We get it dude, you made literally one indie game that critics liked 15 years ago. >>719877732He is right to some extent. The open world might as well not exist. To make open world appealing, you should be able to interact with it. There is nothing you can interact in the open world in ER in a broader sense. Take TES as an example, you can interact with nearly everything but in ER, you just click on shiny stuff.

>>719877732Kind of right, actually, the creation and success of Nightreign proves it. Nightreign took out all the tedium and just makes you play a boss rush co-op mode, which is what people enjoy the most from the rollslop fromsoft games. Even hardcore fromsoft fans felt like elden ring was just too big of a map with not much going on once you take the initial release hype away. It's also why the DLC got a lot of backlash: the way they wanted to force you to explore the map was making a DLC area exclusive damage/defense buff system by collecting skibidi fragments which no one liked to do. Otherwise there's not much else to do other than collect the new weapons and spells but not anything related to gameplay or the map, it's just mindless horse riding until you get new loot to try out. Then you once again go for a boss rush. This guys is a fucking faggot for sure, but he isn't wrong. Just because I don't like him doesn't mean this one particular thing he said is wrong, ya know.
I meanhe is rightgame might as well be a bossrush, all the walking inbetween bosses is just vapid filler with nothing that would challenge the player
>>719877732>renowedDidn't he try to re release Braid and only like 40 people bought it?
He's not entirely wrong. There is an intended path through the world that takes you through a (sort of) narrative, but everything else in the world just kind of is there to be found by the player, more often than not without any rhyme or reason as to why it is there.
>>719878046
>>719879345>>719879345A handful of my friends had this criticism when the game first launched, and it never made sense to me. For example, one friend pointed out that he was disappointed they reused the Night's Cavalry so many times, and I couldn't think of a reason why that would be disappointing. He told me, it's the same guy over and over again, and I said, yeah, but that happens all throughout the game. He said, well, they shouldn't do that for bosses though. And I was like ... okay, so if an enemy is repeated, it's fine, but if an enemy is repeated and has a health bar at the bottom of the screen, it's unacceptable? I think the root of the problem is that he just didn't like fighting the Night's Cavalry, which is a totally acceptable position. Finally, I saved this until last because it's not really my main point, but the Night's Cavalry in particular being repeated makes sense lore-wise.
>>719877732Elden ring is a game about exploration that rewards you whit cool boss fights for exploring. You also get like weapons and stuff from the boss fights but the Boss fights by themself are their own reward.

The way they utilized it, built it, stylized it, structured it and populated it, including the game mechanics themself and it's whole point. The nature of "open world" idea is an impossibly, just like a space game. If you really want "meaningful" open world it simply impossible, so what you do is reduce it to what is manageable, and what is manageable, or rather a compromise, is exactly what you see in majority of open world games, a mostly shallow theme park. Someone like Rockstar are the only lucky and smart enough to not only have this opportunity, but to utilize it well, and that's why they along with fromsoft are the only few companies left that still making games that don't suck major dick.

The only per-requisite for a meaningful open world is that the massive amount of space is actually utilized in proportion to it's size. And it doesn't require a massive budget to do. i.e. >Dragon's Dogma: Has Elden Ring-esque enemy placement, but the world and enemies are given meaning through the escort quests, limited carry weight, and the day/night system acting as a timer. >Elden Ring: you have a horse that can run past everything with zero skill requirement. checkpoints everywhere. no punishment for bad routing/being slow.

>>719877732The biggest problem with Elden Ring is that it is the most creatively bankrupt possible version of "Dark Souls: Open World Edition" that Miyazaki could have made. There are no towns, villages, human encampments or otherwise any sentient things worth ruling over in this game where the main objective is ruling the world. I know the instinctual cry of Soulslurpers here is 'muh Skyrim' as if Skyrim invented towns in RPGs, but it really does shatter immersion in this case. If Fromsoft was less pozzed, they could have made a story about rescuing a princess, but we'll never get that from the A/B bodytype company now because EVERYTHING has to be some fucking will to power story even in the apocalypse, apparently.None of the bosses interact with the open world in any interesting ways whatsoever. There are no bosses who roam, no bosses who stalk you, no bosses you have to hunt, no bosses who flee, no bosses who attempt to ensnare you by feigning being NPCs, or anything. In this game all about exploration, somehow, every fight is just a completely standard brawl in a fog wall arena. The fact that they have no good ideas for difficulty left so all of them need to have cartoonishly delayed attack animations just to fuck with the player is icing on the slop cake.Elden Ring is just quantity over quality, the game.

