The first time i played MGS as a kid, I thought "why is this guy talking that way?" It never seemed like a genuine embodiment of a character to me, always just someone putting on a weird gravelly voice.

I would have never started voice acting if it wasn't for David Hayter. I will always be a fan.
I feel like snake's voice worked fine in MGS1 and maybe to some extent MGS2 because Snake was an hermit that barely talked to anyone in quite some time. He was grumpy vet that was infiltrating a high security facility so it sort of make sense that his voice would be a rough whisper. But it sort of loose its touch when the maps started becoming big open fields and the character switched from Solid Snake but yet still kept that autistic voice.

Love him or not, he's iconic. With a normal voice he would have been forgettable like the protagonist in Syphon Filter.
