What is your honest opinion on Pokemon Mystery Dungeon?

A wonderful thing. Weird how half the development team have basically never made a game that wasn't PMD. Adds to its unique flair.
>>

Shiren is better
>>
Probably the best pokemon game. Sure fucking beats wandering around and doing piss easy battles with braindead trainers.

Introducing a dungeon crawler to 10 year old kids is like making them learn calculus at 2nd grade
>>
>>719821098
cool games and also the entrance to a direct pipeline connection to the depths of the furry fandom for countless kids
>>
>>719821098
rescue team is pretty good
explorers improves on pretty much everything rescue team did, but doesn't make it obsolete
never played gates or super, i heard they were babbyfied though
from what i played of dx it seemed fine, cutting the friend zones was unforgivable though, iirc the music was also worse compared to the originals
>>
>>719821706
Both Gates and Super have incredible soundtracks and stories. Super is my favorite.
>>
I like it. not my favorite dungeon game but still good
>>
>>719821706
Super is the hardest one, tho
Has jack shit for postgame, though, so Explorers is still the superior one

>Super
>Incredible story
Shit reads like a fucking deviantart fanfic by the end and has an incredibly uninspired "twist" that you will see coming from a mile away if you played the previous games. Super also shoots itself in the foot in the 2nd half of the game when you leave for the city by just throwing away most of the previously established characters in favor of a new cast who are one-dimensional and boring in comparison. It's not like the stories of RT, Explorers or Gates are perfect by any means, but they are MILES better than Super's. And don't get me started on how shit the gameplay of Super is in comparison to the previous entries

gates and everything after is bad
you can really tell that a lot of the key people who shaped the games fucked off, its clear they just don't understand the appeal of pmd

first few games are amazing though.
>>
>>719821706
the mechanics changes to dx just makes it worse than the originals
its baffling how badly they fucked up a remake
>>
>>719821773
super's story is easily the worst in the series.
>>
>>719821498
>Sure fucking beats wandering around and doing piss easy battles with braindead trainers.
but that's exactly how this game plays until the postgame
>>
the fact these games havent gotten OST releases is fucking criminal
>>
>>719821098
It was good up until like Explorers of Time/Darkness and Sky(?) but then rapidly shit the bed. so bad they went back and tried to remake the first game with the shitty nu-pokemon aesthetic instead of just porting it with it's timelessly simple graphics.
>>
Best games of the franchise. More fun and beats the mainline games by a mile.
Explorers>Super>Rescue Team>>>Gates
>>719826723
How so? The Rare skills turned the IQ grind of having one supersoldier into one skill per pokemon certainly changed the balance, but the franchise is attempting to balance with more focus on the team rather than a 1 man party. IQ skills took too long to farm up IMO and I only really ever raised 1 Pokmeon to get max IQ before I beat the post game on DS.
I don't like how they changed the Basic Attack but at least with how common PP items are, the PP Rare quality skills, and the wands sort of necessitate such a change.
>>
>>719821098
It's shit.
>>

>>719827680
>Complete national dex
>back to 99 floor dungeons and actual challenges
>fixes many of the mechanical fuckups Gates tried to introduce
>vastly expands on the world, worldbuilding, and lore of different continents
I didn't stutter. Long campaign with very long intro tutorial chapter, the subpar story, and the "one recruit per species" are my only complaints.
>>
>>719828007
Ignore him, it's just some autism who hates Super because it hurt his comfort characters.
>>
>>719828007
Being batter than Gates isn't an achievement and having tons of dogshit is worse than just having dogshit. The entire mechanical changes suck the life out of the game too. It sapped my desire to even play this franchise anymore and now I just reminisce about when it didn't suck.
>>
When does this game get good and get momentum? I always lose interest like an hour or two in and restart it later. I’m sure it’s a good game I just don’t know when it “starts” because it’s an RPG game. I remember beating gengar or hypno or whatever the hell in an hour in so I didn’t get that far at all. I’ve heard it gets very challenging later.
>>
>>719828434
Are you playing the original (GBA/DS?)
>>
>>719827338
yeah IQ was pretty bad to grind up
having all tactics unlocked at the start without iq requirements was nice, I guess, even if most people rarely use anything but the default
I never understood people who said basic attacks were useless in the original games when the remake released, it felt like they had never even played them as you would regularly use basic attacks, but it isn't the biggest deal.
the largest issues were how much skills were changed and the focus on them, the game was a lot lower power level compared to the remake, if you wanted to really delete a boss you needed to link skills and it would shred your PP, making a big damage dealer required pretty much dedicating the entire moveset to it
move leveling in general is bad
wands were not done well
pushing was retarded and incredibly exploitable
hunger changes were dumb for many of the longer dungeons
changes to accuracy and speed trivializing bosses is good but items still trivialize them and the characters power level has massively increased so its kind of irrelevant anyway

so much of the game was just made significantly worse in the remake

personally I never really thought the gameplay revolved around making one really strong pokemon and when I played I usually had at least 1 and often 2 other pokemon supporting a main damage dealer, especially pokemon who would use long ranged attacks to clear out rooms for you and good aoe attacks.
the fact you could swap who you were playing in 3 button clicks and then back made it pretty silly to only use pokemon imo. Don't think I ever saw anyone just using a single pokemon except in the challenge dungeons where you only use one, but that is a completely different story.

