There's absolutely no way that Snake can possibly see him, but it's not even the only time in the game that he remarks on visual cues. It's never properly explained, much like how Codec calls will carry on calmly for minutes at a time while Snake is supposedly in the middle of combat. But even then they don't have the same speech patterns, so I'd sus it out right away. But the thing is he does this as a whim three days before the events of the game to throw them off, he didn't pre-plan it at all.
