New to me? Yeah, I try to keep my palette fresh. New to existing? Not as much as I wish. I just don't know many things that grab me that aren't like a decade old. The only game that I played from this year is Contract Rush DX. It's Ok so far.

You guys may be a bit stuck up, but you’re awesome for supporting indie devs that dont have big audiences. These games deserve a chance. I got too much stuff on my plate right now, but I try to find obscure stuff when I can. As a developer I try to study different genres of games to see what people find and interesting and why, so I like to play things out of my comfort zone to see what makes them tick. So many games to play, so little time. I ought to be playing less and developing more, but it’s all for “research” right guys? Its heartwarming to see anons willing to take a chance on experimental games. Im sure you guys are playing some neat stuff but you ought to try and recommend the most interesting ones you find.

Looks pretty similar to the game where a tanuki is a deliveryman and has a bmx bike. You might like it. It's also sort of Tony hawk inspired, but with bike tricks instead of skateboard tricks.

I had a friend like that who acted like an average /v/edditor and was super elitist about obscure vidya. I enjoyed him calling me normalnigger cattle because I knew he was just too autistic to express himself in a normal way and he could recommend some really good vidya. He sometimes had a meltie because I was better at vidya for example he raved about Alien Soldier but couldn't finish it and when I did he called me a secondary and said I got lucky and cheesed the game not that the game can be cheesed afaik. Good times. Unfortunately he succumbed to a bad case of alcoholism.
>>
>>719937902
We do have a bit of overlap, I played the children of the Sun demo, but it didn't make the cut for full acquisition. I think that is the case for night loops and And Roger as well. I have 500 hours in Hitman, it's my #2 most played after Stardew Valley.

One time I saw a poster on here sharing his steam profile and asking for friends. I checked out his wishlist and it turns out the guy has practically identical taste to me, with one exception. Every so often I browse his wishlist and can find obscure game's tailored to me. You just have to ignore so the my little pony games, which, surprisingly, is not a small number.

almost might have been worth being his friend, actually. He doesn't know I stalk him still.
>>
>>719938610
Oof good thing I stopped drinking. I also play single player only. No one can be better than me if they can't play.
>>
>>719938717
You really just need to take a look at reviews for an obscure game to find some people who play them a lot. Then you can check their profiles to find more games. There's surprisingly a lot of people like that.

play the demo, its not a super dark story and the setting itself is really comfy, im not far enough to tell you how bad it gets but it feels more like a candle slowly burning out rather than a fully fledged doomed postapocalyptic nightmare if that makes any sense
>>
>>719939517
Fuck if I know, man, taste is kind of a subjective thing and games aren't like books or movies, I can knock off those pretty easily in a few hours but games are a much larger time investment than a typical book or movie.

From that screenshot, the only games I have actually beaten are Deep Sleep: Labyrinth of the Forsaken, Trauma: Broken Paradise, The Drifter, Last Report and Undermine 2. But Undermine 2 was early access it might not count as "beating".

Still 5 games in about a month is not a bad number. So you could consider the ones that drew me in enough to play the whole thing to be "the best". I suspect Siren's Well will be really good but I have to play the first two games in the trilogy before I can get there.

I don't have a lot of time so I don't really play obscure games but I also don't wait for others to tell me what to play. I learned what type of games I like a long time ago so I stick to those genres mostly. This year I've played
>Rogue Trader
>Jump King Quest
>Final Fantasy 1-4
>Tony Hawk 3+4
>UFO 50
>Life Is Strange Double Exposure
and I'm currently playing Lost Records Bloom and Rage.
I've enjoyed every game I've played this year.

Actually my current indie of the year. It's short and cheap, so you don't lose much, even if you don't like it. In fact, you could even refund after finishing easily. Fun fact: the dev is a Japenese Christian.

This one is short, too, but it's free. Note that it's rather dark and depressing. I know that some people can't play games like that. I say "play", but it's mostly "read".

Webm related. Only in Japanese and Chinese (different store pages). It's a free prologue. A kind of RPG/puzzle game where you play around with words. There's a full, paid version available, but it's pretty expensive, so I haven't played it yet.

Playing the games that no one else has is the best. For one, I can talk to the developers whenever I want. I can even insult them and they would still prefer that over radio silence. Seeing your game get released and getting no reviews and no forum posts is the worst.

