being so cumbersome, it made finally hearing the music in the game so comfy and so-ever-sweet each time.

the only way I'd be able to tell you if a localisation is good is if I was fluent in both languages and had a good understanding of the culture of both as well.

But on the other hand, you don't need THAT much fluency to tell when you're getting served dog crap. And even if you can't hit the high notes, you can sometimes tell when someone's power level is much higher than yours.

Simple example. The Gyakuten Saiban/AA localization is controversial, but it was also thought to be impossible. You don't need an ace JLPT to understand the quality of work of translating Franziska von Karma bakabakashi rants into english.

Also, the people doing the localizing don't have the level of functionality you describe either.

They were localized in 2000s. Localizers still had credibility. They were taken seriously until the mid 2010s with translation mistakes being seen as exceptions not the rule. There was a Spanish boomer comedian called 'El Chiquito de la Calzada'. He was extremely iconic, to the point that many of his expressions are still used today (mostly by people who are 30+). The Spanish localization for Little King's Story on the Wii is pure fanfiction, made by a guy who clearly liked El Chiquito a bit too much. Nearly every "translated" phrase in the game has some sort of reference, and it's nearly incomprehensible.

English localization for Final Fantasy XII is good. They gave it this Shakespearean-style upgrade, and the localizer was a guy who studied Classical Japanese Lit at freaking Keio and Harvard. It was a stars-aligned moment, and they even got English VAs with theater backgrounds, so the final EN dub came out super polished. It was so good that newer FF games couldn’t even compare.

I’ve got a Japanese friend who was baffled that I liked FFXII, until I realized the Japanese dialogue is just plain and straightforward like any other FF/JRPG game.

I can vouch for Nintendo's LatAM works specifically being surprisingly solid, feels like the team is made up of people who're very passionate for the games (or alternatively, very autistic). They seem to go for a nice balance between NoE having more literal translations, and whatever the fuck Treehouse is doing, keeping the important stuff and meaning there but allowing for some funnier stuff where it fits. One of the directors for the division is really pasisonate as far as I can tell, Cristina Jáuregui. She was the singer for Penny's Song in English WarioWare GIT, and Nintendo released a Spanish version of that track on their youtube channel just... out of nowhere. https://youtu.be/Ej1DqDN9AEc Was never used in-game as a patch or anything, they just uploaded it for the hell of it, and I imagine she likely had some influence there, since the translated lyrics are very well done. She's also the voice for the PA in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, as well as the LatAm voiceover for those Kirby storytime videos they put out a while ago. As far as dubbing is concerned whoever's in charge of Nintendo LatAm is doing a phenomenal job, getting A-listers or their mentees for any game with voice acting, and I strongly believe they have way better voice direction than the English VAs do. Favorite example, Zelda crying in BotW, I think LatAm does a way better job at delivering the weight of the scene https://youtu.be/kYfVul6HavM (1:47 for English, 3:32 for LatAm)
I'm also fairly glad that the way Spanish works means we avoid retarded nonbinary bullshit and characters are just male or female, very glad the English ones haven't been retarded enough to push that shit onto the Spanish team

I do not understand why a studio would translate to Russian in the current day, besides the obvious controversy it would cause, the Russian economy isn't that big and it's only deteriorating as time goes by, and every other country that has a considerable Russian-speaking population besides Russia can understand English just fine, so no need to translate it.

All in all it just seems more trouble than it's worth. A German translation would make more sense given it's a considerably larger economy and market.
