why didnt 6 face buttons catch on? you wouldnt have to do gay shit like taps vs hold or pushing in the sticks nearly as often
>>
>>719865290
i only haee 5 fingers
>>
>>719865318
just move your thumb one centimeter to the right you geriatric fuck

Blame Sony.
>>

>Sony

So, the Jews. Got it.
>>
>>719865290
you can only REALLY use 2 at a time.
usually one held, one tapped.
yes you could get MORE 2 combos, but usually you're going to be using one of those buttons constantly, for jumping, or running.
honestly, i would rather controllers get more triggers going on.
i can have 4 buttons for a thumb, but each trigger gets its own finger? thats bullshit.
AND my thumbs ALSO doing all the camera work? fucking hell, pick up your game fingers.

but actually im pretty sure someone copywrote more than 4 buttons, which is why shit like the start and select buttons are off on the middle of the controller, to avoid being sued for 6 buttons.
>>
>>719865318
you have four fingers a thumb nigga
>>
>>719865951
Nintendo was there first.
>>
>>719866092
Nintendo 64 controller has 6 face buttons, PS1 has 4.
>>
>>719865290
4 shoulder buttons + 4 face buttons is better and easier to do button combos on than 2 shoulder buttons + 6 face buttons.
>>
>>719866126
SNES has 4. PS1 just copied the SNES controller.
>>
>>719866126
Sony aped the SNES controller. In fact the PlayStation controller is the direct descendant of the SNES controller.

The Xbox controllers are all descendants of the Saturn controller.
>>
>>719866173
...Okay? The PS1 sold more than N64 which had 6 face buttons and came out after SNES. I'm guessing it's massive success lead to the direction of the 4 face buttons being the norm.

Dreamcast actually.

...which was the successor to the Saturn controller.
>>
>>719866092
Nintendo went from 2 to 4 to 6 and then reverted back to 4 when they decided to stop innovating and just push out gimmicky crap. If the shitcube was a good console it would have had 8 face buttons.
>>
>>719866339
>>719866385
and btw the Xbox black came from Saturn as well
>>
>>719866461
And Sega took that from Yamaha when they redesigned the Mark III for the west.

Which is funny cause Genesis/Saturn controllers had godlike d-pad and Dreamcast and Xbox ones were crimes against humanity.
I think Xbox being unable to solve d-pad is a significant factor in its eventual downfall.
>>
>>719866513
Everything is a remix.
>>
>>719865290
Simple games only need a few buttons. Throw a normie a SNES controller and they would spend more time looking at the controller asking you what each button does.
The Genesis is nothing more than a Sonic and sportsball machine.

Xbox controller just combined both these designs and added a second stick.

Six face button layout from Saturn + VMU memory cards from Dreamcast
>>
>>719866582
>Simple games only need a few buttons.
no one makes those anymore tho lol
>>
>>719866385
Less buttons, shittier dpad, shitter analog stick.
Quite the succesor.
>>
>>719866742
The Dreamcast would have been a success if they used the design of the Saturn 3D pad and just added a VMU port.
>>
>>719866742
Hall effect stick was cool tho

too much distance between A and C and the intuitive place to keep your thumb at is A

I love using mine for certain game though but it's a lot more contextual than a regular button layout

Both Xbox controllers solved this problem in the early 2000s.

Six button controllers need to come back now.
>>
>>719866775
Changing the controller on the Dreamcast would not have changed its fate
>>
>>719867150
Alright, add a DVD player and it will win.
>>
>>719867150
It just came out too early. They should have launched in 2000 a little after Sony. It would have given the Saturn more room to breathe too.

Behold, the 8 facebutton Gamecube controller.
>>
>>719866537
This and the Wii U Pro Controller are the last really legitimately good first party controllers. What went wrong?
>>
>>719867674
Production costs? New injection molds are not cheap, QA costs money, assembly costs money you see the pattern.
>>
>>719865290
You do not need more than 4 buttons on the face. What controllers trully need is 4 buttons on the back, two on each side.
>>
>>719865290
idk, but I use a fightpad for most games
>>

What happened to your other hand?

no?
did you ever actually have this?
B and C are much more comfortable
>>
This is my idea the Buttons Controller please fund it

you're missing the 2 extra thumpads you control with your dick and desk respectively
>>

because it SUCKS ASS, retard
>>
>>719866385
why couldnt sega ever make a non retarded controller ever?
>>
>>719870046
a spider designed this
>>
because bumpers made it possible to use modifiers more easily, so 6 buttons became 4 and was easier to design your game around.
>>
>>719865290
Use an arcade stick nigga
>>
it's not like the other two face buttons went away, they were just moved to the top to compliment the triggers. seriously every controller I'm aware of that has this many buttons on its design in general either has four face buttons and four shoulder buttons or six face buttons and two shoulder buttons.
as for why I'm assuming it was tested and market researched into oblivion that it was considered more ergonomic or some shit.
>>
>>719870783
>as for why I'm assuming it was tested and market researched into oblivion that it was considered more ergonomic or some shit.
Nope it's because controllers only started to exist as bootleg versions of arcade sticks. The dpad and control stick are ghetto low cost knockoffs of the arcade lever. If cost wasnt a factor every controller until gen7 would have been an arcade stick by default. But then the dual sticks introduced in gen6 started to become something games rely on and now controllers are part of the walled garden DRM ecosystem.
>>
>>719865290
six face buttons are retarded.
you have one thumb, why make it do all the work?
no surprise that nintendo mogged sega out of the industry.
>>
>>719871110
idk why companies at the time seemingly thought 6 buttons had to come at the expense of shoulder buttons
you could have 6 buttons and also have both bumpers and triggers, what the fuck is stopping you
>>
what about 4 buttons and a button in middle

im still mad we didn't get this
>>
>>719871930
but they did release it
>>
>>719872078
yeah but the sticks got gimped too hard, i should have specified. they're more like mobile handheld ones instead of having a more comfortable range of motions
>>
>>719872078
No they didn't. They released a significantly downgraded version with shitty Joycon style joysticks and non-analog triggers (so it can't even actually fucking work as a 3D Pad replacement).
>>
>>719865290
>start and mode buttons are at the bottom edge of the controller
What in god's name possessed them to do this?
>>
>>719872878
The version I own uses that little button above X, Y, and Z as Start and has a Mode button on its right shoulder, so I guess even the manufacturers aren’t sure.
Great controller btw. It’s a little thicker than the 3-button.
>>
>I only hab five fingers bwo that’s too many buddens
/v/ is so fucking bad at video games
>>
>>719870210
The Sega Saturn 3D pad is excellent though with the best analog stick AND d-pad in one controller. It lacks rumble support like the Dualshock and N64 controller but it's a worthwhile tradeoff.
The Dreamcast controller traded the good analog stick and d-pad for shit ones and lost two face buttons, probably due to cost cutting measures. The VMU and rumble aren't remotely enough to make up for it. Controller screens and rumble are nice to haves, good controls are must haves.
>>
No genesis game used more than 2 buttons
>>

Mortal Kombat

Street Fighter 2, Alien Soldier, the Streets of Rage games and 32x DOOM, just off the top of my head.

>>
>>719870210
You would think the Saturn 3D pad is awkward to use, but it’s awesome. It’s better than the Dreamcast controller.
>>
>>719875380
I fail to see the problem. My thumb rests over the second buttons and can pretty easily hit all six with very little movement.
Hitting B while holding A or C while holding B also isn’t hard to do. I suspect people look at controllers that don’t use the diamond layout and just assume that kinda if input is harder to pull off when it just isn’t.