>>719877732>Is that.... A DIFFICULTY SELECT SCREEN???>I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEAAAANS>JUST LET ME PLAY THE GAME
>>719901829Breath of the Wild is like if Hyrule Field was an entire game. The game is totally empty, just a large grass field. Compare it to a game like skyrim with breathtaking mountain vistas, glaciers, iridescent caves...etc
>>719901829>this one game has DESIGN>this other game just like it has no DESIGN>why?>because I said so..big brain take
>719879635
>>719878127It’s also the only good part of the game
>>719902086Vistas, really? That's not what's being discussed here.Zelda has oceans and lakes and islands you can sail too, mountains you can can actually climb and freeze in, deserts and sand storms you can get lost in, places you can glide toEverything you mentioned in Skyrim is just for show, it's just a different coat of paint on the enviroment it doesn't do anything. Yes mountains in Skyrim look better than the ones in Zelda but i prefer the one with snow physics and survival mechanics.
>>719899496>>719902487>No argument
>>719902083but he is right. difficulty selections are retarded. how is the player supposed to know what difficulty will be fitting for him in a game he has played for zero minutes?? it's a completely ass backwards custom to force an impactful choice with NO information. RPG character creators also often fall in this category of game design sin. you're asking me to assign a bunch of numbers to skills for my character when I am completely unfamiliar with what any of them mean. and then devs will complain that gamers, quote, "optimize the fun out of muh game" by looking shit up on wikis and such. the alternative to doing that is rolling an unplayable character and finding out after an hour of unskippable story bullshit and handholdy tutorials. you finally run into some REAL enemies and whoops, turns out the things you put your points in weren't playtested by anyone and are virtually impossible to win with. shit game design.
>>719902675see >>719900730 for my argument. The world doesn't mesh with the gameplay whatsoever. I didn't even mention the total lack of any traversal mechanics, which is especially egregious in an open world game.
>>719899475>But this gameAs I mentioned, one thing is a large map, the other is the nature of the game. Dragons dogma focus is on quest, while eldenring is in combat. A better comparison will be Skyrim for dragons dogma. Not many people compare eldenring to Skyrim though because, obviously, the nature of games are different. Fromsoft have absolutely no reason to turn their actions adventure into a single player MMO, but what they do have a reason for is to expand on the arguably sole reason why the darksouls franchise is so famous for - the world building, which is exactly what they did.If you are a true fan of dark souls you'd realize that in part what makes it great is the implications the grander world that you inhabit. Dark souls is really a multiple dungeons that taped together. It can be well argued that the reason for this is not necessary a inherent design choose but a simple limitation. That's where the skybox comes in. It implied that these dungeons are in a certain place of are, but unfortunately, the "area" it self where the dungeon is inaccessible, rightfully so, since it be impossible to build it to the scale, but also it's mostly empty regardless. What elden ring has try to achieve here is to put those isolated dungeons that you run around in darksouls in actual world and not just skybox, giving a fuller picture of the world it self. In truth, even eldenring is puny really, the darksouls world is so massive that just limgrave it self should've been the size of the whole game, if we really want to deliver the scale, but again as I said it simply impossible, so you compensate.Main point here being, those games are completely different, and in the case of fromsoft, most people don't even understand why they like them, but fromsoft thankfully does and stands behind it's vision firmly. So comparing them like that is disingenuous and what eldenring did is really outstanding for what their true goal is.
>>719877732>Map has stuff in it.This truth nuke sure Blow.
>>719903213No buildings, no people, just a kind of empty void with soulless strange architecture based on a japanese misunderstanding of the western style
>>719903167>giant open empty fields makes the world building betterNo, they dont. They are there to pad out play time.
>>719877732He looks like he should be escorting a group of Ecologists through the Red Forest.
>>719903802Those are the words of a broken individual who can't see right from wrong anymore.
>>719891586>unprecedented scale???For From maybe, but it's nowhere near the largest games ever made.
>>719904132Those are the words from an individual who cant accept that Elden Ring is a boring, padded game and writes essays to cope with this fact.
I'm putting together a team...
>>719877954>Elden Ring has the greatest handcrafted map ever made in a game, and for all its size, it is also incredibly intricate and detailed.ever been to night city?
"huge map full of a bunch of bosses" is a design though.
>>719877954>Elden Ring has the greatest handcrafted map ever made in a gameThere's glazing and then there's whatever the fuck this is, like SSJ3 glazing, god damn son.
>>719904570Right back at you, I wrote an essay stating every point why it's great in design and execution, while all you say its... "Le boring just because". Maybe, just maybe the problem here is you and your subpar sense of taste, not that it's anyone's problem.
>>719903167NTA and honestly a pretty good take, however I would argue that while the open world in Elden Ring does create a successful sense of space between the more traditional Souls game level design, I wouldn't consider it at least in it's current state necessarily a benefit to that formula. Part of the reason why the majority opinion for Elden Ring is that your first play-through is your best play-through is that you still have a sense of discovery to make the overworld engaging. Most people went out of their way to try to find every little dungeon they could find because they wanted to know just what exactly was around what corner and what cool drop came from where. Once you lose that sense of discovery (and thus, the need or desire to explore every cave you find when you know which ones drop shit you dont care about and which ones do) that same level of magic that was in your first run just isn't there. To me, it's part of the reason why randomizes got so popular with Elden Ring because it allows players to at least partially replicate that first play experience. Once that sense of discovery is lost, what's left of the open world is nothing more but an incredibly barren and most importantly - static game world that starts to become nothing more but background noise to the player, outside of the few that still love finding cliffs to take screenshots from. It just means that if Fromsoft has the stomach to continue producing open world souls games that they put in the work to start making their open worlds more dynamic and reactive to players, as of right now the open world of Elden Ring is less reactive and dynamic than even a relic like Morrowind.
>>719877732https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSXofLK5hFQYOU JUST WALK AROUND JUMPING ON SHITHe's still right though unironically just like the guy who coined Zanzibart. Elden Ring's core design is pure slop and is a parody of Demon/Dark Souls