>>719827608
dx
it was a very poorly done remake
>>
>>719828945
>I never understood people who said basic attacks were useless in the original games when the remake released
I have never met one of these people. For the best I suppose because that's flat out wrong. I don't recall if it was just based on your physical attack but the fact is that was your primary PP management tool. Taking advantage of healing off battles you got into with your basic attacks was really important.
I think pre-end bosses, aside from Mankey and Rayquaza, were overall easier intentionally. I don't have to like it but the fact that all dungeons before Magma Caverns giving you a natural XRay Specs makes that a tad obvious. But the use of Megas and the extra hazards they added to many of the bosses did not feel like they went down that easily. I think having a full squad of NPCs to tank hits is a much more viable strategy than it was before, but otherwise I'm not sure I agree.
>pushing was retarded and incredibly exploitable
and that's a good thing. Your role playing as a team, your team shouldn't ever get in your way, and with ghosts passing through walls I need to be able to control the squad.
>changes to accuracy and speed
Was wonky and I'm not sure why they did that. Moves hitting twice instead of the natty speed boost for example with Chlorophyll, I can live with but I wonder what they were trying to fix that they didn't just keep busted.
>hunger changes were dumb for many of the longer dungeons
remind me about this, all I recall was that the Rare Skills made surviving from starving in long dungeons really easy and that because I can swap between 3 party members on a full team I'm effectively having 3 stomachs, but didn't Super do that too?
>>
>>719829767
>basic attacks
its was pretty much only a thing around when the game launched, but it was the "normal" opinion, people would just deny any criticism on removing them as how they were useless, you can look at online discussion around the time of the launch and see it, was crazy to me.
>pushing
pushing allies is fine, its definitely stronger than swapping, but its not that big of a deal
pushing enemies was very exploitable and let you basically just force enemies to be outnumbered in many situations and made corridors of enemies far less dangerous.
together pushing is just very strong and made the game significantly easier if you were willing to exploit it, especially in the lvl 1 (or lvl 5 in this game) challenge dungeons
>accuracy speed
yeah I wasn't a fan of how strong they were in the originals so I like that they are toned down
not everything was a change for the negative
>hunger
the original also had swapping to have more bellies
the main difference was how long belly lasts, what gives it, and being able to increase it.
the fixed belly of 100, instead of being able to increase the max for that dungeon, which made extra food you didn't have space for wasted far less and made management far easier.
how long each belly lasts, each belly was 10 steps (so 0.10 a step) in blue/red, while you lose 0.15 belly a step in dx, which is a 50% increase in belly usage.
add in that blue/red had far more smaller belly restoration options, with every seed restoring 5 belly vs 2 in dx
dx also drains more health while at 0 belly (1 vs 3)

combine all this with the lowered passive health regeneration and it very much changes the game

it pretty much makes the tight belt even stronger, where before it was a strong item but you could lose a good held item, now its even more powerful.
add in the mega evolution/awakening and the game is far more about just annihilating your opponents before they even hit you and reduces viable strategies.
>>
>>719830781
to add about the belly changes and "explain" them, super had the same belly system, but also had far shorter dungeons and far more plentiful apples.
they basically wholesale used it in dx without changing dungeon length or food amounts from the original

so they basically just made it much more scarce.... for no real reason, the game basically took a lot of what super had done and remade blue/red using its mechanics and didn't really adjust them to how that game was built

PMD is the only reason I’m still invested in Pokemon. The main stories are generally too easy but the postgame in Rescue Team and Explorers fucking rocks

I spent like 500 hours in PMD Blue Rescue team on the DS and I've never beaten one of those 99 floor challenge dungeon the ones where you are set to level 1 or there was ones where you had no items right? because the enemies scaled really badly and they always had at least 1 type of super pokemon that was much higher level than you and liable to one-shot.

I don't even know what's at the end of those 99 floor challenge dungeons.