Even if I go on there and say something like: It doesn't make any goddamn sense that a demon would try to avoid getting sent back to hell, because demons live in hell, so it's not a huge deal for them to get sent there.

The developer will just be like: "wow, this guy actually played all the way to the end."

You sure can't do that with major label games. They never listen to a word anyone says. So yeah, I hang around the games with less than five reviews and stuff like that.

Well, I really liked his previous game, Vaccine: Rebirth, which was the exact same concept but with Resident Evil instead of Metal Gear Solid. That might just be a personal preference thing though. I like Survival Horror over stealth so that might be the only reason why I think his earlier game was superior. Vaccine only managed 21 reviews.

Anyway, Spy Drops is pretty good, I like the slow-mo that plays when you kick people in the head from behind, but I haven't played it very much yet. And actually there's a much more polished version of the concept of "Resident Evil Roguelike" coming out soon. There's actually several but this is the one I'm thinking about right now:

well... I did buy Stardew Valley on launch day but I don't think I bothered to talk to the guy. Then again, even though he's famous now you can still talk to him pretty easily so that doesn't even really count.

I spoke to Manon Gage once, I suppose. She was the lead actress in Immortality but she hasn't exactly found fame past the video game even though she's pretty talented.

One time a game developer used my steam review for that bit of the trailer where you flash quotes quickly from news agencies except he didn't have any of those so he had to use mine. He later took it down though and made a different trailer.

It has AI voice slop in it. It's a very criminal and nasty way to make a game. It should be pulled off Steam for this shit, not praised and bought.
>>
>>719942393
uh oh bros the indie game that didn't crack 100 reviews didn't have a budget for voice actors. Now I think what we should do here is tailor the execution method to a popular fetish so we kill two birds with one stone so to speak because you can't be doing this stuff.
>>
>>719942393
Honestly who cares? You're making the wrong comparison between paid-VA's and AI-VA, when the truth with low budget small team/single dev indie games is that it's a choice between AI-VA and no VA at all.

NTA but I understand his point of view. I do the same with music, I just pick what to listen to from what's popular, what my friends are listening to, and what the algorithm recommends. That's because although I enjoy music in the background I don't care about it THAT much. Sure there's probably some amazing obscure bands and genres I could find if I dedicate a couple of hours every day to listening and filtering through them but I have other things I'm already busy being passionate about. I guess I would be "casual music listener", so that anon is also just a casual video game player which is fine.

In nvidia's control panel (AMD's too, probably) you can set max fps for all or specific programs. Because I like indies and play demos too, I have this set to 150 (twice my monitor's default).
Before I did that, my record was over 11k fps in a small pixel game.

On a whim I bought and completed this game the other day after seeing someone mention it in a thread here;
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2411100/Mind_Control_Bloody_Renaissance/
Going off achievement stats I think I might have been the 2nd or 3rd person to ever complete it. Felt super scrubbish but there's something special about playing a very amateur project that took some guy 7 years to make.

>This is not fiction. And this is real, the story of over a decade of abuse experienced by this autistic plural trans lesbian. Zoom from Sept 17 2014 to present day. Gain a deeper appreciation of Christian theology through the lens of Christian Infernalism, Christian Annihilationism, Christian Infernannihilationism and Christian Universalism. Experience the accounts of the events as they unfold. Navigate and click through menus to unlock the secret behind the mystery.
Anyone find any more games made by actual schizophrenics. The amount of reviews just being people throwing bible quotes at each other elevates the experience further, I'm afraid playing this game will soil my opinion on it

These threads are rare because people who actually try new things are pretty uncommon. Too scared to ever give time or money to something that might not turn out that great.
>>
>>719965409
I think a bigger reason that they are rare is because retards seethe at them for some reason. Just take a look at this thread. They're seething at the concept itself of playing an actually obscure game, not even any distinct game.
>>
>>719965695
The problem is all these games are janky and derivative of something better, so why wouldn't you just go play the superior, more popular game.
If you pick the worse game just because it's obscure, you're just a hipster and everybody hates hipsters.
>>
>>719937102
Yeah.
You should also check back when the next Steam Next Fest is around. We had a good series of threads going, a good number of interesting games were discovered. Big plus is that you don't have to pay for anything, just play a demo.
>>

>all these games
You know "all these games"? Well over 10k per year on Steam alone, and you can talk about all of them. Damn, I thought I was a real video game connoisseur.
Since we're already talking, master, teach me, what is the better, superior version of And Roger and Ko Ima Ni Ari that were mentioned in this thread already. Somehow I can't stop thinking about them since I finished them, so I'd like to see their true potential.

