You could spend MORE money developing a vita game that was now expected to be console quality for a very small userbase, OR you could put your development money into 3DS, which was a platform with a much bigger install base and lower expectations in terms of presentation.Also, when the 3DS floundered, Nintendo pivoted hard to save it. When the Vita flopped, Sony made one half assed push with the slim model and a shit port of Borderlands 2.Vita is a great piece of hardware and there are some games worth playing on it but it was far too niche. There's a reason Nintendo had to move into the hybrid space. Console and handheld games could no longer exist in separate ecosystems.