Pretty much the best Pokemon experience aside from Rumble. Turn based Pokemon stopped being fun when you got too good, or worse, when you did competitive, because all it turns into is switching into a hit, trying to pull off a fuck you or a mega fuck you.
PMD is probably the only sidegame that introduced mechanics to mainline. Snow and fog weather, jelly beans, fucking scarves might've been the precursor to choice items.
Notice how pokemon became more human-like starting at gen 4+. This is because PMD humanized pokemon so much, players began to insert themselves as them, and shift the popularity towards them. Ninetales got psychic moves starting gen 4, despite not having them prior, because of the events in the game. Eevee was one of the female exclusive starters, and Eevee is now the Pikachu for girls.
Most importantly the raw burning desire to copulate with your partner forget your humanity.
>>
I can't remember which one it was, but one of the ds ones was my favorite growing up, probably the reason I like rogue likes now. i wonder if i was given splatoon (or whatever fps was marketed to children and appeared on the ds lite) whether i would be obsessed with counterstrike or something.
>>
>>719821098
story, atmosphere, soundtrack, and worldbuilding are great. everything goes to shit in the post-game though (partner turns into soulless NPC, 99-floor dungeons are a chore, lv 1/lv 5 dungeons sre full of unfair bullshit like overleveled enemies, etc.)
gameplay is passable but it simply doesn't work with a party. constant menuing with AI behavior (prioritize movement, item master, etc.), held items, toggling moves and IQ skills, etc. not to mention how fucking annoying the post-game is with checking every tile for traps and the pains you have to go to to stop the retarded computer from killing itself on traps, even if they're visible
>>
I want to have violent, messy sex with Gardevoir and Medicham while Gengar watches
>>
>>719841548
to be fair, some elements of the first 2 games need to go. basic attacks have no reason to exist when you have stacks of 99 throwable items. more frequent max elixirs to make up for its removal. in lv 1 dungeons you're gonna prefer using moves over normal attacks
>the IQ grind takes forever
>>
>>719844750
Throwable items had set damage no? Basic attacks were stronger past a certain point.
>>
>>719821098
On one hand the premise and gameplay are more fun than they have any right to be, on the other I wished it took more cues from roguelikes like Nethack to make the rooms and dungeon layouts have more variety than literal Rogue.

>>
>>719849729
Pokemon is no longer a series for gamers, it’s a series for normies, and they love their mobileslop. Would point to pokemon go becoming a worldwide phenomenon as the main catalyst to this, showing there’s more money to be made with phone games over full-blow console games which, evidently, is true

doesn't make TPC enough monies and muh development time and cost for small indie studio :^(
same reason they don't use their literal mountains of liquidity to expand the vidya teams and make truly godly games, because that would take more money when they can just work tiny teams to death
their profits mostly coming from merchandising is the issue, the games are just an extra bonus on top for them
>>
I guess I should have played it as a kid because I genuinely have no idea what's so great about these games. I don't care how good the story is when the gameplay is just walking from square room to square room hitting A. Played the first 10 hours of Explorers of Sky and that's all it is. Ffs you can't even build a party, just use two unevolved shillmons with trash moves and hope you get something cool that wants to be your third wheel.
From a gameplay perspective the mainline series is vastly superior.
>>
>>719849729
>People loved them, some even more than the mainline games
Unironically this. Can’t let people get an idea of what a truly good pokemon game is, lest they begin to reject the mainline games, so gamefreak veto anything that can rival them and hurt their fee-fee’s
>>719850737
Aren’t all of them done by outside studio’s? It’s no “small indie company” problem since all they do is just pay someone else to do it. Like you said they got a shit ton of liquid cash, all they gotta do is toss it to a studio and let them make some kino
>>
>>719841642
Admittedly its been a few years since i played Super so i don't remember stuff perfectly, but iirc the first half of the game takes place in a school setting, where the cast consists of you and all you and your partner + classmates + the school staff. Then the 2nd half of the game has you and your partner leave for the city where everybody in the school except for i think one or two of them never gets any screentime again. In the city you join the Expedition Society, and i dont remember much about them because again, most of the characters are one-note and uninteresting, and never receive any development. Most of them just take up screentime for unfunny jokes that add nothing (looking at you, Swirlix)
>>
This game is peak mystery dungeon if you make your own parties in the end game and get really creative with movesets and item useage. Had fun using so many mons that are useless in the mainline games' metagame but good in this one like Dunsparce and Sunflora. Also it was bizarrehow the hitmon line were like the weakest pokemon in the game.

On the other hand I had a miserable time with explorers because I picked phanpy and its movepool is trash.
>>
great series
stories are always fun, the friendships are nice
the gameplay is solid
the options of pokemon to recruit is good
>>
>>719851171
Doesn't sound like you really got the game. Its an old school sub genre of rpgs that wasn't really that popular or well known to most kids at the time called rouge-likes(or however the fuck you spell it). Its essentially like a dungeon crawler but without the random encounters. This alone would have zoomers jumping for joy as they can't turn random encounters and turn base games. If you've seen or played more of them then you probably understand the game better and become an elitist and start naming better rouge-likes

>Ffs you can't even build a party, just use two unevolved shillmons with trash moves and hope you get something cool that wants to be your third wheel.
Post game is when you get to be free and do whatever. At least up until Skies, haven't played the later games. It kind of does suck it takes that long but its not that big of a deal and lets you be creative with what you got. I remember picking one of the worst starters and having a hard a balls time because my main pokemon couldn't do jack shit because of his shit pool move until post game and had to always rely on my partner to hard carry me. Had to be extra cautious and play differently but still had a great time.

Plus we live in an age where you can mod the games so its even less of a deal than before
>>
>>719821098

I like them a lot. And I wish there were more mystery dungeon games with actual companions. But stuff like Guided Fate Paradox and Azure Dreams never had sequels. Good news is that there's some autist making an freeware version and I hope others will take it and make their own MD games with it.