Speaking of obscure indie games: write reviews.
You may or may not know this already, but until a game reaches 10 reviews, its basically invisible on Steam, it doesn't appear in recommendations and so on.
So, especially when you play a game that has less than 10 reviews, try to post one. If you don't feel like writing an essay, just type "fun game" or something. Doesn't even need to be positive. Even a negative review is probably better than nothing, since it counts just the same.
Your review does matter: it gives +10% towards the goal of 10 reviews.

Games I played this year.

>path of achra
Easy, shallow, lack content. There are like three different play styles everything else is just superficial variation of. Worse the actual playing the game is worthless, so it's all about character building which is what I said.
>slay the spire
heard about the game for year. Finished it and I was like "that's it?"
Really disappointed, I don't get how people have hundred or thousand of hours in it.
>song of syx
The whole game is just, "you do this, but with 3% better yields!" I HATE how research work in this game.
>rift wizard
similar to path of achra, but better on all fronts. Still share most of the problems, even more when it comes to balance.
But the version I pirated is several months old and the only newer version I found was some shady shit I didn't want to download.
It's a fun enough game, but when I saw the price on steam I got to wonder what the fuck the dudes are thinking.
>binding of isaac
playeded the game when it came out and didn't like it. Playeded the game now and it's more or less the same but with more bloat. It's not a fun game. Also having to check the wiki to know what the fuck items do is gay as fuck.
>>
>>719970107

I'm not sure how much it matters to go from 6 to 7 reviews or 14 to 15. I feel like at those numbers it's all academic.
>>
>>719970185
Most people know binding of Isaac is garbage at a glance because the art style is so atrocious.
>>
>>719970441
14 to 15, not much, but still something. 6 to 7 could mean that the game reaches 10 on the second day since release, for example, instead of two weeks later, if it stops at 9 without your review.
And, of course, first days are the most important.
>>
>>719937102
I amble around looking for fun stuffs yeah

>>719971589

>>719970185
Based take on Slay the Spire. People act like it’s some endlessly deep roguelike but once you beat the heart and see how narrow the viable deck paths are, the illusion falls apart fast. It’s Diet Strategy for people who think “draw 5 cards every turn” is galaxy brain.
Also with you on Isaac. The second I saw "trinkets that do nothing until you get 10 of them and maybe they combine into something random" I noped again. Roguelike bloat is out of control, devs think adding 1000 passive items = replay value.

I've been screaming into the void hoping more people play Three Wishes, Robot Girl's Dream, and DRAPLINE. I'd also shill Demigoddess!, Dream Tactics, and Outrider Mako, but the former is basically a jankier version of Dominions made by a Japanese dev and the latter I've only played five minutes of. Ditto on the latter for Outrider Mako.
>>
>>719973527
Also forgot Cleanfall. I genuinely hope the dev does manage to turn it into turret monstrosity Noita with a meido lolibot.
>>

I've been following Demigoddess on twitter for a while, how does it compare? Is it at least less overwhelming for a beginner than Dominions?

>Balatro
Pretty weak as well. My expectation was that it would ramp up to some "summon exodia" bonkers shit like that. Instead is just the poker mechanics becoming less and less important as you play replaced with just getting the right jokers.

Also bonus, Noita.
It's the best one of the other I named, but still feel like an half-finished game.
Everything outside the 'main' dungeon is lacking in content (while being obtuse to hide this). The wand-making is a lot less exciting than what it looked like at the start, machinegun-wands are too OP. The game is designed to be broken, but when you do you are left with something easy and tedious.
Everything about the perks is infuriating. Horrid design.
It's still a cool game worth playing.

>Is it at least less overwhelming for a beginner than Dominions?
For sure. The combat's automated like Dominions. Honestly, I haven't played too much of it so I can't speak on how its mechanics play compare to Dominions, but since you're also dealing with far fewer units and commanders, the midgame likely doesn't devolve into plotting the movements of a gorillion units across the entire map. Plus, the game itself prides itself on having each game take only about an hour to beat or something, so that also tells you it's more beginner-friendly.

Arguably, it's more of a gateway into Dominions proper than Conquest of Elysium, but with anime girls.

Impeccable taste, im going to wait until drapline goes out of early access to play it though, had a lot of fun with robot girl's dream
