I changed my mind. We must re-form the Tojo Clan.

Heres how to course correct the series:
1. Go back to engine they used before Yakuza 6, every game looks like crap now.
2. Retcon it so the Tojo was never disbanded
3. Drop the turn-based combat
4. Drop all references to Nugget the chicken, as well as any other Western memes, locations and v-tuber characters in general
5. Write a simple, mostly grounded and compelling yakuza crime drama for the main story. Save the wackiness for substories only
6. Have cool, masculine male characters again - not blubbering babies. Shedding a manly tear while screaming the name of your dead aniki is the acceptable limit. Not sobbing uncontrollably while watching a tablet.
7. Go back to a hard J-rock soundtrack, with minimal dubstep
8. Go back to the tight, nicely organized UI of pre-Yakuza 6, before they went all wide and smartphony

Not quite. That's what jap cities look like now. Every game since the very first one has townspeople commenting on how the cities constantly change for the worse and are barely recognizable for someone who returns after a few years. Engine update only pushed RGG to fully rebuild Kamurocho in line with what Kabukicho looks like these days.

Yakuza 4 for example was a very basic, Infernal Affairs-esque police crime drama. People go "le rubber bullets!", but that's still more realistic than whatever the fuck was going on in Infinite Wealth

The mornings have always been their weakest points and every single game has bad looking mornings but JER changed how the lighting system worked which 7 also used. It caused way more things to be blown out and absurdly bright for no reason which is really apparent on Senryo Avenue and Nakamichi since they have lots of white buildings in a line.

6, K2, and JE had reasonable looking mornings, it's that shift in JER onward that makes them look so bad. Hawaii is the best example of how bad mornings look because you're basically looking at the surface of the sun when on the beach sometimes and many areas look like this. The lighting got even worse between 8 and 8G because it's even harsher in 8G.

The lighting is Yokoyama's fault. This year in one of the interviews he said that he's a huge fan of extreme contrast and his team has to repeatedly ask him to tone it down. He's also specifically hiring zoomers who failed to get into the film and video production industry to make the games look more cinematic.

He's the type of guy who would install the most insane ENB presets with crushing blacks and blinding whites. I kind of suspected it after playing 6 because daytime Onomichi looked very good, it's the best dragon engine era location.

Yeah, I think the DE was at its best visually in 6, K2 (Even with the filter), JE, and 7G (Despite being post 7 lighting change) even if the aliasing was horrendous. 8 and 8G are it at its worst while JER, 7, and LJ are fine provided you're at evening or night. 7G was incredible visually, it's easily their best looking game.

7G is no different from 8 or 8G, it has too much contrast. Yes, it looks good at night because of the city lights, but 7G has insane amount of black crush just like 8 and 8G, especially at night.

DE needs a big lighting upgrade. Its remarkable how bad the characters look in shaded areas (very obvious in 8 and 8G). They try to simulate tropical sun in 8 and 8G and thats why they jack up the contrast but the lighting engine just cannot cope with indrect lighting, everything just looks flat and ugly.

I know they're not changing the underlying engine, but you can clearly see a difference when they go from JE to JER onward in terms of games with the lighting since it's more washed out and blown out in the mornings and they stuck with that until around 8 which also had some visual changes in the lighting.
