Only HDDs that have failed me I have moved a lot. Portable HDDs were the biggest meme of all time.
i've been using the same hdd for over 10 years in my gaming pc and it's gone from my boot drive to my games drive to now a storage drive for game captures and a download location. no issues at all aside from it being slow to initially load some folders. also been using an external pocket drive with my xbox since 2015 which is now plugged into my xbox series x and no issues with that either. i've been thinking of replacing my pc hdd with another nvme but i just can't motivate myself to buy it when everything works fine currently. but famous last words right.
>>719881971Overall I have about 5-7 TB of HDDs in my house, might as well use them to store some data.Just old HDDs that have been replaced, No pint in throwing them away of course.
>>719882892There's a 1TB seagate in my computer that's from the Obama administration.
I have a 120gb hdd from 2004 that's still working great, i put it into my phat ps2 and installed freehddboot on it and around 20 games. good shite.

>>719884431that's a meme. new games on a hdd might load slower but once everything is loaded they run the same.

The anons here keep saying their decade old HDDs work fine is due to these protocols, in reality their HDDs are definitely heavily degraded. >>719885690>cold storageThis is an even worse idea. SD cards need to be regularly powered up. HDDs handle cold storage really well.

If you lost all your games one day you'd realise the next week that it doesn't matter at all. You can download any game in 1 hour in the first world
>>719881971HDDs are fine for older/lowspec games or storing games to move to an SSD later if you have slow internet.Newer more demanding games, especially open world games, will struggle to run off of an HDD. Or at the very least you'll have really long load times.

>>719887435>if I had torx screwdriverneed a bit more than that

>>719887587Yes it does. Information not being exposed to the user and the manufacturer being completely in charge of black box maintenance of the card without verifiable data to the user alone makes HDD protocols much superior since they are based on verifiable data given out by the HDD itself. SD cards can fail for ages and you will never know. SMART is a big factor for why HDDs are so reliable for storage. Improving a system always starts with requesting reliable data.

Oh cool a storage threadHey I have an issue, whenever I play a game and it need to load the next match, there's like a 50/50 chance it will make the SSD it's installed to spin up to 100% usage and shit up the pc. The only way to fix it so far is to hard reset the PC.I've installed CrystalDisk but it won't recognize 2 out of my 3 drives (one of them being the SSD in question)is there anything I can do? >>719887863Can't find the article, but Google said that all their smart data is practically useless and most failures were not detected by SMART.You want reliable data? You get a redundant storage setup. Relying on shitty diagnostic data is retarded.
>>719888330SSDs don't spin, they are SOLID state drives. How large is your RAM? Sounds to me like you don't have enough RAM and your system might have created virtual ram on your SSD.

If you don't have a server all backup strategies kinda suck for external drives. I regularly fail to make my 1 month and 3 month backups due to simply lack of discipline. At least I have now a shutdown script so every time my computer shuts down at least the most important data gets backed up to clouds and internal HDDs.

I have a 1tb drive my boot and os are on and a 2tb drive for media, both nvme. I want to organize my files and applications better. I want to store all my regular media (videos, music, maybe LORAs and models) on the 2tb and local applications, documents, and general build files on the local drive. Where should I store my vidya? G!mes that take like 30GB, games I may want to uninstall with minimal disk cleaning (I know defragmenting is done automatically now, but for organizational purposes). Should I throw them into the 2tb as well? I know nvmes have a really low response time so I'm not worried about that.
