How would (You) go about designing the next Smash Bros game if you were in charge? Would you make it Ultimate Deluxe? Or would you try something new?

Create a back and forward special for every character. Also completely rework most of the cast and cut down the base roster to ~50 characters.

Here's who I'd include depending on how big I could feasibly make the roster. I'd be heavily reworking most of them. For example, I'd give Kirby copy ability attacks for all of normals and specials. Donkey Kong would get Barrel Toss as his Side-b, and his dash attack would be able to be extended by mashing A, and you get a long jump from it if you jump out of it, just like how it works in his platformers.

That still gives them way more diversity than infinite swordies. There's not a single FE character without a sword. They also play incredibly similarly while the Pokemon characters run the gamut from grappler (Incineroar) to fast combo fiend (Pikachu) to hit & run (Greninja) to etc. None of the Pokemon play even remotely similarly.

I kind of get it. All the Pokemon are fairly unique so their faces are juxtaposed onto to unique and varied Fire Emblem characters, whereas the Fire Emblem characters are all that games main Lord and “mascot” so their faces are juxtaposed onto the Pikachu clones of successive generations of Pokemon games.

Top is all Pokemon being represented by FE units and showing the diverse playstyles each Pokemon in Smash provides.
Bottom is the FE characters represented by Pokemon, specifically Pika-clones and Mimikyu, showing that all the Fire Emblem characters in Smash play nearly the same besides Robin.
The message is poking fun at Smash’s design philosophy when it comes to designing the Fire Emblem characters choosing to use mostly sword fighters when there are plenty of other units to choose from to base a fighter on.

The humanoid fighters just make the most sense for Smash considering Smash is a fighting game. You can't have something that floats/flies like Skarmory, Chandelure, or Barraskewda because that just breaks the gameplay of Smash. You don't want something too wide/long like Rapidash, Metagross, or Zacian because then you're just combo-food. They have to have something that could viably work as a recovery option, so that disqualifies another good chunk of Pokemon like Diglett, Tyrantrum, and Krookodile.

The weirdest you can get would be something like Trevenant, Empoleon, Gengar, and maybe Aegislash or Serperior if you're feeling adventurous.

thats kinda what i was thinking already, pokemon is inconsistent with sizes and smash already redesigns characters slightly so i dont think its impossible for pokemon to be too big. maybe im just spoiled with pokken and pokemon close combat going out of their way for variety with mons like darkrai and primeape

sure, i've got a few ideas
>overall lighthearted tone, no bullshit like multiversal stakes, latin orchestral chants, or pissed-off marios. visual style takes direct influence from smash 64's promotional material while music consists entirely of arrangements/medleys in genres like jazz & big-band, giving a slightly chaotic nature to battles
>max. 20 characters. each and every one must fill a distinct role in terms of appearance, character, and archetype - i.e., only one "fantasy hero", only one "dark sorcerer", etc. helps keep everyone more visually distinct while also creating a feeling of it being an ensemble cast where everyone fills their own role in the dynamic
>some "main characters" are cut and replaced with side characters/villains in light of this. for instance, link fills the "fantasy hero" role, so a fire emblem pick should fill another one; such as navarre as a rogue/assassin-type, anna as a travelling merchant, etc. allows for a mix of fan-favourite picks and unorthodox pulls. likewise there should generally be a balance between "cute", "cool", and "weird" in terms of general character vibes
>general approach to character design & moveset stuff is character-first, with the whole "copying shit from the source material" thing going no further than general vibes (like 64's fox or falcon). so, no character-specific meters or whatever. also, character designs are composites of their most iconic appearances rather than just replicating a single game, akin to how link was handled in sm4sh
