So that's why the people praising Hollow Knight ask us what we didn't like about the game when we say it's just a 7/10, they didn't play the game themselves. Now that makes a lot of sense.

or, you know, the slow trickle of people who bought it over the years all decided to replay it or finish it for silksong

Compared to the actual good games in the genre, HK is about a 6-7 out of 10. The start is really tedious and the middle has a lot of huge open empty space so a lot of people will get bored.

The main appeals are being a decent game in a mostly dead genre where its main competition is often actual trash, and being very fucking cheap.

It is bad since the game sold 15 million copies. Games that sell 2-5 million regularly surpass 100k concurrent players, sometimes 200k. That means that the number of Hollow Knight owners versus the number of people who have actually played Hollow Knight is really, really far apart.

Yes, it is bad to buy video games, never play them, and tell everyone you are it's biggest fan.

This is what kept happening to me. I've tried to finish it like two or three times and I always stall out like halfway through. The map is really unpleasant and unintuitive to navigate compared to other games in the genre. The combat is fun, and I think the atmosphere and art direction are good, but the exploration feels like butts.

I really wish I liked it more. Hopefully Silksong has improved on that.

>>719796590
HK has sold a lot of copies over its lifetime. It didn't have a major launch, which is why there's no massive concurrent player jump at the beginning. It was mostly carried by word of mouth, so the sales remained consistent rather than having a massive influx then dropping off.

I'm imagining Silksong will be a very different chart, given its impact on the servers.

>>719796829
To me it's mostly the lack of interesting movement options. You get dash and double jump and that's pretty much it (and I guess abusing the ghosts for skips is neat) but movement never stops feeling awkward and sluggish, which isn't helped by most of the combat feeling very tedious. Ender Magnolia was much better for this since if you mastered air combos you could do some pretty interesting skips. Combat also had a lot more options than HK where you're stuck with the nail and no real other weapon options (compare this to Castlevania DS games and it's inadequacy is very stark) Even weapons with similarly limited weapon options like Rabi Ribi still make things more interesting by allowing all sorts of crazy fighting-game style combo strings.

in HK, you've peaked once you figure out how to pogo and combo a basic attack with a spell. It is unironically very souls-like in this regard, where your own skill never really grows beyond very basic attack patterns, and you only really have to learn enemy patterns.

>I don't get why Dark Souls itself got popular.
Because it's good, uncompromising, (used to be) unique and it's easy to copy. It also didn't become a giant hit instantly.
>>
>>719800706
You forgot that it's extremely simple in its core systems. Input complexity is a huge barrier for a lot of normalfags, look at how much QCF breaks people who don't play fighting games or how people who don't play CAGs rarely use more than the basic string.
Most normalfags prefer "builds" that do one thing in slightly different ways over one character who can do many different things because they don't use most of the in-game systems anyway.
More normalfags would play a fighting game where every character plays more or less the same with no special moves where they can choose between 2% more health or 5% walk speed.
>>
>>719795203
It's called delaying your finished expansion for seven years.
>>
>>719795501
Casual exploration slop with Souls systems haphazardously thrown in in because it makes the game seem darker and more mature than it really is. It's a shallow pretty game which draws in pretentious faggots. It's one of the most by the numbers "throw it in because it's trendy" type of soulless indie games.
>>
>>719798060
DS was the first game in years of casualization and consolisation that didn't treat the player like an idiot.
No wasting your time with hour long intros, tutorial or lore dump text boxes
Just a game, that is decently challenging with some player choice freedom.
>>
>>719801574
>look at how much QCF breaks people who don't play fighting games
That's because not many games outside of FGs force players to use any motion inputs, even simple ones. If they'd play them as kids even most midwits wouldn't have much problem with them. Remember that actual casuals feel the same about any typical controls. Many adults are very lazy.
>More normalfags would play a fighting game where every character plays more or less the same with no special moves where they can choose between 2% more health or 5% walk speed.
I disagree, normalfags care about playing as "cool characters" more than anything, that's why fighting games have been overshadowed by MOBAs and hero shooters.
